Hi all sifus out there, i'd like some opinion on whether i should stick with tape to protect my palms or switch to gloves. My palms have been ripped apart lately doing pull-ups and deadlifts. Every time they heal. i rip them off again lol. The tape keeps slipping off as i sweat. Chalk helps, but not by much Should i get gloves? I've also been told that as my palms develop calluses, the skin will be more resistant to tearing next time, so i should avoid gloves. Halp.

for me i cant use gloves when deadlifting, you cant really grip the bar properly hence the bar slips.
for everything else i do use gloves though, more out of habit rather than anything else cos my gloves has some wrist support. dont think i would be buying gloves once my current ones wear out..

Happened to me while deadlifting and doing pull ups.
I went for gloves instead of straps. Want my grip to be involved in how much weight I pull, bar haven't slipped on me yet.

You should try getting a cheap glove for a start. If it didn't help, at least it didn't cost you much.
Personally, I started off with gloves but I feel better with my bare hands now. Don't know about the long-term effects though.

Generic ones will do, no need to go all branded with the nikes or whatever.

I bought a glove at Egonutrition in Subang Parade. Brand name Max Fitness for only RM11.90. Many people in CF Subang Parade often use those.

I got a expensive nike fit orange strength training/ or was it resistance training gloves, around RM50-100+. It's better than my cheap RM15 leather glove, since it tore easily and I still got tore hands even when wearing it.
To prevent the bar slipping, try use those wrist bands along with the gloves, it keeps the sweat from the hands.

Straps for lifting. Tape to tape my ass shut in case I poop doing heavy hack squats or leg presses.

Gloves, something I've been procrastinating to get for a long time lol. Pros and cons to this. Definitely have a better grip than before but calluses has formed on my palms, not too bad, just at the bottom of my middle fingers.
My grip tends to give way when I shrug heavy on the barbell for 15 reps.

I sweat a lot, including on my palms so gloves are practically a must for me. I chose minimal gloves, with minimal padding on the palm. Currently I'm using Nike. But I guess any cycling gloves work just as well, cost about the same...

Straps. Straps. Straps.
Trust me, when you put on straps, everyone looks at you. And when you're done doing one-arm rows with 100 pounders the minute you take them off everyone just stops and stares.
Or, people won't give a flying flunk.
Straps!

QUOTE(ijnek @ Nov 29 2010, 11:24 AM) ask ur woman if she likes a sandpaper-like hands over their body... gloves for me then? do i look like i like effeminate, poofter hands all over my body? Added on December 5, 2010, 12:43 pmbut seriously now.... i think its preference. if u can train without gloves then fine, do without them. if training without gloves interferes with ur workouts for whatever reason (palm pain, no grip, whatever) and u find u get the job done better with them, then by all means. personally i dont wear them anymore cos they stink up after while with all the sweat, the ones i like (Weider) are pretty expensive to replace, and the pain is something you just learn to ignore. for grip, i agree with having straps, and chalk in gyms that permit it.
