Welcome to F@M hackcremo! For using your CPU you have 2 choices :

1. Uniprocessor client - this is the "classic" F@H client with normal WUs that gives standard points
2. High performance CPU SMP client - WUs for this client give high points but have a shorter expiration period that typically requires you to have your laptop on 24/7

Although modern laptops nowadays come with powerful discrete GPUs and modern CPUs, I would not recommend folding on your laptop as it may get too hot, unless you run the CPU/GPU utilisation at e.g. 50% instead of the default 100% utilisation - although in my case my laptop has been running at 100% CPU utilisation for over 2 years with no issues running the F@H client.

Another point to note is GPU folding typically gives at least a 100 to 1000 time better efficiency compared to CPU folding, so unless your laptop is a Core i7 CPU with 4 cores and more then you are better off just using your GPU to fold.

If you need more information please feel free to post in the F@M forum. Fold on! biggrin.gif

Yup..my laptop equip with core i7 740qm with 4 core 8 logical thread and gpu is gtx 260m...right know i run 1 gpu client and i cpu clien..however when i check at task manager..its performance graph only 20%..i set my priority on cpu client is 90%..is it is all my core been utilize I dont know..help3..

For your CPU, sounds like you could have downloaded the uniprocesser client - try the SMP client instead and you should see it using all 8 logical cores. Then you can certainly lower the CPU utilisation when you configure the client by run the SMP client with the flag "-configonly -smp". Example below :

User name [Anonymous]? hackremo
Team Number [0]? 2999
Passkey []? <you can get your passkey here. Passkey FAQ here>
Use proxy (yes/no) [no]?
Acceptable size of work assignment and work result packets (bigger units
may have large memory demands) -- 'small' is <5MB, 'normal' is <10MB, and
'big' is >10MB (small/normal/big) [normal]? big
Change advanced options (yes/no) [no]? yes
Core Priority (idle/low) [idle]?
CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]? <any value you like, eg 90% as you said>
Disable highly optimized assembly code (no/yes) [no]?
Pause if battery power is being used (useful for laptops) (no/yes) [no]? yes
Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints (3-30) [15]?
Memory, in MB, to indicate (4083 available) [4083]?
Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced
scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [no]? yes
Ignore any deadline information (mainly useful if
system clock frequently has errors) (no/yes) [no]?
Machine ID (1-16) [1]?
Launch automatically, install as a service in this directory (yes/no) [no]? <enter YES so F@H starts up as as service everytime you start your PC, or no if you plan to start it up manually>
The following options require you to restart the client before they take effect
Disable CPU affinity lock (no/yes) [no]?
Additional client parameters []?
IP address to bind core to (for viewer) []?

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info. Fold on! biggrin.gif

I run 4 cpu smp client and at background 1 gpu client for gtx 260m...you see the performance graph average only 50%..

Scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [no]? yes...this setting i put NO for all cpu client...is it give big

effect on work unit???

Sure! For Folding@Home you can use either your CPU or GPU. In my case I use GPU primarily as my CPU is too old, and would not give me good efficiency. I have a GTX460 and a 8800gt folding 24/7.

Would you like to join us as well?  biggrin.gif

Ok I think I see your problem - yep, just 1 SMP client is sufficient. When it starts up it should detect you have 8 logical cores and use that accordingly. Secondly, since you are folding on your CPU and GPU, you have to use different machine ids. Eg if your GPU is set to 2, then you need to set your SMP client to use another number e.g. 1.

Since you are using both SMP and GPU clients, I recommend the following :

1. Start SMP client with parameter "-smp 7" so it only uses 7 cores, we should reserve one CPU core for the GPU
2. Run your GPU client normally - and right-click the GPU process (normally FAHcore_15.exe) -> Set Affinity and set it to use the remaining 8th core

Then you will have optimal points per day. Hope this helps! I see [url=http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=535070your stats[/url] in EOC already.

Well done! Fold on biggrin.gif

not at all! Very glad you can join us in F@M - feel free to post in the forum as well.

If you are starting the client as a service (if you answered YES to start as as service under the -configonly option) then you need to use regedit -> Find "Folding@Home" and append "-smp 7" to the FAH service commandline.

If you're starting your SMP client eg from a Windows shortcut then just append it accordingly e.g. under the Target :

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Folding@home\Folding@home\Folding@home.exe" -smp 7

Fold on! biggrin.gif

Done add -smp 7 parameter...how about set affinity for GPU...can it be done in task manager under process tab..?? i doing that way...is it right??

Ah no wonder! Possible to get your Evo kaki's to start folding again (eg pWs? I think only phunkydude folding for Evo now... sad.gif)

Folding on your laptop is not so ideal because of the extra heat generated, so please make sure it's well ventilated!

