From the US pricetag, it should costs a tad more than the 20mm. As for the review, here's one http://www.lenstip.com/index.php?test=obiektywu&test_ob=273

I wish panny will release a 12mm f2.0 or bigger. Somehow I missed the 24mm on my LX3. I find the 20mm that I have now, lacking sad.gif
Also hoping for a new LVF2 rclxms.gif

Just found out the 70-300 M.zuiko cost about 800-900USD ......

WHAT A RIP OFF. When compared other models placed the 70-300 as a budget lens. Oly and Pana sure are exploiting their core customers >.<. I'm considering jumping the bandwagon to Canon or Nikon now that I have a pancake with my EP1 aka my P&S replacement.

On the other hand, the 40-150 with MMF-2 is quite a steal, getting it from USA for a measly sum of 179USD biggrin.gif

Gonna get shot for this but seriously... m43/mirrorless's strength is in size.. as in not having to lug around a dedicated camera bag... as a compact replacement, second/backup camera.

What's the point of getting long zooms for it?

To exploit the 2X crop, making it cheaper than buying the equivalent lens on other, less smaller sensor size DSLR. Of course its not practically on a range finder camera, I'm talking about telephoto lens options in general for the m4/3 which after a year only start to surface.

But shouldn't small=less material=less cost?

Judging by the line up and past products, almost all the prices had remain consistent with a minor drop of price. Furthermore some of them are mostly plastic body, but can cost as much as the medium grade lens on the 4/3 system. Best examples are the primes, with prices fetching at least 1k and beyond.

That's sure alot to pay for downsizing stuff.

I think your concept a bit wrong di.

Yes...One of the "benefit" of 2X crop = smaller lens

This does not equal to cheaper lens.

Material cost is only a teeny weeny part of the cost of a product ler... like a computer cpu... the silicon only cost kacang putih but billions are needed for R&D and building the fab.

How many cpu's they need to sell to get back the billions of dollars?

Same thing with these m4/3 lens. The best selling m43's are targeted towards casual users that don't go beyond the kit lenses so the total market volume is small.

In my mind, casual means something approachable. But the lenses that comes out besides the body are fetching quite high. As far as I can see, the only budget lens is the 14-42 kit lens. The rest are almost near the 1k mark and above. There is no budget prime like canon and nikon, or even olympus has like the 50mm for the m43.

Not something like a college kid who just graduated from P&S can afford. I can only see young working adults buying this stuff on the long term.

To be fair... most of those "affordable" 50mm have their history traced back 80's as kit lens for film SLR's with minor updates as time past by. Essentially this means that the Canon and Nikon would've shipped tooooneeesss of them enough to recoup any initial investments.

Besides those, most decent lens for dslrs also pass the 1K mark wat.

I actually have a mid size bag for my camera stuff, unless I just hang it on my neck, I don't think m43 is any where consider as small. 550D also small lor. sweat.gif
Since it's a 2x crop factor it would be better for extra reach right? Just get a 200mm or 300mm u get a 400mm or 600mm equivalent for 35mm. drool.gif
It's much lighter compared with a DSLR of the same reach right? wink.gif

BTW, is there anyone playing manual focus lenses with their m43 ?? rolleyes.gif

Yeah.. but then ... wouldn't it be only useful in the best lighting conditions, with tripod and with the bonzai dslr's ergonomics only. rclxub.gif

Which brings back to mirrorless's unique selling preposition. hmm.gif

I bought GF1 because I dun like DSLR's bulkness, but it's not small overall also. What I dun like about m43 is that it really lacks m43 lenses and they are pricey. Currently I'm looking at some MF prime lenses now, wonder how practical would it be. hmm.gif Anyone playing with C/M mount lenses or any of Canon FD or Nikon lenses? drool.gif

You can try to simulate the experience by going out jalan jalan in good light, bad light, no light ... snap some photos with manual focus only.

I've tried MF on the 20mm it's different I think. I had to turn the ring a few cycles before I can get in focus. Maybe it's the focus by wire thing on the pancake hmm.gif

I think the manual focus lenses are easier right, not more than 360 degrees since it's mechanical MF ring? Correct me if I'm wrong sweat.gif

The feel is different with fly by wire focus..

Of course older MF only lenses are more "accurate" in getting the focus you want since they have a longer travel from infinity to MFD and they are meant to be manually focused after all =p.
Comparing to the likes of AF lenses now, the focus travel can be really short like my tamron 17-50VC(not for m4/3 btw).

