thought it will kill the gc but end up psu took the bullet... ohmy.gif

now replaced coolermaster gx 650w to continue folding... tongue.gif

Wow! I would think it is not directly due to folding, but is probably a PSU that is about to give up soon. I have been running the same PC for over 4 years 24/7 and replaced gfx cards from 7600gt -> 4870 -> gtx460 (both 4870 and gtx460 folding 100% 24/7) and no issues yet (touch wood!).

Let's take all discussions to the F@M forums - see you all there. Fold on biggrin.gif

i plan to install the SMP client on my lab's pc, let it fold 24-7, see how it goes. brows.gif

All FAH clients by default run on idle priority - so even though they take up CPU (eg in TaskMan), whenever you are running something active (eg surfing Internet with your web browser, or gaming, or movies) - it will *not* interfere with your CPU, as its priority is lower than the active tasks.

Eg on my laptop I run the uniprocessor CPU clients at 100% utilisation and I can still use my laptop as normal (surfing, Office tasks, movies etc). Try it! smile.gif

The only thing is your PC may generate extra heat as the CPU is running at 100% utilisation - so if you're not comfortable with this then you can run the client at eg 80% utilisation or similar.

good morning everyone!

FidelisGVR - Sounds like you are still using the classic uniprocessor client. As saturn85 mentioned, you need to use the SMP client, and start it with the "-smp" flag e.g. "fah.exe -configonly -smp" for first time config, and then ensure it has the "-smp" flag everytime after that. If you are running the console client and starting it as service then ensure you regedit the service commandline parameter to include the "-smp" flag as well.

Wow another GTX460 babeh! What are your gpu/shader clocks? For mine it is overclocked to 830/1660 @ 1V and it averages 61-63C at 100% load, so quite nice and not too hot.

Just watch your electricity bill and the temps and you'll be fine. Looking forward to seeing you in the top 25 producer list too biggrin.gif

@ diademz: i'm pretty sure i DLed the smp client... the size is less than 1 MB, correct?

i see i missed some steps there..

so what i should do is: create shortcut to desktop → r-click shortcut → at properties, i type in -configonly -smp ?

btw, i'm not starting the client as a service.

my gtx460 is all stock clock.. i don't see any need for me to OC it.. laugh.gif

it's an Asus gtx460 TOP direct cu 1GB version. idles at 39 C, while folding it shoots to around the same temps as yours, 61-63C.
*
Assuming you've downloaded the SMP client into e.g. C:\folding, open Command Prompt and navigate into this directory then type "fah.exe -configonly -smp" - 1st time configuration. If you don't run it as as as service, just ensure the shortcut has "-smp" and the "Start In" folder is pointing to C:\folding

Nice! That's the same card I got. I undervolted it to 1V and it's stable 24/7. You may want to try that to get cooler temps too (and less electricity bill!)

can use high performance client: brows.gif
SMP client for Athlon II X4

Welcome yshiuan! saturn85 is correct - you can use both the CPU SMP client and the GPU client to fold on both your X4 and 8600GTS.

Some things to consider beforehand - if you start folding and decide to do so 24/7 (as folding IS ADDICTIVE smile.gif) then be wary about your electricity bills, especially if you are not paying for them.

To kick you off - download the SMP client and configure it as per this guide. Then for GPU client, follow this guide.

Your X4 should be able to generate between 5k-7k ppd, whilst the 8600gts about 2k ppd making close to 10k ppd!

Do read the first post if you have not done so as it explains why we are doing it and what we get out of it.

If you have further questions, please post in the F@M forum!

Thanks for joining us once again, and fold on! biggrin.gif

jokes aside, i'd stick to smp for now..

Can't identify which project it is based on your viewer - do you mind posting your FAHmon screenie or FAHlog.txt? I run with the "-advmethods" parameter and just picked up the p6811 protein - this is one is hardcore and also increased my GPU temps by 8-10C to about 71C (from 61C).

If you don't want these state-of-the-art proteins then drop the "-advmethods" flag and you should pick up the "normal" proteins. It'd be a shame to lose you otherwise!

i didn't knew i can set parameters for the systray client.. can i?
*
Looks like you also picked up project 6800 (similar to 6811) - this one is also a "heavy" and indeed GPU temps would increase a little more.

I wouldn't worry too much about the GPU temps @ 66C - playnig demanding 3d games would definitely stress it as high (or even higher eg if you stresstest using Furmark or ATItool).

Another important point is the GTX460 is spec'ed to a max temp of 104C - so I won't worry too much. As long as there is adequate case cooling you should be fine. If you're really worried then run it at e.g. 80% GPU utlisation.

Which GTX460 did you get?

it's not the temps that really worries me, it's the high pitched buzz.. did you experience the buzz when folding the 6811?

EDIT: you're running the same 460 right? may i ask, what PSU are you using now?
*
Hmm now that you mention it I do remember getting a buzz when I was trying to o/c the hell out of my card a few weeks back, but I forgot all about it - now I don't have it anymore. Did you try undervolting it to reduce the temps?
If you play games, try a game that stresses the card and see if you get the buzz too?

OK, I just googled it and it appears it is quite apparent in some cards. Quoting from the ASUS rep :
QUOTE
JayCop,
The hissing or whining noise is coming from the chokes. It is a vibration that occurs when there is heavy heavy load like furmark or in this case folding. All of the 200 series and 400 series i have ran for folding make this noise, Even ATI cards. Most chokes will have some form of vibration, its just a matter of how long the heavy load is to elongate the vibration. Even in games, it will occur, but in game, you will only be in heavy load for a split second, where you may not even notice the noise coming from the GPU

QUOTE
jaycop, MSI actually uses a fully sealed choke so you don't hear the vibration or hissing sound. I wont stop you from buying the MSI card if it accomplishes what you need it to do, but i will also say that just because MSI uses fully sealed chokes and in a folding situation you hear less or no vibrations, doesn't mean the ASUS card is inferior. (not saying you did but for those that may be wondering) there are also many great advantages to the ASUS card like dust proof fans, which we have sealed ball bearing fans to increase fan life. but then again if you go water, that doesn't really matter... very nice heatsink design and the overlocking potential on the ASUS GTX460 is very high compared to many competitors out there. no reference or non reference are ever alike. The Vbios that we have implemented is different to our competitors. so if you you're assuming a GTX460 is the same as any other GTX460, the answer is no, there will always be some difference. even in choke design. Goodluck with your final decision

So it's apparently quite "normal" Mine is gone for now AFAIK...

Am using an Enermax FMA2 535W from the same home PC running 24/7 over 4 years ago. What do u use?

CPU for sure. For GPUs, Nvidia depends on the shader clock speed, and ATI I think is the general GPU clock speed.

Usually my pc is switched on 24/7 so hopefully something good would come out of this.  nod.gif

Sounds good! Since your PC is overclocked and running 24/7, you may want to try the SMP client as pointed out by bro saturn85.

Welcome to F@M FauxHawk! Don't bother with the unirprocessor CPU client especially on your i7, you can still fold on your GTX570 until you get a better CPU cooler and try the SMP client.

If you have further questions about what F@H is about, please do post in the F@M forums instead.

If you have not given the GPU tracker recommended by hackremo a go, there should be a fahlog.txt in the FAH directory - can you please post here?

Alternatively please post in the F@M forums - the visibility is much higher there and response should be faster as well.
