Normally when your swap usage is high, up to 120MB or more, you might start to experience some lag especially if it hits 150MB. So, if you notice this, you can try restart your N900.

Also, you can install a widget on the desktop to monitor processor and ram usage. If you notice the processor is stuck on 100%, then quickly open HTOP and see which process is causing it and kill it, or if you're unsure you should kill the process, you can do a restart.

Correction, Nokia giving more Customer Care to N8 compared to N900
N900 get more "care" from "The Communities"
If you have problems with your N900 (non hardware related), I think you'll find better support here than Nokia Care

For N8, I'm not really sure about the hardware problems; Maybe due to the "hard to remove" battery, which cause more problem because most users are used to "removing the battery solution". Secondly, if the phone hangs, sometimes you need to remove the battery and let the phone out of power source for a while, and re-try. But with N8, since the battery is hard to remove, this solution is hard to apply.

Anyway, my personal complain on the N8 is:
1. The MONO speaker and the placement of the speaker. Such a shame really with MONO speaker, following the traits of iPride.
2. Lack of physical keyboard; The physical keyboard is really useful in MANY situations. Having using N900 for longtime, using N8 without physical keyboard is really a pain. You're relying fully on the touch screen....
3. Finally, the AMOLED I suppose? It seems, it's normal on N8. I've tested another N8 at Nokia Shop with the picture I taken, seems having similar problems. It's wierd as last time I compare, there seems to be no such problem except on my device, unless that device is still VERY NEW and will become like that overtime.....

Which model?

Is your SIM Card new? Maybe you can try use eraser and rub the Sim Card contact area and try again.

Try to diagnose or try out holding the phone at different place for a short while and see if any area will cause the signal drop???

Anyway, by right, if it looses signal, it should be able to get back the signal without reboot. If yours requires reboot, something must be wrong, could be software/firmware of your device.

When the signal is lost, try put your N900 on the table and don't touch it, see if it able to pickup signals back again.
If still cannot, you can try change the "Network Mode" (under Settings-->Phone)
Change it to other mode, like "Dual", "3G", "GSM", see if there if it able to re-scan and pick-up the signal.
Btw, is your default mode = "Dual"?
