thanks, but looking for AM bands specifically, they don't seem to be listed, but problem is I'm not even sure if they're still around
*
AM bands? You mean AM transmission on SW/MW? The second link has the frequencies, no idea if they're still transmitting though. I believe most of those stations listed in second link were transmitted in AM rather than FM.

forgive my beginner spirit.

Is SIRIM approved walkie talkies fall under amateur radios?
Some was written license free because it is SIRIM approved

Was trying to venture into walkie talkies but never realized there's a huge rule and regulations about it.
*
There are too many walkie-talkies in the market and they're meant for different market not only for amateur radio. Amateur radio is not an equipment but is a hobby, a licensed hobby.

May I know what you're going to use the walkie-talkie for? Some of the walkie-talkies fall under different class assignment and probably doesn't require you to get a license for it. Example is the FRS, PMR and CB radios.

I am hoping for a license free radio as it will be used mainly indoors in my small church. Just a way to communicate from downstairs stage to upstairs av control table.
In rare cases we might have some field trip or some jalan-jalan holiday tour. A pair will be enough with small distance. No need for those that could reach 12km.

I guess my budget would be about RM100-250. Don't know what are the standards to proper price but as usual, cheaper is better.

Hope you can help smile.gif
I also hope that I am posting in the correct thread? cool.gif

There are many China made brands on the market and I believe many of them cheapo ones with names like Motorola or Kenwood are fakes/clones. If you're in Klang Valley, go down to Jln Pasar, or Lowyat/Digital Mall PJ. Asked them for license free frequncies and they could program them for you as channels. The China made brands like Boefeng, TYT, and the likes can be had around RM150 and above a unit, complete with charger, good enough to be used within short distance. There are other walkie-talkies sold at AEON BIG, ALL-IT and some retail chains, they're probably either PMR or FRS radios like Motorola Talk-About, no programming needed, they're already using license-free frequencies, the range is very limited to around 3KM line of sight, or if within a building, probably could cover up to 3 stories.

Hi, would like to know more about HAM radio..
What do you guys usually do with it? Just talk to other people with it?
*
For me, I'm using it to explore new things related to the ham radio. Currently I'm into digital voice and voip linking via dv4mini dongle and wires-x using my Yaesu Fusion radio. I'm also starting up DMR too. Previously and still active, I have in my car, an APRS capable radio which I use it to share my location, send messages, receive weather data. On talking with others, I'm quite active in any field-days activities including Scout's JOTA field day, and in two weeks time, the KelantanDX field day.

There are more than just talking in this hobby.

still didnt get my callsign/license. already pass the RAE exam since 2013.

Check your result, there is an expiry date for it. If you don't apply before that date, your result becomes invalid. I think it should be valid for 5 years since you passed.

total cost leading up to having a Class B/Class A license?  hmm.gif

starting off with a BaoFeng UV-5R  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Cost to get Class B and A licenses:

1. Sit for Class B license = RM50
2. After passing, get a Class B AA and need to have at least 1 year before you could sit for Class A license = RM60 + RM24x2 (2 years validity) = RM108
3. Sit for Class A license (CW test) = RM50
4. Passing Class A, application for Class A license = RM60 + RM36 (the least 1 year) = RM96.

So total cost to get a Class B license = RM50 + RM60 + RM24 (the least) = RM134.

Total cost go get a Class A license = RM50 + RM108 + RM50 + RM96 (the least) = RM304.

aminpro go ahead an take the CW exam. There is news there would be 2 types of class A. With CW and without. The callsign also will be different to differentiate those who have taken CW and who took the other way. There is no downside to taking the morse test. its an additional skill to have
*
Just wondering where did you get this info from. There will be no changes in callsign. There will be no differentiation between hams on the same class. CW exams will still be conducted from time to time until the new process in place.

Check the skmm class assignment document here :

https://www.mcmc.gov.my/skmmgovmy/media/Gen...3-of-2015_4.pdf

Page 20 has the information about PRS (the freqs listed pretty much similar to some PMR/FRS/CB frequencies used overseas).

walkie talkie belongs to here?
*
As long as it ia used within the amateur radio, the yes. Else we can consider it as out of topic discussion though nothing wrong if you want to discuss it here.

Just remember, walkie talkie is an equipment, while amateur radio or ham radio is a hobby.

For a cheap start, buy a tv dongle based on rtl-sdr chipset. Can be bought for less than RM50 over in ebay. With a proper antenna, and software, you can enjoy monitoring all the frequencies up to few GHz depending on the dongle.
