Problem is when phone are on that empty batt as I showed in my post I don't think iTunes can detect the phone. So your solution won't work
Thanks for your response, but i quote "spoke - Steps Taken So Far : Pressed the home button and sleep button together, but screen just went black and then the charging logo came on again. Unplugged charger and re-plugged it in, same results." This means his 3gs can be switch on but stuck at the logo.
The batt problem occurred the 1st time his 3gs went off n on it again. Don't know why it happened but nevertheless, something has drained its batt flat. So,when he@my bro-in-law try to switch it on,the low-batt pic (like the attachments)appeared..what i did was:
1) i recharge it normally using the ac outlet. I waited until it charged about 15 min approx. so that at least the iphone can be switch on(i.e. the logo will appear but will never enter home screen,it just stays like that)
2) as my bro-in-law 3gs was jb-ed with tethered jb(redsnow),i HAVE TO re-tethered jb again using its software.FYI,i didn't even bother trying the 2nd option on my previous comment.i only use that as a last resort.
3) the re-jb process is a bit complicated(complicated for this specific case, mind u) n i can't discuss it here..i just improvised when doing it(try n error)..the most important thing when doing this is "TIMING IS EVERYTHING"..n i'm sure JB community understand what i mean by that sentence..n ultimately, the phone 3gs is working normally again n then i restore it back to the original ios 4.2.1
p.s this is not discussion on jailbreaking..this is a solution of the said problem..as restore it with itunes is a failed attempt coz it can't boot to home screen(n u need that to connect itunes)
