Guitar Collection is the one carrying ESP and LTD. ESP and LTD make great guitars but at the price Guitar Collection is changing them for, I say there are lots of better choices.
*
My son wants a ESP AX-50, called all branches of guitar-collection but all sold out. They quoted price RM1498 but after discount about RM1350. However since they don't have stock, going down to Davis Guitar in SG this weekend. They selling the model for SG420 with free bag or about RM1K.

Are amps much cheaper in SG?

Probably will be...... but bringing them back would be a REAL b****...... imagine going through customs with that!!!!

i driving down so going thru custom shouldn't be that bad i think. How much are amp taxed if purchase from SG.

Any recommendation on amp to get for the ESP AX-50? Budget less then RM1K.

if you're gonna drive down there to get an amp, and are willing to pay tax.
tax if im not mistaken is 30%.
and since the amp you're looking for is under rm1k, better you get it here.
*
thanks for the info. 30% pretty high. But like you mentioned earlier, if throw away the box maybe can try luck if the amp is 30% cheaper in SG.

yah i lucky man to have 4 great children but no shiok lah buying the guitar, got to spend money on guitar and amps and no more budget for gadgets cry.gif Actually my son agreed that i pay part of the guitar and the other part deduct from his allowances (100% interest free program tongue.gif ) At first thought of getting Ibanez Electric Guitar set for about RM900, but he wanted the ESP AX-50 and after seeing pics of AX-50 on the net, can understand why he wants it.

But really on what kind of amp you get. If it's the really expensive one, above 2k range...... it's still going to be REALLY HEAVY to bring back. Don't forget...... you still have to carry it to Malaysia. If you're in a car.... just proper it in the trunk and when the customs officer asks, say it's part of the car's audio system! Damn shyok shyok one leh!!!!

If you're buying a small mini practise amp, then just buy it here. A good combo amp will set you back for about RM1500.... I hear everyone in this thread is RAVING about the Vox amp.....
*
blacktrix, problem is i don't know what amp to buy. Initially thinking of getting a cheap amp (below RM500) but after further consideration and the fact that my son 10Watt bass amp so so only, might as well invest in a more reasonable amp for the next few years. Nerd mentioned that VOX is value for money, what's you opinion on VOX. Noted you mentioned RM1500 for good amp, any reasonable amp for RM1K?

Will call CK music to ask about VOX amps today.

Actually, the AX-50 won't be my son's first guitar but his 5th. He has a "baby" electric guitar when he was real young, 2 "normal" guitar and a bass guitar. He has been learning classical guitar for a year and bass for 6th months and also taking drum classes.

Called up SG Citymusic and also CK Music. Well the price of AV30/50VT is 30% cheaper in SG. If consider tax 30% then price same.

wow....
ure one cool dad. everytime i go to a music store my parents will be complaining like mad. somemore they dont pay for my gear. its all my own savings or earnings
*
your parents complaining maybe you overspending in music store rolleyes.gif As i mentioned, my son is also paying for part of the guitar by me deducting his allowances. He is too young to work and seldom buys anything so its ok with me if he wants the guitar. To me playing/learning a musical instrument in a lifetime investment for self pleasure.

Yesterday went to Custom's website - loudspeakers and Amps are listed as dutiable items. Since there was a telephone number for Custom's KLIA office listed there, i called them up at 9.30pm, the officer on the phone was very polite, he confirmed that electrical loudspeakers and amps are subject to 15% duty tax, 10% sales tax and another 5% tax (can't remember for what) so total 30%. However he said since buying from SG not to sure if there's a different tax rate for ASEAN countries.

Anyway prices for VOX AD30/50VT as follows:

CK Music AD30VT - RM922.50 & AD50VT RM1237.50 after 10% discount.

Citymusic SG AD30VT - SG336 (RM780) & AD50VT SG452 (RM1050) both discounted price.

Since this amp not very costly, the price difference not much between SG and here, RM142.50 and RM187.5 for AD30 and AD50 respectively which comes out to be less then 20%. So if kena tax, buy here cheaper.

I off to SG soon, thanks for all your opinions and comments and have a good weekend.