But the fly by wire focusing does change focus faster the faster you turn the ring though to a certain limit as to how fast it can go.

What I meant is the feel of focussing with LCD and the other hand working on focussing the lens while trying to keep hand steady with magnified view... without being on the tripod.

Just bought my E-PL1 last week. This is my first M3/4 as I only had compact cameras previously. This may sound like a nob question, I don't know (and can't find out from the user manual) how to create new folder for my camera. Last time when I used my compact camera, I could create folders for photos taken at diff interval. I find it difficult to keep to track all photos under one folder in my E-PL1.

Hope all the sifu can help! Thanks!

So far i know it creates diff folder at different days and if not taken too long, another folder will be created. But i don't think i mess with anything in my camera.

You say focus travel is longer, meaning it can focus faster right with less turn? Ya I feel that's better. smile.gif

Ya man I know how it feels with the LCD and with/without magnified view, of coz if got EVF better la, but I'm not getting the EVF for GF1. laugh.gif
I'm ok with LCD just I feel the focus-by-wire MF takes too long to focus, thus NOT practical. wink.gif

It creates diff folders on diff days happens when you use the ib software to import photos. Right? But when you take up your SD card and slot it into your laptop, there is still only 1 folder keeping all your photos.

talking about folders - if i am using a LX3 and GF1 and importing new photos from them with PhotoFun Studio, will they have the same folder name?

actually i really hate the way they name the folders for example - 24112010 is the usual folder name for date 24/11/2010 and Win 7 will place it next to folders name 23112009 or around those dates meaning in Win 7 directory - the year will mix around instead of 2009 in one group and 2010 in another grouping. any suggestions?

I'm not talking about different folders when imported. I'm talking about the in camera folder itself.

But then again, maybe I'm confuse with my LX3 since I interchange the memory card often.

CPL works on most DIGITAL camera if you want to use the autofocus feature. Using PL will confuse the autofocus mechanism in digital cameras, so you would have to manual focus it.

Don't ask me the science of it, you can wiki it yourself.

GF2 launching around Jan/Feb 2011 I think.

Want to ask why is everybody selling their 14-140mm? Too heavy? Not nice to use?

I have the 20mm now and looking to buy a used 14-45mm. Just wondering if I should get a used 14-140mm instead. Any advise?

i guess I'm one of them....and my take on it is that the Panny 20mm pancake is superb and can in certain ways take shots as how the 14-45mm can, with some neglectable limitations.
A more versatile lense would be the 40-150mm(190grams) or the one you opt for. I need the versatility and mobility of my camera/lenses. I trek while taking shots.

I use the pancake almost exclusively. Maybe because I don't have a good zoom lens. The pancake is far superior than my 14-42mm Oly.

For a start, I'm not married yet. I didn't want to bring the camera for my own reason.

Anyways, I can't wait for the next PEN. I hope it would be a considerable upgrade to my E-PL1. Maybe even use the processors in E-5!

nice pic u guys posted there..

anyway, i'm still new with the E-PL1. i find that the 14-45mm kit lens is amazingly SLOW to focus and i've missed quite a few moments because of it. one of the main reason i bought the E-PL1 is to take photos of my "active" daughter and the slow auto-focus is really frustrating. i blame myself for missing the e-pl1 reviews which highlighted this problem prior to buying the camera.will it be better if i use the panny 20mm lens?i'm seriously frustrated with the performance and even considered of letting go the e-pl1 and get a D3100 instead. any advice sifus??

the only solution is to anticipate the movement of your daughter and prefocus on that area...otherwise the other way is to get a SLR..

I do think the 20mm is faster than the 14-42mm oly kitlens. And I found that by switching off the AF lock beep, I feel the AF is faster.

Yes the 20mm is fast but sometimes the focus is not spot on. I find using my manual focus 35mm f1.4 get less errors and sometimes faster focus especially in low light conditions.
And yes i use single spot focus all the time. The FOV for the 20mm is a bit wide making the focusing spot a bit large for spot on focus of smaller objects further away. There r ways round this like activating manual focus after AF. Then again to view this fine tuned on the LCD is tricky so a EVF is a must.

hi all e-pl1 users,

any of you uses the Nissin Di466 flash? Need your help.
It seems that the flash unit doesn't work with my e-pl1. All my photos came out as though no flash is fired. This result all my photos in pitch black.

