Dear all future Big 4 applicants.

I have a simple request of all of you.
Do learn how to use Ms Excel (at least know basic formulas etc) and Ms Word before you start work. Please.
Don't drive your future seniors up the wall and make us don't want to confirm you.

I don't think I'm asking too much here.
*
Fully agree on this.

Know how to link cells, know how to add rows, add columns, know how to use =SUM() and know how to create percentages.
Basic enough?

Must know how to copy paste also. Don't blindly waste time type in when u can copy paste. Learn how to adjust excel rows (avoid having ##### apearing in the cells) and how to adjust page break so that the printings are readable+presentable for review. Print preview is a very important step. Don't auto sum wrongly as well. Don't double 'sum' if u have subtotal in the excel sheet.

I'd be happy to do things on my own, as long as no one complains about how I do it smile.gif

Unfortunately, I report to at least 5 different seniors, and they each have their own way of doing things... If I don't clarify with them on how they want the work to be done and do it my way, i get scolded and have to redo it, thus spending more time on a simple jobĀ  sweat.gif

This is very common in the working world, not just for the Big 4 and you just gotta play it smart. Be sure to remember and if needed, take notes/mental reminder on which style for which senior to make your own life easier. Consult other Associates that have been there longer about the Do's and Don't's for the seniors you're reporting to. It's not easy to be done at the first place but try to make it a point to notice the small things as it could make your life a lot easier. Even if you plan to go commercial next time, the same thing will happen allover again.

Hi, everyone got their "hardship allowances" yet? What the range like, from junior to senior? Just curious..

Hardship allowance? Which firm offers it?

Ha ha I burn almost all my OTs and going to group trip requires us to take annual leave also. Still better than nothing.......

Sigh. I feel you. Applied for 2 weeks of TOIL for Nov since beginning of August knowing that it will take very long to get approval..till now also no news no sight and the cycle repeats (burning all off).

RM120 or RM5-6/day is considered to be quite cheap. Most EY are paying RM10/day parking or RM139-RM150/mth for season parking (which the parking areas are almost always full).

I say small investment for bigger return?

yeah true! but since i able to reach brickfields area around 7 smthg, i actually able to find free parking . ^>^ but hv to walk abit up to plaza sentral ...also i was avoiding jam by leaving house at 630am and more cars are getting earlier...the traffic at least smoother and not stuck in the jam for 2 hrs...have to use east west link...lol, a bit out of topic

LRT is def efficient but have to squeeze like sardin, no?haven't tried that cos petrol 200/mth not too high and i can hv free parking some more...

hahaa. then what kind of return?? maybe higher level of personnel should pay higher...and they can have bigger return then...lol

Think in the long run and experience you will be getting. Once you have served your mandatory sentence at big 4, a better life awaits you (if you leave for commercial that is...but I might be wrong so yeah..)

QUOTE(fastreader @ Jul 14 2012, 02:47 PM)
where did u get this idea???...u must;ve been brainwashed by a big 4 career talk...this is their exact marketing strategy...

lemme tell u what is wrong with this idea

First, u are banking on a hope (false onot we dunno)...what is hope???...hope=nothing substantial..isit reli a promise tat a life of bed of roses awaits u after Big 4??? NO such thing. no one owes u a living whether u are fr Big 4 or Small potato firm...u still need bust ur a$$$ when u leave Big 4 for other commercial firm...

Secondly, ok..Big 4 experience..what experience do u exactly have?.. its just AUDITING (with exception of advisory maybe)...in banking, we need management material...in consultancy, we need strategic thinker..and how does auditing makes it relevant here?..it may be relevant to a certain extent, but imagine someone who's in that particular field since graduating, surely their advantage would b more...

and sad to say tat, only big firm can manage to pay u well if u have experience fr Big 4...so practically if u cant get to a big firm, u are not reli leaving for a better firm, may still be stuck in Big 4 for a very long time...and for big firm, surely it would b much cheaper to train a fresh graduate fr scratch than to take in a so-call big gun fr Big 4..as who knows the big 4 fellow got attitude problem as they may lack people skill required in the industry....

ponder the words for a while...i may stand corrected btw...I'm fr Big 4 btw, with 4 yrs financial auditing exp...so, i'm shooting myself in the leg u can call it tat way.. tongue.gif

thank you for your reply but from what i read here and close colleagues (those resigned from big 4 and jumped to commercial) they often get better pay which i believe might be many of my own isolated cases. my apologies if my isolated cases do not seem to hold any credit to my reply earlier...and of course if you wanna compare those working in big 4 and those with experience from that particular line, then you are of course stand very much corrected.

but my POV comes from those that have chosen this path and which are sticking by it. of course, if big 4 companies are not good and nothing beneficial..i wonder why people still wants to join? (and for your to be still staying in big 4 sweat.gif ) no one owes us a living and you would still be working hard after big 4 but then again you will always have a choice to not to and still be earning the same if higher pay. as for new grad, trust me i have my fair share of problematic, lazy and incompetent juniors under me. experienced or fresh grads, all have attitude problems.

and yes, i am from big 4 with audit and tax experience too. there will never be a perfect job with perfect pay but i believe it is not constructive to be complaining here with the negative vibes. i have my fair share of really bad experience and no, i am not banking on the hope but rather i prefer to think on the positive side since i have already chosen to be working in big 4 (or shit hole where most would like to address this place as tongue.gif ). we are both just standing at the extreme opposite end of the ugly truth rolleyes.gif
