May I know the downlights you are using are with or without ballast? What are the differences? Which one is better? Thanks

I think most are using CFL/Energy saving bulbs, and they have built-in ballast already.

Ballast are used to stabilize the current flow to your lights, so that it doesn't flicker.

Both has it pros/cons, both would work well but the ones with ballast will have a longer lifespan for the bulbs.

ballast is created with purpose, which is not to fire up yr downlight with too much electricity.

the only pro i can see from not using ballast is cost. which is not worth, because your downlight will get spoil easily.

do check on LED lights....although expensive but its good to save cost in long term.

The problem i found downlight with ballast is hard to change once it hook to the plaster celling.

That is true. My ballast downlight can last for 8yrs till it get dull the color. But not spoil. Cheaper too. While the CFL average can last about 2yrs.

Yes that's true, my self end up using normal downlight. so far so good!

Anyone knows where can I look for a good energy saving downlight (incl mounting, full set)? Want to see the range for energy saving downlights and LED downlights.

In Kota Damansara, there is this shop which specilized in LED lights and bulbs..they are located in the row of shop facing the road going towards Giant kota damansara.

energy saving d/l or LED d/l are no difference , it's the matter of what bulbs u are using...

but at mainland.

Those E27 downlight will built in balast not lasting, life is even shorter if u have glass cover the fitting. The heat will build up and damage the bulb
whilst the PLC bulb with separate balast last very long... mine last 8 years.. and the $2.20 PLC bulb last 4 yrs and still going.
Never had problem with the balast as long as u dont use the one with aluminium coil..

I guess tech does improve over time.. my bro is using the usual energy saving bulb (GE, not OSram or Phil)with built-in ballast, no problem so far and it is coming to his 3rd year tenancy... The only caution he is aware is never put in 2 bulbs in a 4" d/l, heat is too much within.