Tried in all shooting modes, changed new batteries.

But the flash unit mounted does fires flash when I shoot.

Really appreciate your advise here! Many thanks!

Sorry for the bad pics, I took this photos in very low light using my 20mm F1.7 - couldnt wait till daylight to take a few shots and show off my excitement sweat.gif

I see the aperture scale 16/8/4:4/8/16 looks narrow. I would luv to see the hyperfocal scale set at infinity on the F16 mark (right side). rolleyes.gif Could you post a pic on this

The aperture and focusing dial is just so smooth and solid. I dont know how to explain it, just makes my Lumix G lens feel like toys now.
Sorry for the bad pics, I took this photos in very low light using my 20mm F1.7 - couldnt wait till daylight to take a few shots and show off my excitement  sweat.gif

Owh...didn't know there are auctions organised by Panasonic.

Why Olympus never organise one? Haha. I went through the E-5's brochure and the technologies they use are amazing. But the price is quite steep. If they can give a good price for E-5's bundle with 12-60mm of even the 14-35mm, I'd definitely take one.

My brother just got his D7000. Somehow I see my E-PL1 gives better pictures. And the picture is what counts.

Really can't wait for 2011 surprise by Olympus. Wide bright lens. Pro m43 body.

@ idoblu - I envy your lens. How is you got it for?

How did you get so close with a 20mm without the bird flying away? Can GF1 zoom in a bit or really fixed?

No zoom with 20mm. It's a prime.

It's either 1) cropped or 2) lucky the bird never flew away. I think its the latter.

Nice, seriously thinking about getting GF1. I heard 20mm takes great picture but cannot zoom. If use the other lens, 14-45, it's not as nice as 20mm esp low-light. Having a tough time deciding rclxub.gif

@nutrinos Yeah, now that you mentioned it, it looks like anak burung, and something wrong with it's foot also maybe hmm.gif

Please do not mislead other that m4/3 image quality is better than conventional SLR, it will never be. Even shooting at base iso also can see the difference( The highlights are easily overblown, shadow noise etc)... I have ep2 and even by then my D90 is already better than the EP2 in terms of image quality, u are talking about D7000 here(Imho this camera easily beats the D90 hands down in terms of image quality from what i have tested)

I'm attracted to the very slim body of Panasonic GF1 but i don't want to carry multiple lenses (like 20mm and 14-45mm). I heard there's adapter for both micro third and DLSR lens here..

"Four Thirds lenses can be used via an adapter."

"Third-party adapters allow usage of lenses for dSLRs".

http://asiacnet.com/reviews/digitalcameras...62054778,00.htm

My question is what lens should i get if i want something like 18-105mm (or can zoom at least 4x) that CAN ALSO match GF1 kit lens 20mm? Oh ya and the price of the adapter and lens itself. notworthy.gif any recommendation

Cute cat with Lumix cap =D

@ pikipiki

You can find that info from Garage Sale. But as a rough figure, E-PL1+20mm is more expensive than GF1+20mm IINM.

Also anyone thinking of getting E-PL2? It looks nice. The 1/4000 shutter speed should be welcomed by f0.95/F1.7 users.

Yeah.. E-PL2 looks quite interesting but I think the new control wheel (while better than not having anything at all with the E-PL1) is too small.

And to get it to fit my usage pattern... it gets pretty expensive to buy the E-PL2 + panny pancake.

I tried the 14-140mm and 7-14mm yesterday. It wasn't any kind of IQ test though.

I'm amazed with the silence and AF speed on my PL1...

Welcome to the club!

@ idoblu

I didn't get the chance to test Oly 9-18mm. But I think if I had to choose, I'd go for the Oly.

The 7-14mm build quality although very solid, the distortion is too much for me. Just my 2 cents.

Looks like the market price is out di and it's STILL more expensive than the NEX5.

Maybe current owners don't find the E-PL2 a feasible upgrade.

I reckon it did fix (sorta) some of the main annoyance of the E-PL1

- Scroll wheel
- Better resolution LCD
- Apparently not so plasticky
- Looks MUUUUUCH better
- Faster focussing??

Yeah. Olympus did admit that the earlier PENs AF speed is due to the lens.

As for the display, I don't know why their XZ-1 got the better display than the E-PL2.

