MELBOURNE architectural firm Fender Katsalidis has won a design tender in Malaysia for what will be the world's second-tallest tower.

The tower, which will be more than 580 metres high and have more than 100 storeys, will be surpassed only by the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, which at 828 metres is still by far the tallest building in the world.

The new structure will be built in Kuala Lumpur, surpassing also Malaysia's current highest building, the Petronas Towers, which are 452 metres tall.

The cost of the new tower has not been finalised, and detailed drawings are not yet available.

Fender Katsalidis director Karl Fender told The Age it would be a crystalline building with a shape inspired by Islamic patterning.

Mr Fender said that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak recently announced the winning tender in Parliament. 'It has become an election topic over there, but the tower will go ahead if the Prime Minister is re-elected,'' he said.

In the interim, Mr Fender will visit New York this week for negotiations with building consultants including Leslie Robertson, one of the chief structural engineers of the World Trade Centre, which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

''For a building like that that [in Kuala Lumpur], you can't mess around. You must have consultants with the most most appropriate experience,'' he said. Talks with experts on mechanical electrical plumbing would also be held.

Mr Fender said the developers were aiming for the highest level of sustainability.

''It's another example of an Australian firm being selected because they were in the region - not America or Europe - and therefore accessible, and with the appropriate experience - the Eureka Tower,'' he said.

OK I trust the news but why they quoted 580M + when the existing buidings under constructions are way above 600M. The Mecca building already topped liao..

So probably the new Menara wawasan should be ~ 650M or higher otherwise by the time, it will not be 2nd liao

how about 606??

pm najib wanna join the list of 606 leaders?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_state_leaders_in_606

buku ni memang amat menarik dibaca.. ia terangkan mengenai senibina bangunan dari zaman silam sampai zaman sekarang dalam bentuk 3D!

ntah macam mana diaorang buat ntah tapi memang menarik cara penyampaian idea dia.

"The Architecture Pack : A Unique, Three-Dimensional Tour of Architecture over the Centuries : What Architects Do, How They Do It by Ron Van Der Meer and Deyan Sudjic

The Architecture Pack encompasses nearly all the elements of an interactive book that could be squeezed in; pop-ups, red/blue glasses (used to give x-ray diagrams of constructions), cassette tape, model and glossary. Text and images are deliberately placed upside down on the page to force the reader to rotate the book to examine the backs of the pop-ups."

aduss.. nampak sangat kurang minat dengan kejuruteraan dan seni arkitek ni.. nak bagi senang faham je, macam mana diaorang bina bangunan tu, selain pakai blueprint je.

benda-benda macam ni dah jadi kebiasaan je.. sekarang tunjuk video dia
