HI may I know when we have to apply if we are interested in doing an internship? do they only take in penultimate year students or are year 1 students eligible to apply too?

Hi, if I plan to do my internship during the summer next year (May - September) when is a good time to apply? January? A friend said it was already too late when he applied in March.