I hope the future pro PEN will get enough upgrades to justify me to upgrade. Haha.

EDIT: From 43rumors, G3 is coming soon. And if you read the comments, the admin said "I can say is that the G3 is a major step forward"

Now this excites me though I'm no Panasonic bodu user. Not yet.

Not yet.

as E-P1 user and early adopter, I disappointed they didn't give me firmware with E-P2 extra ....

1)shoot raw and process with any HDR software or

2) go to the menu> 2nd item>bracketing>AE BKT>any item except off (Usually i m using 3F 1.0EV which mean 3 frames with exposure -1,0,+1)

then there will be a BKT icon appear in your screen.

and whenever you hit the shutter the picture always going with auto exposure -1 then 0 then +1.

then using any HDR software to align 3 pictures together

I think a lot of place to get. But I got it from ebay shipped from Hong Kong.

Why you didn't ask the shop that you bought?

Kenot say like that lar. Last time got no competition. Now got NEX to come spoil the market.

E-PL2 also ngam ngam selling in Taiwan but the price feels not very ngam as both NEX5 and GF1/2 is cheaper.

Summore have to buy the 20 f1.7 separately to make it a worthwhile package.

All that added together = mucho $$$ doh.gif

Nevertheless.. still find the E-PL2 one of the more interesting recent cameras.

I reckon no... since it's the same sensor.. same everything.. smaller battery... lesser control..lousier kit lens. It does get smaller and a touchy screen in return

Gotta read between the lines here..

Unless u prefer touch screen, HD video recording and shooting 3D, oh ya and stereo sound for your videos. I'll say stay with GF1 if you are using it still. icon_idea.gif

hi just to share..today i call up panasonic malaysia i ask them if my panasonic lens is spoil where do i send for repair. To my horror they say lens do not have any warranty!! yeah that right panasonic say lens no warranty..then i get real piss off and ask her to check properly. Then she come back and say sorry sir got warranty you can send back the unit to panasonic to check and if got issue we will send to Bintang Maju. Once again i am shock!! i ask wtf dont panasonic have their lens repair division? She answer no panasonic malaysia do no repair any slr or lens. so they will all send to bintang maju. I ask again if Bintant Maju is certified as a repair center for panasonic or not..she did not answer and keep quiet...So guys just to inform you if you buy any panasonic slr or lens..you either need to send it back to japan for repair yourself or let panasonic send your lens to bintang maju for "repair"

Unlike olympus who have their real service center for camera and lens in mt kiara who handle local repair very well...

So think twice before you get any panasonic lens or slr..

Yeah probably true. I got this shocking news too when I purchased the 20mm F1.7. But the Panny never gave me any trouble to revisit this issue, so its ok. Touch wood though haha!

This one straightforward question... the no-warranty-panny 20mm f1.7 already cult status for m43. Slightly over 1-stop faster than the Olympus = if you need to use ISO1600 on the Olympus... you can get away with ISO800 with the panny.

And honorable mention to the non-M43 but incredibly effective product placement/subtle cyanide level poisoning.

So far not justifiable yet mar tongue.gif

I like the PEN's but with the GF's speed. E-PL1 felt very slow.. the shot to shot time... probably the low reso screen, the tacky lens and lack of dials adds to that rather rudimentary feel.

So far not justifiable yet mar tongue.gif

I like the PEN's but with the GF's speed. E-PL1 felt very slow.. the shot to shot time... probably the low reso screen, the tacky lens and lack of dials adds to that rather rudimentary feel.

Maybe you should try E-PL2 and see if any improvements tongue.gif

shoot model can use any camera. have u seen a professional usa photographer shoot model with iphone?! 3gs some more.

btw, is there any disadvantage shooting with 3:2 aspect ratio with 4/3 camera? (maybe in term of quality wise)
own normal dslr, dont like the 4:3 ratio & prefer the 3:2.

U see the studio n lighting set up for the iPhone shots or not? That itself can buy how many pro SLRs? If u have that kinda lighting n cannot get a good shot then better stop playing with cameras. tongue.gif

Well, I love it as the multi-focus point is very good with just a touch without going through the D-pad selecting the focus point.

