I'm looking for a regular vet for my cat, but I just realized there are so many in the vicinity of my home! I used to go all the way to Right Angle, Sec 14 before discovering this forum. Funny how I used to wish that there were more vets in PJ, and when I got what I wished for, now I wish I knew which one to go to.

I don't see any comments here on Healing Pets in Damansara Jaya, had read good reviews on the doctor on other sites (other than friendly, committed to his emergency services). Frankly, I do not mind if the doctor is not super friendly to my pet, but more importantly is generous in dispensing advice, highly competent, reliable and of course reasonably priced. There were also good comments on Philos in Sec 17. Quite a few on Hands & Paws here. Some on Animal Health Centre @ Ara. There's also Kristy's Ark but I find only lukewarm respond. Like when choosing a GP/Specialist for myself/family, I'd check the credentials of the doctor first. The only vet that stated it I found so far was Animal Health Centre @ Ara, I was very impressed to know that one of the vets there is a visiting doctor at PAWS. I am very sympathetic towards homeless animals & had recently been to PAWS for a matter related to it. Torn between HP@DJ and AHC@Ara now, HP@DJ for convenience and reputation of reliability in emergencies, AHC@Ara to support doctors who are out to help homeless animals.

What would you suggest based on your experience with the vets I had just mentioned?

On an unrelated matter, I have this impression that there are vets out there who didn't choose veterinarian science as their first choice of studies in the Malaysian public uni application, but got placed in the course somehow and ended up as vets out of practicality, not passion. One important criteria I expect from a doctor is to have a desire to help those in need, before the financial and social incentives of having a Dr. in front of their name.

Added on November 16, 2010, 3:32 amOh dear, I didn't mean to post a New Topic. New to forums. Would anyone be kind enough to advise on how to delete this New Topic that I have just created?
Many thanks.

I think its ok for this to be a new post. It could be an interesting discussion on how to find a good vet... things like what to look out for, how we can go about finding out and what experiences people have had.

As far as your specific questions, as i'm not from the area i can't comment specifically on any of the vets however i can give you some advice:

Call up all the vet clinics you are interested in and ask them if you can come in for a chat (not for any specific reason just to meet them). Ask them when they are least busy and pop in to say hi (you might have to wait around a bit if they have a customer, but it is worth it to get n idea of what kind of vet they are without actually having an emergency).

While you are there, you can explain any concerns you have with a new vet and ask them for their credentials (i think most vets should have them displayed for all to see).

Finally if you have friends with pets in the area, ask them which vets they visit and what experiences they have had. This can help you judge how vets work (this is similar to asking on a forum but more localized). I'm sure some people on here will have experience with some of the vets you have mentioned so hopefully you get some clues here.

At the end of the day, the best thing is to actually visit the vet yourself, you can usually tell how interested they actually are in their job by meeting them. Also some vets are great with cats but terrible with dogs and vice-versa, so some opinions people have can be slightly misleading due to the animals they have in relation to that vet's area of expertise.

Good luck in your vet hunt. I know it is tough looking for a new vet to look after your pet.

Sad but true. But I suppose you could say the same about some doctors who treat people - a loved one had the misfortune of initially being treated by quite possibly the most arrogant neurologist known to mankind who was more concerned about proving his opinion was the only correct one and had absolutely horrible bedside manners. He was a referral from a doctor friend too - apparently he's a nicer friend than he is a doctor laugh.gif

My selection criteria depend. If it's for routine stuff like vaccs/spay-neuter of healthy dogs, I'm not too fussed about things like whether the vet goes out of his/her way to dispense advice. As long as the vet is competent and rates are reasonable I'm good. But if I've got a pet that has recurrent health issues and serious stuff that requires regular checkups and a treatment protocol (say, hip dysplasia or severe skin allergies) then I'd be a whole lot fussier, but thankfully my dogs are healthy and don't require anything more than routine checkups. Come to think of it, I've learned more about vet attitudes/competence taking rescues/fosters that have health issues to various vets than when I bring my own monkeys for checkups tongue.gif

Of the vets you've mentioned I'd recommend Dr. Steven @ Healing Pets the most highly out of the lot. Competent (not just knowledge-wise, but very good handling manners with pets), friendly, reasonable rates. Will PM you to elaborate.

For serious illness (parvo/distemper etc.) I highly recommend Dr. Edmund Yeoh at Bandar Puteri Vet, very experienced and handles a lot of rescue cases that for obvious reasons aren't exactly in the best of health during initial vet visits:

Bandar Puteri Veterinary Clinic and Surgery
16, Jalan Puteri 5/8, 47100 Bandar Puteri, Puchong, Selangor.
Tel: 03-8062 1038

For emergency cases that require full med facilities (X-ray MRI etc.), I've nothing but nice things to say about Gasing Vet Hospital:

Oh yes, i can second the recommendation for Dr Edmund. He is fantastic. He did a really great job for an amputation on a rescue a friend of mine adopted. He is also the vet who got my Peanut through her recent puppy delivering complications, my puppies (and probably Peanut) literally owe him their lives... lol.

Hi

I just bought a stray cat in Philos Sek 17 and the vet was really nice. Since I was doing a charity case, the vet gave me consideration and discounts on spaying the cat and about her board and food, since I cannot take the cat in. About your concern regarding the "desire to help", I can see that the vets in that clinic are really passionate about helping the animals. Plus the clinic has all these pet supplies so it may be a one-stop shop for you. Also I can see that they have a lot of customers/clients because each time I go there there are people coming in every now and then. I guess having lots of clients is a proof that they are really good at what they are doing.

Just my opinion. I hope you can decide on one soon biggrin.gif

I second this. My cat's health went downhill on Saturday night, and on Sunday, my family took him to a pretty well known vet (top of Google search if you checked for best vets in Petaling Jaya). The guy barely touched my cat, slapped us with an RM40 bill for consultation, then sent us on our way with the cat's condition completely unchanged.

By Monday, we thought we were going to lose him, then took him to Hands 'N' Paws (they weren't open on Sunday, or we would have made a beeline there earlier). Dr Lai is more knowledgeable, takes more time to check our cat, and takes the trouble to explain what the cat was going through. Also, unlike the other vet, who immediately suggested a whole barrage of tests the cat should go through can charge us more , this vet goes through a more step by step method. His priority was to stabilise my cat's condition first before trying anything else. Cat's condition is improving greatly now.

So yes, if you're a cat owner, definitely go look for him. I can't speak up on behalf of dog owners because I don't have any dogs, but I did see a dog with cancer brought in the same day my cat was sent there. The cancerous limb was amputated, but the dog's all perky now.

on a side note, if you see all sorts of pedigree cats and dogs around the main waiting area, you're most likely in the correct clinic. The guy picks up abandoned strays

Sorry if this seems inappropriate. I want to know if anyone knows a good vet in Shah Alam area? I live nearby Bkt Raja Shopping Mall, and the overpriced and overrated Teluk Pulai Bah Kut Teh shop.

Just moved into the area and not familiar yet. Have a cat in the family

I have visited Phileo's at Seksyen 17 PJ quite a few times, and feel that the vets are nice. So I can definitely recommend Phileo's. Will try out AHC or Hands N Paws at Ara Damansara as we have moved.
