If want good tomyam soup then go Golden Mile lo. BTW, BKT in SG sucks big time la. Also the Hokkien Mee, cannot make it 1.

SG local food (excl. western food or japs food) mostly 有型无味, ade outlook, xde taste.

Frankly speaking, have we debate on the benefit of getting PR before?? I used to be very eager to apply for PR when i 1st landed on SG, but after staying here for a while, i find that getting a PR doesn't really give us a lot of benefits compare to holding a workpass. this is what i found out so far, correct me if i am wrong.

Pros :
1. cheaper education (if u plan to study)
2. easier to job hop and also last option when come to company wanna retrench people
3. can buy resale HDB when u reach 35 years old or married.
4. CPF contribution (for west Malaysian, even after we give up PR, we can only get back when we reach 55 years old).
5. easier to pass immigration (no nid queue the long queue and can use the automated lane)

Cons :

1. cannot drive Malaysian registered car or Bikes.
2. u have to start paying CPF contribution which is a freaking 20% of ur salary.
3. SG gov might force u to convert into a Singaporean after 5 years or kick u out (not sure how true is this, but i dun wanna risk).

The main reason that is holding me back from Applying for PR is because i got 2 cars and 1 bike in Malaysia and i find it a waste if i wanna sell it off coz its very new. Not only that, if we get a PR, buying a car in Singapore is super duper expensive.
*
1. Get a Singapore registered car, I bought an Mazda 3, Dec 2005, monthly installment $612, it is not that expensive compare to working in Malaysia and buying a car in Malaysia.
2. If you do not pay CPF, you lose out on the employer contribution. It is our money anyway.

I dun think u nid guarantor. But you would need employer's confimration of your employment and salary. Dun think anybody, even your employer will guarantee.

Btw, in case u din't know, the COE (ballpark figure of $40-50K) u have to pay for your car (which is more than the price of the car it self) last for 10 yrs. So if u buy a 2nd hand car, do bear in mind its expiry. Cos by time expiry, ur COE is worthloess and u nid to buy a new COE at market price (assume another $40-50K) either for ur car or a new car.

Added on February 24, 2011, 8:56 pmHave anybody applied visas in SG for travel to US from the US Embassy in Singapore?
What if your flight is from Msia to US, not from SG to US? Can u still apply visa is SG?
*
If I not wrong, non-PR/Citizen, need guarantor.

COE have 10 yrs life only. so after 10 yrs, it has no value.
u may think u can sell the car, but think again. if ur the buyer will u buy it and cough up money tobuy the Coe in the market. Only if the COE drop a lot, ppl will consider, but it is unlikely. But if coe drop a lot i rather renew the coe with my existing car.

Added on February 25, 2011, 7:04 pm

i think he's main point is he got car allowance, petrol, etc etc, if i rmbr corectly.
if he dun buy car, buta buta wasted on the benefits, which the company taken into a/c when considering his overall pay.

After 10 years send for scrap lo, 55% of OMV and also the scrap metal price.

Added on February 25, 2011, 7:34 pmAlso the way I look at it, after 10 years i hope my income increase high enough that I wouldn't even care about the opportunity cost if I didn't buy the car

Many have the paradigm that hanging out with friend late night at the mamak is life. Those who hate it here, I guess they are not good in adapting themselves in different place/culture, how are we going to climb up the career ladder if we are not good in adapting changes.

No offence.

I know sometimes the guys in my Co would bring the client to Jurong Bird Park, then follow by a hill top dining. The Hill Top restaurant there serve good food but just a bit pricier.
Now, when can we make an appointment for my free dinner ? smile.gif

Added on March 5, 2011, 2:57 pm
Totally agree with you. it should be mamak St James, at least. smile.gif

QUOTE(shoograd @ Mar 22 2011, 04:09 PM)
Hi guys I will be starting my work in Singapore next Tuesday as an Assistant Project Engineer.

I kinda just found out that I will have the 'Assistant' tag in front (the job was advertised as Project Engineer) and they're paying me a pretty measly probation pay of $2200 although I have a Masters degree. But I am a fresh grad with no prior working experience and I thought that it still beats the offers I get from Malaysia, so yeah.

Would you guys take the job, under these circumstances?
*
I think Master degree is kinda irrelevant for a project engineer position. Just so you know, Assistant Project Engineer for my company reserved for undergraduate from Philippine, Myanmar, China and etc.

Added on March 22, 2011, 7:16 pm
QUOTE(shoograd @ Mar 22 2011, 05:53 PM)
Well, if compared to a fellow fresh grad, I would have better specialised knowledge  (CAD, FEA and CFD if you're familiar with mechanical engineering) and a better understanding and exposure of an engineer's tasks (e.g. product design, project management)

To be honest, it is better to pursue a postgraduate degree after working for a few years but my uni offered me a good deal on the course so what the heck.
*
For a project engineer position, only project management skill is useful la, the rest can delegates to other people. Besides that, project management skill cannot learn from university de, but through experience.

So what positions are reserved for fresh Malaysian graduates then? Right now I see this opportunity as a foot in the door to a career in Singapore and would definitely look for greener pastures once I have more hands on experience.
*
Malaysian graduates, minus the "Assistant". Welcome to Singapore.