The colour is very accurate under most of the lightings and so far i never found any incorrect colour of incorrect WB with Auto WB

The body is very solid compare to Olympus E-PL1, E-PL2 or P1 and P2

1 thing I found out is the battery compartment runs hot after some shoot out sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

It's awesome to use, multi focus point with touch, definitely faster focusing than traditional manual select focus point

If e-pl1 isn't severely limiting your photography, I'd say stick with e-pl1 for now.

Save your funds for the future PEN.

The high iso noise vs e-p1 is remarkable. Shows you how far you can push the same sensor.

Oly's JPEG engine is better. And the E-PL2 edges the GF2 by a slight margin at higher ISOs

Yeah lo... my E-P2 cant use the penpal thingy... ^^;

Yeah lo... my E-P2 cant use the penpal thingy... ^^;

UV filter normally to protect your lens from scratches...so if the lens is cheap, no need. If expensive, have to buy expensive
filter like Hoya Pro-1D

If the zuiko already 1K and since panasonic has no lens warranty in Malaysia... why not just buy from the 20mm f1.7 from overseas instead. It's only ~RM1K

FYI i just call panasonic directly..and they insist no warranty.. but for my pana leica lens they say it is a special case so under warranty.. but even though they claim my pana leica is under warranty they don 't do any reparing nor they have the technology and resource to do it locally. So have to go back to Panasonic Japan. and as you can guess charges may apply. At first they even say my pana leica lens is not cover under warranty till i say i wanna sue them in consumer tribunal court.. then they change their wording and style..

I thought lens come with Camera should have warranty?
It covered under the Serial number which include the lens.

I do not understand why Pana do not have warranty for lens? they are not confident with their lens? even a shaver also got warranty!!

Possible, if they are to send the lens to Japan to repair, just like those PC motherboards are sent back to Taiwan to repair. But may take weeks to months for repair. rolleyes.gif

Even if they were to send to Bintang Maju to repair, certified or not they still will get it fixed right? LOL

Why not you send an email to Panasonic Japan to ask about this, I remember somebody did this before and got their warranty honored. icon_idea.gif

as long as Panasonic got warranty, I dun care how they do it. They'll fix the lens. So not an issue. Its a bit weird that you

Just saw my nick was quoted here.

Yes, the lens has 1-year warranty. There's a sheet of warranty paper in the lens box.

I'm not sure about kit lens though. Let me check with the Lumix sales person in Panasonic.

yeah gogo is rite..

when IS is turn on there will be moving internal parts in your camera that moves,,,and you would not want it to move when u are on a tripod..

if you got mirror lockup function turn it on to further reduce any vibration from your camera...(if u use oly slr)

long shutter speed at night,,just go with the lowest iso...and yeah turn on noise reduction too...noise reduction is different from noise filter (applicable for olympus camera only)

wah.... a lot of knowledge here. Thanks sifu.
No wonder no matter how i took the picture still feel not sharp enough.
My impression is using higher ISO for night scene to increase light sensitivity (of course not too high until unacceptable noise)

Ya I understand the ISO part, lower to reduce unnecessary noise ... but I didn't know about the IS will move if using on tripod haha. tongue.gif

Guess I didn't notice about that due to I always using GF1 + 20mm, both no IS. sweat.gif

This is the bengang part.. how come (not aware about others) Canon for instance.... don't make MLU available as a shortcut. Have to dig so deep into it.

As the other folks explained... the SOP on tripod... base ISO, aperture sekucup rasa (lens dependant... @f8 or whichever sharpest to cover fore and background.. though M43 dof is quite big so that's less of a problem), MLU if available, Turn off stabilization, use remote cord or use timer instead of pressing shutter button and personal preference is usually I dial in a bit of -EV for more contrastly look.

Oh.. and for the Victoria Peak Tram pic.. since you're metering outside.. the tram and white walled house.. can also use lower ISO. For GF1.. even though I don't have one (my collegues constantly poison me with his).. Try to keep ISO low for cleaner images if shooting jpeg.

Panasonic advert better than Sony because we have connection with Hebe... but who

Bleh... the Keiko advert has a better soundtrack therefore the NEX must be a superior camera nod.gif

I would recommend get the Twin lens package. Price different is not much. Imagine if you get the Pancake then only realize want to get the Kit. Is not cheap to get it separately. Unless you want the go for the zoom lens, then get the pancake.

This is my very own point of view.

