MELBOURNE architectural firm Fender Katsalidis has won a design tender in Malaysia for what will be the world's second-tallest tower.

The tower, which will be more than 580 metres high and have more than 100 storeys, will be surpassed only by the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, which at 828 metres is still by far the tallest building in the world.

The new structure will be built in Kuala Lumpur, surpassing also Malaysia's current highest building, the Petronas Towers, which are 452 metres tall.

The cost of the new tower has not been finalised, and detailed drawings are not yet available.

Fender Katsalidis director Karl Fender told The Age it would be a crystalline building with a shape inspired by Islamic patterning.

Mr Fender said that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak recently announced the winning tender in Parliament. 'It has become an election topic over there, but the tower will go ahead if the Prime Minister is re-elected,'' he said.

In the interim, Mr Fender will visit New York this week for negotiations with building consultants including Leslie Robertson, one of the chief structural engineers of the World Trade Centre, which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

''For a building like that that [in Kuala Lumpur], you can't mess around. You must have consultants with the most most appropriate experience,'' he said. Talks with experts on mechanical electrical plumbing would also be held.

Mr Fender said the developers were aiming for the highest level of sustainability.

''It's another example of an Australian firm being selected because they were in the region - not America or Europe - and therefore accessible, and with the appropriate experience - the Eureka Tower,'' he said.

this project never about building a heritage... this is Najib building his legacy... so that when he back down as a PM, he will leave something that has his name on it... so while he has the power and money to authorize this, this project will proceed despite all the debates and arguements from ppl in malaysia...

5billion gone to waste for another building... what for making it that tall? it will be just another shopping complex ... if Najib really want to leave something for his name, it's understandable... but dont have to be so greedy and spend that such amount...

he said in the last budget, gov cant give bonus to gov servants as it will used up to 3.1billion country budget...

if he uses just 2billion for his silly building project, we all would get bonus already...

OK I trust the news but why they quoted 580M + when the existing buidings under constructions are way above 600M. The Mecca building already topped liao..

So probably the new Menara wawasan should be ~ 650M or higher otherwise by the time, it will not be 2nd liao

The people who supported the tower idea are right... Its gonna create plenty of jobs and the architectural part was given to foreigners... Way to go people!!! rclxms.gif thumbup.gif notworthy.gif

Hopefully, more Malaysians will blindly support government's project which will never benefit the people at all...

The structure should be the epitome on how Malaysia have progressed since merdeka. Nevermind the foreign construction workers who will be toiling to build it, but shouldn't it at least be realised using Malaysian workforce in the design/development process?

There's not much to be proud about if the designer behind it is a non-Malaysian, although he is being given strict rules to follow.

even so, in most events, the money is usually allocated already, so whether or not an LRT extension is built, a highway is built, a stadium is built, it will not guarantee more money will go into sabah and sarawak. plus with taib there, why bother..after he mati, then maybe..

The main reason for hiring western/foreign designers/architects is (based on my understanding);

Western designers/architects are known to be better (good probability of being better than our local architects/designers) in-terms of designing for a "cultural" context, that is because the western designers really know their thing; they really know how to first perform an in-dept/extensive/educated & well-informed study/analysis/research of the actual "cultural context/situation", before beginning the design process, for better informing & educating the final "design" outcome.

Since the dawn of architecture & civilization back in the olden historic times, It has already been in the "tradition & training" of western architecture practice to "design in a cultural context". (In general, the western architects are, due to their manner of thinking & training back home, are just very good in designing buildings that truly integrates, with a strong relationship, with the surrounding context; both physical & cultural.)

Trust me, the western designers/architects would do a better job in terms of cultural/contextual design with the skills they have in site/contextual-analysis, research, study methodology, etc.. (p.s., it doesn't mean that just because we are the locals & they are the "foreigners", therefore our local-Malaysian designers/architects would be better, more ideal or suitable for designing our very own national-cultural icon; believe it, we just need someone from a completely foreign country, but one who is truly qualified & educated in such a practice/aspect, to be able to perform a better job than a Malaysian borne architect who have worked all the life here; trust me, it is all about the knowledge, training, expertize, & skill-set that makes an architect/designer perform an excellent job in such a topic.)

One the other hand, it may not mean that our local/Malaysian architect/designers are inadequate/not good enough, but it could be because the foreign designers/architects (most notably western architects/designers) are just really good for the job. (Our PM would definitely have considered using our very own designers/architects for the job. As such, surely there is a very good reason for hiring western architects to design our national-iconic buildings instead..)

Our iconic Petronas-Twin-Towers has also been designed by a foreign architect; who had also performed a serious extensive case-study of the surrounding Malaysian "cultural-typology" & context before commencing his design proposal; which turned out to be a pretty ingenious & abstract design, a truly ingenious & well-informed design which I seriously don't think any of our Malaysian architects could have ever came up with..

Regards.

thanks for bringing some sense in this thread. you've taken off a huge burden i've been feeling.
its just that, when you read a thread, and you want to reply with a wall of text, but you dont want to write, but someone else had written everything you had in mind.
you feel like eating a sandwich.

buku ni memang amat menarik dibaca.. ia terangkan mengenai senibina bangunan dari zaman silam sampai zaman sekarang dalam bentuk 3D!

ntah macam mana diaorang buat ntah tapi memang menarik cara penyampaian idea dia.

"The Architecture Pack : A Unique, Three-Dimensional Tour of Architecture over the Centuries : What Architects Do, How They Do It by Ron Van Der Meer and Deyan Sudjic

The Architecture Pack encompasses nearly all the elements of an interactive book that could be squeezed in; pop-ups, red/blue glasses (used to give x-ray diagrams of constructions), cassette tape, model and glossary. Text and images are deliberately placed upside down on the page to force the reader to rotate the book to examine the backs of the pop-ups."

People build skyscrapper because they're able, we build skyscraper to waste rakyats money and show off to the kampung folks how great BN is. Those kampung folks soon need to move backwards into the jungle.

speaking about sustainability and bio-climatic buildings,

what about the most popular malaysian architect, Mr. Ken Yeang?

I think he have considerable experience to pull this tower project together.

He's designed buildings like Mesiniaga, National Library in Singapore..etc.

aduss.. nampak sangat kurang minat dengan kejuruteraan dan seni arkitek ni.. nak bagi senang faham je, macam mana diaorang bina bangunan tu, selain pakai blueprint je.

benda-benda macam ni dah jadi kebiasaan je.. sekarang tunjuk video dia