Ok your SMP client does not look good as it is still folding the normal Gromacs core. If it is SMP it should be "SMP2 Gromacs" under FAHmon. Can you check again if you have the correct client? And make sure to use "-smp 7" when running it? If you do then your CPU utilisation should be quite high.

I get about 14k+ ppd on the gtx460 and about 5k ppd on the 8800gt. My 8800gt is 2nd hand (bought for ~RM200) - if you don't mind, you can pick up some good and cheap 2nd hand h/w and start right away!

Fold on! biggrin.gif

Yup!! my laptop well ventilated, it have dual fan and also a notebook cooler pad underneath..also i use temperature program for monitoring heat generated on gpu and cpu..

I follow all your step..done twice right know still my fahmon show normal Gromacs score...help me..on task manger cpu utilization show NOT quite high..

Check my log, there are -smp7 parameter in it...

if want really good performance for folding.
i will suggest:
smp client: core i7 870.
gpu client: 2x GTX460 or GTX470. brows.gif
but this will definitely need more than rm1000. sweat.gif

so with rm1000, you want a cpu, a motherboard, 2x graphic card?
do you need ram also? unsure.gif
*
aiiiyoooo...that rig really produce a lllooooottsss of ppd..hahaha.. drool.gif
i want cpu, mobo that support multi gpu at least each lane run at minimum 8x, 1 graphic card only, later i maybe add up the remaining slot..
ram,power supply,hard disk,casing...
do you think can get those USED item under rm1000... hmm.gif

Please check this checklist to get bigger WU by using smp- bigadv flag...

QUOTE
-bigadv checklist

These are the requirements to recieve -bigadv WUs:

1.8 or more physical or logical cores.

2. 0.5 GB of ram per core dedicated to folding

3. You must have the Linux Client 6.29, or the Intel/OSX client, available from the main download page.

4. You must have a passkey

5. You must select big WUs in config

6. Advanced Methods must be turned off in advanced configuration

7. The proper start string is -bigadv -smp X -verbosity 9 (order doesn't matter) either in extra paramaters of advanced configuration or in the start string. X = number of FAH processes to run. You can set this number to number of cpu cores - 1, to allow cpu cycles for multiple GPU clients.

8. If you're running in a VMware Player 3.0.0 VM: you MUST edit the VMware Configuration File (.vmx) and change numvcpus from "4" to "8" and add priority.ungrabbed="idle"; You need 4300 MB of ram to run a full unix distro, 4200 MB for a light distro

9. Successfully complete 10 a2 or a3 WUs within the preferred deadline with your passkey to be eligible for the bonus. If you've folded the requisite qualifying WUs on any machine with your passkey, the -bigadv bonus will be awarded on your first -bigadv WU. If you have never used a passkey, fold 10 normal a2 or a3 WUs, after adding the passkey, before adding the -bigadv flag.

On the off chance that a long ago fixed problem has reentered the scene with this client, I suggest you enter an amount of memory to report to the assignment server during config. This isn't necessary if your client.cfg shows a memory amount.

taken from overclockers.com

The checklist number 1. seem give problem to you, if not mistaken you fold with i5 760 which only have 4 core and 4 thread only that not meet the requirment..

Hi guys! Just joined and downloaded the gpu client and started it immediately. Do I have to configure any additional settings? And wondering how much will it impact my electricity bill as I'll be using the gpu 24/7?
*
hye..sooryy for late response..being busy with test.. tongue.gif
first of all mind, listed your folding rig...what gpu and cpu use..

for electricity bill on 24/7 operation, first you need calculate using below calculator how much power your rig consume...
once you know how many wattage your rig use..post it here..i will calculate it for you..
for instance, i can only give you approximate amount not much accurate but can use as reference..
Power Supply calculator

QUOTE(FauxHawk @ Jan 20 2011, 10:52 PM)
I'm wondering this also. Anybody can teach how to calculate the expected increase in electricity bill? I'm also still looking for ways to keep my gpu cool. GTX 570 at 65c at 80% fan speed is like airplane already.
*
refer to my post above for electric bill..

gtx 570 use newer chip which GF 110 which highly power effecient and produce less heat..
is your case is well ventilate with cool air??
do you overclock your gtx 570??

my overclock gtx 460 at 900mhz core clock temp at 62'c on 24/7 folding operation..

Lets say 600w at full load. using worst case scenario, what will the the expected increase?

About the temp, i think it's decent, only a bit too noisy at that temp.
*
soorry for late reply..

for 600 watt worst case scenario, i assume you ar domestic user and live in malaysia..
below is tnb tariff..
user posted image

the calculation is:

600Watt/1000Watt=0.6 kW

0.6 kW x 24hour = 14.4 kWh which power consumption for one whole day..

than,

14.4 x 31 days = 446.4 kWh which for 1 month power consumption..

bill rate for domestic user more than 400 kWh per month is 28.6 sen

total is,

446.4 kWh x 0.286 sen= RM 127.70 (approximate)
