I use HDDSENTINEL to gauge the health of my HDD. useful tool for those with a ton of things in their HDD who wants to ensure that their HDD is fit as a cyber fiddle.

shorten the ext hdd lifespan. typo error above.

and any study done on this.

Shorten HDD life: partially true. I would say moving HDD around while it is still running will INCREASE THE RISK to destroy the HDD ON THE SPOT instead.

I used to run a long distance with my laptop still switched on inside my backpack doh.gif found out only after i had reach the destination.
After that i make sure my laptop is OFF everytime i carry my laptop around inside my backpack.

SSD is just like thumbdrives. You can move them around while using. The danger of moving HDD while running is because they have physical platters spinning with reading arms hovering above it at very close range (few microns). So if the platters were moved while they're spinning, the arms could scratch the platters. You can also cause the arms to move to another region while it is writing/reading, causing it to write/read wrong information and damage the HDD.

Reading arms or to make it noticable its like a pin or needle that will write and delete data from the disk.
