Looks like I am the only 1 working in SG but staying in JB.... haiz~~ what to do... all people here salary high high , only small potato like me got peanut salary and have to commute daily  cry.gif

No worry, I am commuting daily too. Normally I will take the TS8 bus to SG, and going to JB, either JB-SG Express bus or stop at Marsiling MRT and walk to Woodlands checkpoint. Or sometime lazy, I will take Cab.

RM9K a month is about RM117K a year (assume 13 months salary). Tax is about 15K on 100K taxable income and EPF is 13K or 11%. So, your take home is only 89K or RM7416 each month (average over 12 months).

In contrast, S$117K in Singapore will be taxed $8.5K. CPF is $12.6K. So take home is $96K or S$7991 per month.

So, not only is your take home higher, but also a much larger portion of salary deductions goes to your pension fund rather than to the govt.

And if you save 50% of your take home, you will end up with RM45K in Malaysia after 1 year. In Singapore, it's S$48K or RM110K @2.3.

But frankly, I find that it much easier to save a higher % of my take home in Sg than Malaysia. For instance, I'm going to buy an iPad or Galaxy Tab for Xmas. In Malaysia, that would eat X% of my salary. In Singapore, the % is much smaller... X%/2.3.
*
I agree with you. It's easier to save in Singapore than in Malaysia. I do my groceries shopping in SG bi-weekly and in fact, I save a bit more than when I purchase it in Malaysia. Generally, surprisingly, things are cheaper than in Malaysia (some of them). In KL, I have to factor in all the Tolls and Patrol I have to pay as well.

Yeah I think it will be crowded too. Cos some of them might work for 1/2 a day and going home back to JB in droves, SG-poreans going to JB for last minute shopping. I am also worry that day on how to get through the causeway in 2 or 3 hours! Hope that I am wrong.

Hopefully. Most likely I will have to do that when getting out to JB and subsequently back to KL.

its not eyes can see la, i am experiencing it everyday now. under certain reason, today the immigration is very smooth. even there is a lot of people, but i queue less than 20 mins can pass already (normally around 30-40mins). so i reach my office in 1 hour time. really nice. regarding raining, you can also see that everyone has their own rain coat la. i even put a pair of slippers in my bike for rain. It actually quite nice. when we are queuing under the rain, the queue will be shorter and also normally the road will be a bit flooded, so can play with the water a little bit while queuing tongue.gif.

Actually even for me who take bus, the traffic now is smoother. Used to take longer time to get across the crossway. However, the traffic jam in BKE and PIE is unbearable. I am pondering of taking the MRT to Marseling and walk to Woodlands only then take a bus. Anyone walked before? Just curious.

Do i need to provide any documentation when going Sg? Just passport and IC enough?
*
You do not need your IC to go into SG. What you need is your passport and to fill in the Singapore Custom Whitecard.

I subscribed Singtel mobile broadband, but then after 5 to 10 min, i cannot surf already even though my computer is showing that im still connecting to the internet. Anyone staying in ang mo kio area having the same problem? Or only me? sad.gif Or do I need to do some setting on my laptop? I called the technical support, they still didn't manage to solve the prob. sigh
*
What you need to do is to do a tracert from your computer to say, www.yahoo.com and check on the latency of the ping. If it's high, then you know it's the bandwidth congestion. Then capture these results and show it to the Singtel folks.

Other problem that I faced before was that even though there is a network connection, it drops to GPRS or weak 3G/HSRP. Buy a 3Meter USB cable and dangle at the window and try to see if that solve the problem or not as well.

It would be a stepping stone for you if you intend to work here. However, you gotta note that staying (incl. working days/weekends/public holidays) in SG for less than 183 days, you are taxable as a non-resident at 15% flat. Which means, $4.5k of the $30k that you will be getting goes to IRAS, i.e. you will be getting only $500 on your last month pay.

However, if the employment period on your letter of offer exceeds 183 days, then you have nothing to worry about. Of course, you will still be taxed but it's much much lesser. And also note that, even if the employment period on your letter of offer exceeds 183 days. But your job is terminated (by either party) before the period ends, you are still liable for the 15% tax.

The best thing is, ask your employer to take care of the tax, be it >=183 days or not. rclxms.gif

Argiope,

not sure about the others, but if you are talking about helpdesk (call center), then it will be around $1.8k-$2.5k depends on qualification. i got slightly more than 2k with 3 years exp, but i got no paper qualification, i study until form 6 only  biggrin.gif

Wow, Lester, how long have you been working in SG? Just a curious question, when you change your passport (renew), can you still come into SG with your renewed Passport along with the EPass like usual? I know we have gone through this disucssion but just wanna to make sure as I do come in/out to SG like yourself :-).

So sorry to sidetrack from the main answer :-)

I mentioned before, I renew my passport, I never inform MOM or company HR, I can still come in and out using new passport + existing EP

Thanks Giorgene, there is no issue even through the Auto Gate?

not sure about Singapore Driving license. But riding a bike in Singapore is rather safe compare to KL, if u rode a bike in KL before, you will feel that riding in Singapore is a lot more comfortable, their roads doesn't have those manhole in the middle and bike can ride at the middle on the road if you are going a fast enough. and on the $$ wise, its expensive if u stay in SG because u need to pay $0.65 daily just to park your bike at the HDB car park. Road tax is expensive as well. The other day when i am jaming in the causeway, there is a uncle riding a Singapore bike similar to mine, he asked me how much i bought mine, i bought mine at RM8k so i asked him back about his bike, he said he bought his bike $8k. and his roadtax is $200+ yearly while i am only paying RM30 road tax and RM100+ insurance. I doubt his insurance gonna be cheap though. And when we park our bike back in Malaysia, we don't have to pay car park. So my suggestion, if u are planning to buy a bike, why not stay in JB and get a Malaysian bike, even after calculating the $4 daily VEP, it is still cheaper to get a Malaysian bike compare to SG bike unless you are talking about long term (at least 3 years and above). Who know ur company gonna transfer you to another country or you getting tired of SG and wanna go back to where u are from, by then you are on the losing end. And since u work odd hours, then you don't have to worry about the traffic jam in the causeway as well. as long as you go and do the biometric identification for biker (free), then you definitely can cross the causeway in less than 10 mins (avoid 5am-9am JB-SG and 5pm-9pm SG-JB).
*
Just curious, since I have only been travelling from JB-SG for less than one month, do the traffic/bus crowd after 7am be the same during school days and school holiday? What about when getting back to JB in the evening? Very curious...

Just a curious case here. If a person is staying in JB and travel to SG daily, would this has any impact on the PR Application?

Hi,
My passport will expiry on this coming july and can i still travel back to Malaysia?
I'm holding permit.
Thanks!

I think you will have to renew your passport back in Malaysia before it expires. You can do it in JB if you want to.

just share a bit info after i checked with MOM, if renew passport we only need to change info on spass not renew again. so its quite easy.
*
Meaning we can come back into Singapore with our EPass (Without re-chopping our passport etc) and we just need to send the update document to MOM?

then ask your self, is those indonesian workers got the same pay as you do? is those filipino worker got the same pay that your were getting in Malaysia? Do you look down on foreign workers in Malaysia it self. then you got the answer. of course, for malaysia singapore case, most of them can accept you, just like how our fellow malays friend accept the indonesian cause they are some what look the same.
*
You are back in JB? How was the traffic on the way back to JB?

I think somehow Malaysian can blend in better then the rest maybe due to our similarities with the Singaporeans. I have no problem corresponding with the Singaporeans at friends level.
