You might get Nikon D3100 if you feel comfortable with it. It's a pretty good DSLR. The lens might be quite costly so maybe you could share some lens with your friends too - mutual beneficial for u and your friend. Canon 1100D will be coming out around this year. I won't recommend you buy it at the moment. If you want full control on DSLR, it's not advisable to take Micro Four Thirds.

Lately in years, I have seen that DSLR has become a norm worldwide. It's depend whether you are going to carry it around alot. Although DSLR has become more compact lately, it still can be very tiring to carry around (for girls, guys might not have this problem). I heard my friend telling me that he rather get a point and shoot camera after owning a DSLR. He hates bring it around cus it's bulky and heavy.

As for Panasonix LX5, you could check the photo quality taken in here. I found it lacks the feel and soul (sorry to panasonic's fans). I prefer the Canon S95 in terms of the photo quality(check in here). DSLR has better in performance in noise handling at higher ISO though. If you take DSLR, you have a lot to learn to get a good photo. Point and shoot can get instance result but there's a limit on what it can do.

I would suggest to look around your friends. If most of them are using Nikon, I would recommend you to get Nikon as well so you could exchange lens for creative photo shooting. D3100 is suitable for you becus it has guide mode to give you direction how to take the photos you want. Just want to let you know that Nikon lens are not that cheap.

There is sony a33 for you too if you do not mind that. It should prove to outperform d3100 slightly.

PnS is Point and Shoot. Your regular small camera, normally fully Auto mode, You just click the button and it snaps. Relatively cheap, you can easily find one below RM1k.

DSLR is Digital Single Lens Reflex. The big huge chunky with big big lenses. Normally full manual, you get full control over your camera. Relatively much more expensive than PnS, normally costing at least RM1.5k to RM20k ++

Micro Four Thirds is something in between the PnS and DSLR smile.gif

All cameras nowadays are digital lar, hence the names digital camera. Still got use film meh? biggrin.gif

To put it simply:

1) Size: Normally bigger than PnS but smaller than DSLR
2) Image Quality: Better than PnS but below DSLR( due to sensor size being in between). Same goes to Low light performance
3) Price: Somewhere around RM1.5k to RM2.5k smile.gif
4) Functionality: They usually have full manual controls, but not as versatile as DSLRs

Yes, Micro Four Thirds cameras can change lenses but there's limited choices to begin with smile.gif Lenses are much cheaper compared to DSLRs..
