I've got a go at the BlackWidow Ultimate for a week now too (for testing only, decided not to keep).

The good:
- It's mech, it'll last long.
- MX blue switches, I know it is down to perspective and personal tastes, but I really like blue switches as I type more than I game on a PC these days. Feels, really really good. biggrin.gif
- Overall, the keyboard looks good. Nice backlighting, as you can adjust the brightness.
- Good gaming keyboard for RTS games mostly, as you won't naturally hold more than 2 keys at once.
- Macros? Macros are always a nice addition.

The bad:
- Like everyone has said, 2KRO. Phail, indeed.. phail. FPS gamers will hate this, if you're not hardcore and you only really press one key at a time... it's fine. But if you're a person who straffs diagonally while switching weapons back and forth, this is a fail.
- Even Razer says it is well optimised around the WASD area, I think it is still a turn off. You WILL need to readjust in order to compensate for the 2KRO issue.
- While I know Razer is all about the bling, the glossy exterior turns me off. Having to wipe off the dust every single morning is tedious, leaving the dust there will look like spiders live under the keyboard.
- Price... Nearly RM400 for the Ultimate and nearly RM300 for the Expert... I don't know, the Expert is an okay deal if you really just play RTS games. I think some people are selling the Expert for as low as RM280 now. But the Ultimate at RM400? Not worth it IMO, period.

All in all, I wouldn't call the BlackWidow a failure...
I mean, Razer could have really just upped their game on the keyboard. 4KRO would be nice, 6KRO better... I don't see the reason why they can't do this. RM400 for a 2KRO mech keyboard is a little bit of a turn off if you ask me.

Anyways with that said, returning this keyboard... ain't keeping it.

I played a bit of SC2 with it, and while my APM ain't as fast as I was in SC1... emm, it does cope up pretty well.
I think Razer is mainly targetting this keyboard at typists and RTS players, if you are one of em'... get the Expert, don't splurge an extra RM100+ for the Ultimate.

Based on what i know, the 2kro actually affected anything.
They say BW is 2KRO only because the the keyboard fail ZXC.
Even though a hardcord fps player won't stroke ZXC together.

Price wise, RM400 for a mechanical keyboard with backlit. For me it is super cheap.
Compare to 7G, the price is just really really reasonable.

Anyway myself will still stick on my 7G because of the epic wrist rest. And my personal preference is MX black or RED is best which totally  no click.
*
Definitely ZXC is an issue.
Honestly though, the problem isn't a huge deal... you just need to re-adjust, but for me it is just a turn off.

What I'm saying is that, it isn't as bad as most people make it up to be.
I belief that Razer could have done better, but did not.

QUOTE(jay @ Nov 25 2010, 11:18 PM)
cant the BW use a USB to PS/2 converter to achieve NKRO?
*
Can.
But on the ultimate, no lights and no macros.

For the expert, I can't say for sure since I don't have it but I'm pretty sure macros won't work too for the on-the-fly recording.
So if you're willing to fore-go macros, go for the expert... get a PS/2 adapter, and walla! Awesome keyboard for RM280.

I won't let the macro function if i get either bw expert or ultimate.
No point to buy it anymore. If fore go the macros why not just go for 6Gv2, das, deck, ducky filco or whatever. More switches can be choose.
*
Exactly.. so, take or gift.. The Black Widow (either Ultimate or Expert) could have been the best keyboard released this year if Razer could have done more.
I'm currently on a DAS Model S pro now actually, awesome keyboard. Even if it's loud as hell! tongue.gif

Just a simple mechanical keyboard with MX Brown switches, nothing special also, don't think it specialized for any game.

It is actually quite a popular keyboard in Korea, especially for the newbie SC2 player.
Mostly because of how cheap it is for a mechanical keyboard (it's actually quite a bit cheaper in comparison to the razer BW Expert even).

Not specialized for any game yea, but it is a rather good all-rounder.
But when you consider some of the best SC/SC2 players are using it and owning everyone in it, at this level it is more on skill instead.
Again all boils down to the price, which I'm sure you'll pick it up once you see it either ways.

The pulsing light ain't that bad on the BW Expert though, since the only decor LEDs on that one is the razer logo in front of the spacebar.

Then again, 2kro is the least of your worries. I'm getting a little annoyed by the necessity of wiping the keyboard at least once a week.
*
Depending how dusty your room is... you may need to wipe once a day even. rclxub.gif
Worst thant wiping the old glossy PS3. doh.gif

Sandblast the front cover and be done with that problem. It's pretty affordable too actually, getting a blackwidow expert and sandblasting it to get a poor man's filco.
*
And then throw the warranty out of the window? sweat.gif
Even if mechs are deemed to "it either works or it doesn't", that's not such a good idea ye?

NKRO is the best?

Only if you're utilizing them, if your APM is like 30 or 40... then forget aboout NKRO, it doesn't even matter.
If your typing speed is like 20 WPM, then again... forget about NKRO as well.

Ooh... 120-150 eh? notworthy.gif

I've seen people trying to look like a pro when their WPM is only 40+ with a ton of errors. Figures.

On a membrane, the fastest I've gone is 93 WPM. My average is at 70+ most of the time with 95% accuracy on average.

I'm having the same issue with the BW Expert also lol. Ironically buying the ducky would be cheaper than what I paid for the BW, considering the only reason I got it is because it was the cheapest mech keyboard available locally!

Think I'll be grabbing a pair of cherry browns for me and another friend, anyone else interested in getting one?

You getting this one?

It's personal opinion and choice. Some people prefer the G19 because it has tons of functionality, looks really cool and has an LCD screen.

I don't judge them, people have their likes.

Typing is all about the feel about it, we can't dictate a person's taste.

Just because I like Maggi Goreng doesn't mean you need to. Get what I mean?
*
Very much so.

Not everyone likes mech keyboards no matter how awesome they are.
Some people just love the soft deep membrane feel (hey I know it sounds wrong but... please.. tongue.gif ).
That's the way it is.

Then again.. everyone's eager to try red out too.. laugh.gif

Are there any recommended methods to clean or prevent the keyboard from dust?

I put the plastic cover provided by Ducky on the keyboard whenever I do not use the keyboard but still a lot of dust accumulates on my keyboard. Not surprising because my room is open-air.

Wet cloths are only so good at cleaning the keyboard. I need something more convenient.

I haven't tried those portable vacuum... I don't know if they are really effective considering the dust actually sticks on the keyboard quite well.
*
Seal your room up with no windows and no doors, then you won't get dust.

Honestly, preventing dust on the keyboard is unrealistic.
No matter how great of a clean-freak one is... so yea, live with it (you do not know how many times I have to wipe my DAS every day).

Get a good micro-fibre cloth (one which REALLY takes out dust with one wipe), not those capalang rm2 ones you can find in pasar malam. Of course I'm not saying to pay over RM10 for one piece that is.
A static duster also helps.

And then at the end of each month, remove your keyboard and clean thoroughly.

Mircosoft Sidewinder X4 software is very user friendly , the macro setup is easy. But hard to get use with the key layout , often mistype for example if i'm to press "a" key i pressed  the "caps lock" key. The biggest mistake microsoft makes is they design and arrange the S1~S6 macro key at the left side of the keyboard.

I can type really fast now with my filco keyboard.

Maybe i should get a filco for my son and he is standard 1 and learning computer typing now. Must train him in the professional way and with the right tool.

Very much agreed with this. thumbup.gif

Indeed BW hasn't been as good as expected, but still... it's not horrible.
Better than the majority of membrane keyboards out there.
