hi all,
i plan to get SGS soon and being a WM6 user, i'm rather 'noob' to android custom rom. i had basically ran through some FAQs available on XDA forum but there're doubts that i would appreciate some clarifications from fella forumers:
okay first thing first, if you are planning to buy one, please do this clarification when buying, please do it, PLEASEEEE...... it save you alot of emotional trouble:
***Please check the recovery mode and download mode areENABLE on the phone you are buying. most of the new batch phone have this disable. you MUST have this mode enable to flash with peace of mind and soul, seriously im not kidding to check do the following sequence:
Recovery: volume up + home button + power button
Download: volume down + home button + power button
**if first time you dont succeed do one more time just to make sure, if still cant get into any of these mode, ask for replacement
**you can see the picture of download mode on the first page, recovery mode maybe you can search it on the web okay now that settle lets answer your questionassuming if i'm on stock rom Eclair 2.1,to flash to a custom rom, say doc's v8:
1. do i have to 'root' my device? if yes, which approach to apply?Â
<---- if you are on eclair, no need to root, for us who use outside region froyo, we nee to root to bypass some security.i saw two options recommended:
a.
chainfire's tool -- i'm confused of which one to use?
b.
SuperOneClick v1.5.5 -- this seems to be seemless, any risk?
<--- i always use this, no risk, never fail, well once or twice it fail but never do any harm to my phone, still can reboot.2. once i'm 'rooted', is it considered permanent (similar to Hard SPL in WinMo cooked rom?) if it is not permanent, do i have to repeat step 1. above each time i need to flash a new custom rom?
<--- no its not permanent, its just putting some file in the system folder, you can always unroot it, yes you need to repeat it each time you flash NEW FIRMWARE, custom roms mostly come with pre-rootedif you got trouble please do come and ask us again, if nobody answer you, can pm me directly,
3. under "Pre-Requisites" on doc's page, it says:
a. "Disable Voodoo if have it installed" -- what is voodoo? do i have it with stock rom?
<--- voodoo is a super effective lagfix, you will be getting some lags in stock rom, you will. but it is fixed by using various lagfix on the web, voodoo is one of the top lagfixb. "Make sure have the 2e recovery. If you don't have 2e recovery, see FAQ." -- what is 2e? how to get them?
<--- this is the security that i mention above that us, froyo user, have to bypass to flash the custom roms, eclair is already with 2e recovery, 2e is the version of the recovery mode that i ask you to check when buying the phone 4. on custom rom installation, it says:
"Download clockworkmod recovery from here. You *need* Clockworkmod, this won’t work with stock recovery." -- is this 'rooting'? if i've done with step 1. above, do i still need this?
<--- no this is not rooting, clockworkmod is sort of an ermm software?? it an improvement of the recovery mode, you no need to worry about getting this, it super easy. 5. i have saw somewhere you can also flash rom with odin3, in the case with doc's rom, is odin3 still applicable?
<--- no (well not that i know of), doc roms use update.zip, its a method we use to update the system by using recovery mode
6. in odin, when was the time that i should use:
<--- odin is a software that we use to flash firmware, and some lagfix/kernel, come back again when you are ready to flash firmware or you need to flash something with odin, usually they will mention it in description which method to use (update.zip/odin) a. PIT
b. PDA
c. PHONE
d. CSC?
really appreciate some experienced forumers can shed some lights as i'm a little worry of wrong-doing as i plan to flash to custom rom the moment i got it. thanks a million.
