BOWLING in the country received a new financial spin when the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) signed a RM10 million partnership with Astro at the Astro All Asia Broadcast Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
The deal will see Astro commit RM10 million over five years towards the development of bowling as a competitive and family sport in Malaysia through the creation of new events and tournaments which will be broadcast by the network.
Astro will also provide funds for the hiring of world class coaches and sending of national bowlers to compete abroad in addition to sponsoring MTBC events.
As part of the deal, Astro Arena, Astro's 24-hour local sports channel, will be given the rights to broadcast the Malaysian Open, National and Interstate championships as well as official tournaments organised by MTBC.
Henry Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Astro, said Astro wanted to help develop bowling on two different fronts.
"We are looking to promote bowling at the grassroots and social level as it is a sport that can be enjoyed by all regardless of sex, age and race, and can help curb social ills.
"At the same time, we are also looking to enhance the performance of our national bowlers.
"By helping to inspire more youths to get involved in bowling, the competitive aspect of the sport will also benefit as there will be a larger pool of players to choose from," said Tan.
MTBC president Datuk Dr P.S Nathan said he was delighted to have Astro support the development of bowling.
"This partnership will definitely help take Malaysian bowling to greater heights, thanks to Astro providing us greater mileage and visibility," he said.
Nathan added that despite Malaysia having a world class national bowling team, complacency was something to be wary of.
"Despite the good performances of our bowlers, we cannot afford to be happy with what we have and must strive to improve ourselves from the onset as it takes a good seven to eight years to develop a champion.
"We will be looking to bring in more world class coaches to help with our bowlers as at the moment we only have one world class coach supported by four or five up and coming coaches."
