few days ago was down for 2 days..and now again!!!

Perhaps you should give them a call. The day after you made a report, tell them your line still cannot and they will send you a group of technician on the next day. It's pretty swift for me I would say leniently speaking.

I just had my BTU changed this morning, but somehow I had a slight problem in connection just now.

QUOTE(orenzai @ Dec 21 2010, 10:58 PM)
switch replacement? sorry for my ignorance but what is it actually? i tot the btu connect to the dir 615 router then i do vlan tagging to my custom router right? where does the switch replacement come in place.

thanks in advance notworthy.gif
*
You do bridge mode is when you use your own router together with the DIR 615, and that is one way of reducing the load and "increasing" the reliability of the DIR 615 in which the DIR 615 handles vlan tagging and your router manages incoming traffic(that's what I understand so far). Another way to do it is by purchasing Mikrotik switch, thereby eliminating the usage of DIR 615 that does everything which inlcudes vlan tagging, ip tv, internet(connects to your custom router) and little configuration is required and you are good to go.

The whole idea of using Mikrotik switch is just replacing DIR 615.

Guys, for the VIP packages, the STB is compulsory to be installed? I know there won't be any price reductions but what if I really don't want it, still have to be installed? hmm.gif
*
I'm keeping my STB and it's collecting dust now.

Anyone can tell me How to prevent Lightning Strike thru Fiber Optic ? How to protect the BTU unit?
*
In theory, fiber optic cables will not be affected by lightning strike simply because it doesn't carry electrical pulses. However, since you mentioned BTU, it would be wise if you plug off from the wall socket as soon as you heard storms coming.

i got a Belkin Surge Protector... I plan to use .. Is that adviseable to use that to protect it?
*
QUOTE(YouDontKnowMyName @ Jan 16 2011, 11:21 PM)
belkin surge protector didnt protect my router last time when there was a thunderstorm.
it fried my belkin n wireless router even though it was plugged into the belkin surge protector..

edit: plus, it also fried my desktop pc's motherboard at the same time it fried my router.. it too was plugged into the belkin surge protector.
*
This is the reason why I don't really use surge protectors. They can never guarantee to 100% protect our computers from mother nature neither do I encourage people to use it. Yes, sometimes it does its job but, not all the time and you will never know. So the best way to prevent it? Don't be lazy, plug off all your electrical things from the wall socket is the best protection.

Taken from klseet's post on V8 Unifi thread, I think it would be a good idea to add this to the main page and possibly on klseet/riz homepage guide(for convenience) for Mikrotik models.
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=38966282

QUOTE
1. Configure the DIR-615 as bridge mode, then you can use any WAN router, just setup PPPoE (like Streamyx). IPTV can still be watch through the DIR-615.
Please refer to Riz's guide at: http://unifi.athena.my/custom_routers.html

2. Get a MikroTik RB250GS to handle the vlan tagging for both internet & IPTV, then you can keep that DIR-615 as spare. You can use your own WAN router, just setup PPPoE (like Streamyx) and connect to RB250GS.
You may refer to Riz's guide at: http://unifi.athena.my/mikrotik_rb250gs.html or http://klseet.com/index.php?option=com_con...e&id=6&Itemid=4

3. If you are advance user and require more complex setup, then you can consider 2-in-1 vlan+full fledge router MikroTik RB750 or RB750G (Gigabit).
You may refer to: http://klseet.com/index.php?option=com_con...e&id=5&Itemid=5
Please note RB750/750G does not has WiFi, so you may need to setup a WiFi AP

4. TP-Link TL-WR841N ver7 - a complete 3-in-1 vlan+router+WiFi total replacement for DIR-615 !
Check out there: http://klseet.com/index.php?option=com_con...e&id=7&Itemid=6
Eventhough TP-Link has not official release the custom UniFi firmware, the latest beta firmware I've tested is working, few others also installed no problem!

wait, DIR-615, TM's giving that to us Unifi users too right? Getting Unifi tomorrow, they're gonna install it tomorrow afternoon. Or I'll need to get my OWN ROUTER?
*
By default TM will be giving you all the necessary equipments to enjoy the service. If you want stability and better performance then you will need to get your own router and follow riz's guide.

Damn you bro  tongue.gif , should have post it earlier those geeks from Landasan sold me RM30 higher than 82USD.

Anyone guys, it cheap smile.gif
*
Btw, since you own both models, which one would you recommend for a typical user? My guess is RB250?

I started with RB250GS, then RB750 & RB750G.
My comment:

For RB250GS
- almost no change to your current network setup
- just connect any of your current WAN router, change PPPoE user ID & password
- then enjoy !

For RB750/750G
- it's full fledged router gateway, advance users and complex network will appreciate this
- may need to change network setting to suite your current setup
- for junior (like me), need some R&D effort to setup proper firewall, port-forward, QoS, etc ....

For me, I still prefer RB750, I don't think i'm going to have over 100MB load on internet side on next few years, also it's lesser heat compare to RB750G.
For LAN speed concern, can spend another RM100 something to throw in a 8-port gigabit switch for LAN transfer/streaming! smile.gif
*
Thanks, but I have been trying to find out that with RB250 and RB750 performance wise is it almost identical?

Actually, what I think is that for a typical user who only looks for replacement and a little bit of control on network like QoS, port forwarding, etc is best to go with RB250GS. Am I right to think that?

QUOTE(KuzumiTaiga @ Feb 10 2011, 09:06 PM)
sorry, I didn't quite get that, does it mean I'll get a DIR-615?
*
Yes, you will get DIR 615. To be precise, most likely you will get DIR 615 G2 flashed with 7.09 firmware I think.

I am not sure what kind of power usage u are gonna be in. but I think the RB250GS more than suffecient to serve as a bridge if u have better router behind it.

Power users would probably more appreciate to use any commercial routers or RB750/RB750G or even RB450G. Its really depends on usage.
RB250GS = Basic replacement for DIR-615.
RB750 = Same price as RB750GS, but it is a full fledge router with tons of advance technical featurers using Router OS. Downside it has older CPU than RB750G and it is not gigabit lan.

RB750G = Same as RB750, just better CPU + gigabit. IMO power users would probably like this option.
RB450G = it is a next level of RB750G with 128MB RAM.

those RouterOS may sounds and look scary from setting up for average user, but with dummy guides from klseet, it shouldnt be hard. Right the only missing part is a dummy guide for port forward, QoS, filtering, firewall etc. It might get tricky for average user to try understand from Mikrotik wiki site.
*
That helped quite a bit. I'm just trying to avoid paying extra features I don't really need.

Thanks smile.gif
