its never too late. i suggest u try it out right now before cataclysm so that u can experience vanilla wow maps and the new and revamped maps at the same time.

surely u can make friends. i started wow while knowing no one. my server zangarmarsh is almost purely white with the ocasional black. but after playing with many asian gamers, i feel that playing with americans are more fun coz they are not as hardcore as most asians.