Of course 20mm is one of the best as having f1.7 and can play with the bokeh. Too bad GF2 is bundle with 14mm f2.5. But no choice. Unless you have enough budget then you can consider of taking Kit Lens then get the 20mm f1.7 Pancake lens.

nope. Its a cheap lens. Normally UV filter is for protection for expensive lens. If you buy cheap UV filter, then
your picture will degrade. Normally we recommend getting Hoya Pro 1D filter. The price is RM100 like that.

f/1.7 is opening of aperture. THe smaller number means opening bigger. Opening bigger more light and your
picture brighter and no need to increase ISO. Also the smaller the number, you can get bokeh.

yeah.. i think pancake lens is like a prime lens, where the focal length is fixed. Normally if twin kit for gf2 is how much? Hoping to get 20mm+14-42mm twin kit. How about epl-2? How does it fares with gf2? I saw good reviews, summore cheaper abit ><

After looking thru the forum, much ppl selling gf2 with 14mm and 14-42mm kit lens only.. >< if paired with 20mm is kinda exp tho... dunno worth it or not.. how much normally ppl sell their kit-lens? with 20mm lens+body the price is higher than 14mm+14-42mm lens+body. I scare 14mm is not good enuf for me as i wanna shoot indoor/low-light photo..

should i get only the kit lens and the body? then when i got the money i will get the 20mm pancake lens. Or should i just get the 14mm pancake+kit lens? becos the 14mm is kinda good when i wanna do P&S, but need to fork out extra 400 for twin lens.

I suggest you save another 400 for twin lens. Twin lens is good as 14mm is light and small, but 1442 is good for travel. Of course you can buy 14mm or 20mm later, but it will cost you more.

I'm using 17mm f/2.8. And after I get this pancake, I seldom use the kit lens. So yes, if I were you, I'll get the pancake also because that's
the reason we getting a m43.

When I go travel in Koh Samui, I only bring 17mm f/2.8 and no problem to get good picture.

Of course, if I were to choose again, I might get Olympus XZ1 with f/1.8 lens...hahaha....

Hi there Sifus, I'm toying with the idea of migrating from my EOS dlsr to the Olympus e-pl2 mainly due to the compact size and weight. My EOS is pretty heavy since i also si-katek at 5ft+ a bit.
I mainly use the 18-200mm lens and an ultra wide angle and i prefer shooting landscapes.
What would be a recomended combination if i were to make the switch to the e-pl2?

Thanks!

wah... I suggest you no need migrate. Just buy another set of m43. Then you can use EOS and E-PL2 depending on situation.

http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/lense.html

From the link, the only Wide is 7-14 and 9-18mm. 9-18mm is great because its small.

So I believe with 9-18mm and e-pl2 a great landscape combo. 9-18mm after multiply crop factor 2 is 18-36mm .

errrr the thought was to sell off the EOS to finance the m43la. My purse can't take the stress of both systems. blush.gif
if 9-18 for Wide then telephoto zoom 40-150??

Thank you!

zoom you choose lor... Olympus 14-150mm great walk about lens... can zoom until 300mm (35mm equivalent)!!!
Since E-PL2 is stabilized, all Olympus zoom lens is smaller than Panasonic that come with OIS...but some said OIS is
more effective in stabilizing the lens...

anyway, I'll take Olympus zoom lens because since using Olympus body mah... can save money and weight... since
Olympus zoom lens is cheaper and smaller than pana...

how often u gonna shoot at high ISO?

if the high ISO noise will disturb you, u can consider the lens with big aperture.

oh.. so basically a low light lens like 20mm panny pancake should be good enuf for nice low light photography right?? Dunno how often i gonna use it for low light condition, but i am kinda annoyed with high noise when low light, especially most of the compact cam.. So actually if can be better than normal cam, not much noise then ok edi..

Even with a bright lens such F1.4, I still can see a lot of noise in the pictures in low light. Some are acceptable but others have to PP it out using Lightroom or Photoshop icon_idea.gif
M43 system definitely has lots of noises compared to DSLRs ... depending how much you can accept it lor. wink.gif
If you are always shooting in low light, maybe m43 is not suitable for you. Just my 2 cents. rolleyes.gif

Base on my experience, the m4/3 is about 1 stop lower performance than SLR ( D90 iso 1600 is almost the same as GF1 iso800 )...but iso1600 is quite usable provided that u expose correctly, can do some noise reduction if u like.. now that i am already using full frame SLR i find it hard to accept the noise performance of GF1 doh.gif

interesting piece of news today rclxms.gif

German lens maker Schneider-Kreuznach has announced it is joining the Micro Four Thirds system standard established by Olympus and Panasonic. The company has not announced what it plans to contribute to the system - whether it will adapt its existing cine primes or develop entirely new designs for the system. The move follows Japanese maker Cosina joining in August 2010 which has resulted in the launch of the Voigtländer Nokton 25mm F0.95.

