the latest firmware has removed 1080p/23.976 Hz option, leaving behind the 24 Hz option. not too sure if i miss it as I use 1080p/50Hz, 24Hz makes the UI navigation feel choppy on my LCD...

I had to go with 50Hz partly cos I watch TVB shows etc that run at PAL 25fps, it would not sync well at 24Hz, too bad.

Does anyone know how we can make the subtitle positions for SRT subs stick? It always loads too high for me, and I have to push it down everytime I watch, can't find any option to make it "fixed"

The one thing that is missing in the new firmware as compared to wdlxtv firmware is the auto resolution/framerate in the firmware. This is the single most important feature that is not implemented in the official firmware.
*
hmm, maybe i should use that instead...

What is this auto framerate exactly? I thought there is this option in the display menu very long time oready?
*
i think ur referring to auto resolution for the HDMI settings. Selecting Auto would allow the WDTV to select the highest possible screen settings, which would be 1080p/60 on most modern Full HD TVs.

i'm using the latest firmware.
normally you select the resolution + refresh rate (1080p 60Hz, 1080p 50Hz, etc),

now just select auto, then auto framerate, then you're done. works fine for me

with auto framerate feature enabled, how do we know it is running at 24, 50 or 60?
*
depends whether your TV is able to show you that information or not.
On my Samsung, it will run at 1080p 60Hz in the UI. It will then switch when you start playing your movies, tv shows, videos etc. If there is a refresh rate change, my Samsung would go blank momentarily to switch refresh rate modes, and the OSD would indicate the current mode.

what you could do is decode AAC to WAV, then encode it to AC3 with eac3to (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125966), after that, remux the AC3 file back to ur MKV with mkvtoolnix, google around and you'd find what you need

hmm...should only take 1 or 2 minutes tops.

More than 1 hour means you're transcoding and not remuxing which is objective here.
*
he is re-encoding the AAC track to AC3...not just remuxing

If the concern is just to download torrents, a NAS drive would do the job perfectly since a decent NAS drive usually comes with at least 800MHz of processing power so it wouldn't have issues doing some minor multi-tasking. biggrin.gif

agreed. I use an old Synology DS207+ 2 bay NAS with my WDTV - awesome combo!

I prefer my WDTV Live to access my Synology NAS via Network Shares rather than DLNA/Media Servers, just because it will load external subtitles. Having to remux huge MKVs can be a real pain.

Not sure if I understand you correctly, but I don't have any problems with srt subtitles via the Media Server route.

Also, just like your Synology, my QNAP also uses Twonky to manage the media streaming. The advantage of using Media Server (Twonky) as opposed to Network Share is that you can customise the folder tree and search criteria via Twonky which you cannot do if using Network Share. The Network Share would bring you to the root folder, including all the unncessary clutter of misc folders if your hard disk folders are not well organised. I only use Network Share when I want to playback iso rips of my older concert dvds to access the dvd menu and specific song selection.

Hmm, that is really interesting! My previous DLNA server experience was with Serviio which is considered one of the best (and free) DLNA servers for PC. That was the route I took when I was sharing content from my PC and getting Windows 7 folder shares to the WDTV Live required alot of tinkering that I hated.
So I went for a NAS to save on electricity as well and found that the shared SMB folders were so easy to use with the WDTV Live that I just switched off the onboard DLNA server and have never had any issues, partly because my folders are quite organized as well.

Hmm, should I explore Twonky? Or is it a case of it ain't broken, don't fix it? Afterall, after a tiring day of work, I just want my stuff to just..work laugh.gif

I guess it really depends on what you want out of the NAS + wdtv combo. If you have organised your folders well and have no difficulties navigating to the desired content, then I guess stick with that and dont experiment with Twonky since Twonky has its own issues as well.

I think for movies, it's pretty straight forward. however for music, if you want to organise your files and search for it by IDv2/3 tags e.g. artist, album, genre, playlist etc. then you won't be able to do that thru the "network share" way. Twonky would allows you to do this. Twonky also allows me to define what folders that wdtv can access, and I narrow it down to only the media-related folders. My NAS also contains a lot of non-media related files (e.g. work backup, personal docs, etc.).

Anyway, if you do decide to go play with Twonky, make sure you download the latest version of Twonky. There has been several updates since the last time you looked at it. Btw, I used to use a 2-bay Synology (in mirror mode) as well some years back, but it died on me and along with it, all my sensitive data. I couldnt forgive Synology for that. So far, the QNAP has been good to me.
*
HMm noted on this. My Synology is 4 years old, and still good. Fortunately I don't have any critical data, just my entertainment content. thanks for the tips anyway smile.gif

yea, i bought it when it first came out, and been using it for so long. as long as you don't have advanced needs like bluray iso playback or lossless audio decoding/bitstreaming then it's okay.

the new player doesn't seem to be too attractive to users outside of US, as the emphasis is on online services that's only available for US residents.

considering that a majority of 1080p content uses DTSHDMA instead of TrueHD, it may not be sufficient enough for most existing WDTV Live users to upgrade.
