I doubt that it is region free, especially if it is from US. Even locally available BD players (unlike DVD players) are not region free as far as I know. In any case, since we are in the same region as US (i.e. Region A), there is no worry as most likely you'll be getting your BD from US. No issue on PAL/NTSC but the main concern if you are geting from US is the AC voltage since ours is 240V while US it is 110 volts so you'll need a step-down transformer unless it is voltage selectable on the BD player itself.
Just get one locally lor, the Samsung BD-C5500 and Philips BD3100 can get for RM399 only in some shops. Can see users views on the Samsung in this thread here.

No it is not region free.
the model for our region has SP6 code on the back (hidden behind the sticker on rear panel)

it can play BD region A or region free only.
for DVD, it shows region 3.

but from history of Sony DVD players, SP6 models are actually DVD region free.

---------------
in your case however, the model code is UC. disadvantage is the power block is 110V only.
(SP6 are 110-240V power blocks).

for BD playback, its the same region A. DVD playback is however locked to region 1.

---------------
both SP6 and UC are NTSC only. only euro models have NTSC/PAL.

only if the mkv is encoded in simple mpeg4 format. the underlying audio video is .mp4, .m4v, .m4a