Hi guys, just got back from SG. Went the Davis Guitar, they had LTD AX-50 (ESP brand on the back of the guitar) and not ESP AX-50 (i thought ESP = LTD). They had only one unit in Matt Black and my son wanted it. The salesman said ESP AX-50 would have better pickup compared to the LTD set). Got the guitar for SG420 including a bag & cable and no GST(?)

Anyway the sale man played it on a Marshall 15W Amp (dont' know model but price SG199) and the amp sounded great.

So now need advise to get an Amp. No one here have advise amp besides VOX30VT for RM1K eventho i have posted for opinions. Read many of the threads here and basically noted that Roland Cube 30 and VOX AD30VT good and many members here have it.

Summary from other threads

Roland Cube30 RM792
Marshall MG30DFX RM805 (Bentley) RM900 (Harmony)
VOX AD30VT RM900

Marshall MG50DFX RM1400 (Harmony before discount)
VOX AD50VT RM1200

My son mentioned Marshall is used by Metalica (but those must be very expensive series). How is the MG30/50DFX compared to VOX30/50DFX? Which would you recommend?

quetion for THEWHACKER: i noted you have a Marshall MG50DFX, would you recommend this amp and your thoughts on VOX AD50VT. How much and where you bought the Marshall amp?

question for led_zep_freak: would recommend VOX AD50VT (which you have) and your thoughts on Marshall MG50DFX.

nerd, blacktrix and lepzed, thanks for the fast replies because taking son go buy amp tomorrow morning as he's using his bass amp now. Considering my budget limited to about RM1K and want an amp 30W or above, guess will get the VOX based on all your posts and especially blacktrix's post considering he's a Marshall's fan.

Oh, my mistake on metallica, it was Gun&Roses that used Marshall he said. He bought a Metallica T-Shirst and a badge while in SG.

Took this picture while in SG, Machine gun guitar, didn't ask the price tho.

Speaking of which..... does your son own any FX pedals or multi-fx units? Another good investment is a solid FX investment.....
*
My son got no pedals of FX and i don't even know what's a FX blink.gif

What can a FX do and how much?

QUOTE(led_zep_freak @ May 29 2006, 10:36 AM)
Gen-X, what type of music/bands does your son listen to???  thumbup.gif
*
I think its Metal (coz i can't stand the music he listen in his room). He bought a Red Hot Chili Pepper CD and Metallica T-Shirt and Badge while in SG.

QUOTE(TheWhacker @ May 29 2006, 09:49 AM)
If you're the Metallica fan, then the MG50DFX is not the amp for you.

Its clean channel is superb  thumbup.gif ... super clear sounding.

To make things simple, the MG50DFX is an all rounder amp if you allow me to say. It can play most themes .... but not like 100% perfect amp for rock, or bluez or jazz.

I think you're better off getting the AD50VT coz its a vintage amp. Its something like the Mg50DFX but cheapaer.
*
noted above comments, thanks

QUOTE(j05h @ May 29 2006, 11:42 AM)
The MG's not as versatile, obviously.
With the clean channel, it doesn't have any distinctive voice at all, it's, well, soulless. Clear, yes, but there's no subtlety to it. Dirty, it's thin and weedly and painful to listen to. It's best used as a paperweight.

noted above comments, thanks

Went to CK Music today and they were closed doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif Anyway went to Bentley and they got no Marshall 30/50W Amp for below RM2K. Saw the Roland Cube-30 (RM900) which my son said his friend got and he had heard the thing before. Also saw GT8 - looks cool but have no idea what it does besides it being able to plug into the computer.

Here my son's AX-50 (pic taken with my Dopod 818 Pro)

if he's buying the Vox, i don't think a MultiFX pedal is necessary as it'll not utilize, but rather bypass, the modelling features and "tube" poweramp that Vox is famous for, IMO. it beats the purpose of buying it in the first place.. buy the Vox, and get a seperate wah.. that would be enough..
*
I just read few of the FX/pedals threads.

i guess i won't be buying any MultiFX for now as my son just starting on Electric guitar and going to be self taught. Since we have bought the guitar and kind of 99% buying the Vox AD30/50VT, my "mission" is done and from now on up to my son decide what he wants (by the way, he's only fourteen). Thanks again guys for all your help.