SCHNEIDER KREUZNACH now a member of the “Micro Four Thirds System Standard Group”

Bad Kreuznach, 04.02.2011, Schneider-Kreuznach has joined the “Micro Four Thirds System Standard Group” – a consortium of companies with the objective of improving the possibilities and quality of compact digital cameras. Developed by Olympus and Panasonic, “Micro Four Thirds” is a standard for lens mounts that is tailored to digital system cameras. “This standard has great potential. It simplifies and improves the options for compact digital cameras and offers an excellent opportunity for the industry as a whole, as well as for us as a lens manufacturer. We are working intensively on a corresponding series of lenses,” says Dr. Josef Staub, CEO of the Schneider Group.

The standard defines the sensor size, the lens mount together with the communication protocol, the aspect ratio and the flange back distance, as well as the optical requirements for production and construction. The industry standard has been developed deliberately without taking into account conventional lenses, cameras or sensor sizes. In this way, compatibility problems with older components are avoided as is the need to compromise when designing new components.

The forum standard policy means that any member company can make and distribute accessories for the system that meet the standard. It is therefore possible to combine components from different manufacturers.

Looks like the m43 standard is going to be around longer than expected.

Let's just hope that the lenses to be released by these 3rd parties will be affordable.

If you don't mind blowing out the details in your background then you can spot meter your subject so that it will be properly exposed.

If you want to preserve the background details/exposure, then you will need to use flash to fill in on the subject.

Dunno about GF2 and HDR features lol.

Here is something i found on the web:

How does the E-PL1 combat noise commonly found at high ISOs?

Digital cameras vary the light sensitivity of the image sensor by varying the gain voltage applied to the sensor, much like turning up the volume on a stereo. When the gain voltage is increased, as it is when shooting with higher ISOs, the sensor becomes hot. Hot pixels perform differently under extreme conditions. The result is a graininess known as “noise.”

Noise occurs whenever sufficient heat has built up on the image sensor. Therefore, it can also be seen in images with long exposures, such as night photographs, due to the additional heat generated by charging the sensor for an extended period of time. All digital cameras include technologies to minimize the effects of noise. The E-PL1 uses a sensor that dramatically decreases noise. In addition, it combats noise with two methods: NOISE FILTER and NOISE REDUCTION.

The NOISE FILTER function is found in the menu. It has four options: OFF, LOW, STANDARD and HIGH. The majority of digital cameras have a default noise filter that is always on. Some photographers feel that this reduces detail, so Olympus has included the option to not use a noise filter at all.

If NOISE FILTER is set to OFF, it is recommended to set the SHARPNESS setting to –2. If SHARPNESS is set to 0 it may exaggerate the noise when no noise filtering is being applied.

The NOISE REDUCTION function can also be enabled from the menu. After the first exposure, the camera makes a second exposure of equal length with the shutter closed. It then, in effect, overlays the two images, finds the hot pixels in the second image (essentially, any pixels that aren't black) and deletes the corresponding pixels from the first image. This doubles the shooting time. If the first exposure is 12 minutes 30 seconds, the second, black exposure will also be 12 minutes 30 seconds for a total exposure time of 25 minutes.

I always leave it to normal. I don't have the camera right now to confirm the settings. But I never really changed any settings.

Also remember to change the Gradation to Normal. Default is Auto and it always attempt to lift the shadows revealing noise in these areas. In my opinion, the best optimization is to shoot Raw and deal with them on the post processing stage.

This strikes me:
If NOISE FILTER is set to OFF, it is recommended to set the SHARPNESS setting to –2. If SHARPNESS is set to 0 it may exaggerate the noise when no noise filtering is being applied.

Me a jpeg too. Read somewhere that Oly Jpegs r as good as raw or is it the other way round. Tweaking raw has not much advantage as someone pointed.

Carl Zeiss joins m43. Though its a good news, but I wonder how many would be able to afford.

But at least that should be the driving force for Olympus to produce more bodies!
