The one thing no one mentions on how to kill a hard drive, the sure way. Just connect the wrong voltage and it'd die straight away, for WD drives they are very very sensitive to voltage and they die from a surge versus other drive brands.
This is very true, and also a lot of USB hard drives connectors don't follow to USB regulation, so they exceed the 4.5W limit and end up malfunctioning. If anyone's interested, I found this video that explains why
