hi all,

i plan to get SGS soon and being a WM6 user, i'm rather 'noob' to android custom rom. i had basically ran through some FAQs available on XDA forum but there're doubts that i would appreciate some clarifications from fella forumers:

assuming if i'm on stock rom Eclair 2.1,to flash to a custom rom, say doc's v8:

1. do i have to 'root' my device? if yes, which approach to apply?
i saw two options recommended:
a. chainfire's tool -- i'm confused of which one to use?

b. SuperOneClick v1.5.5 -- this seems to be seemless, any risk?

2. once i'm 'rooted', is it considered permanent (similar to Hard SPL in WinMo cooked rom?) if it is not permanent, do i have to repeat step 1. above each time i need to flash a new custom rom?

3. under "Pre-Requisites" on doc's page, it says:
a. "Disable Voodoo if have it installed" -- what is voodoo? do i have it with stock rom?
b. "Make sure have the 2e recovery. If you don't have 2e recovery, see FAQ." -- what is 2e? how to get them?

4. on custom rom installation, it says:
"Download clockworkmod recovery from here. You *need* Clockworkmod, this won’t work with stock recovery." -- is this 'rooting'? if i've done with step 1. above, do i still need this?

5. i have saw somewhere you can also flash rom with odin3, in the case with doc's rom, is odin3 still applicable?

6. in odin, when was the time that i should use:

a. PIT
b. PDA
c. PHONE
d. CSC?

really appreciate some experienced forumers can shed some lights as i'm a little worry of wrong-doing as i plan to flash to custom rom the moment i got it. thanks a million.

callmepaper,

don't worry bro, Im coming from winmo as well .. and im been using sgs only for 17 days, for the past 3 days i've been flashing countless time/hours, need sleep badly now, and after all that flashing and restoring .. then there is time to test software one by one (apps and games).

p/s: personally for me .. use MyBackupPro for your backup software.

haha.. sounds familiar during my days with WinMo cooked rom, at peak, i reflashed cooked rom 3 times a week. and now my dopod d810 is 'almost' dead. i think this new baby gonna kill my sleep too.

two silly questions:

1. does SGS with android 2.1 and above supports video call over 3g/wifi?
2. with the stock android 2.1/2.2 installed, do we still need to apply lagfix?
