@BlueBerry~

I'm not surprised. Blacks are harder than blues after all doh.gif

But still i think the 2KRO may be too limiting for gaming.

Is your bw the ultimate edition with the fancy led ? or the budget model without the lighting ?

I can tell you though, the reason why some people can live without the led lighted keyboards, is because of these beautiful vintage cherry double shot key caps. The text contrast is so good, and they never wear out.

My lamp desk suffices for lighting. Besides it's not good to leave your room totally dark as you can hurt your eyes :/

I made an extensive review of my Ducky dk-9008 with double shots here

Very good news.

I managed to get hold of a G80-1295 HAU vintage keyboard with NKRO.

What i like about this keyboard

1. authentic vintage beige/white double shot 101 key caps

2. US Ansi layout

3. NKRO (perfect for gaming)

4. an IBM look alike casing. Very sturdy, and looks good as well. Cherry keyboard casings have been cheapened because of cost cutting after the 1000 series.

What i don't like about this keyboard

1. Cherry mx blacks. I plan on using the keyboard for gaming and just typing, so i can imagine blacks would be fine for gaming, but not so nice for just regular typing. But a native cherry blue, browns or clears with NKRO for the 1000 series is a near impossibility so this seems acceptable.

After all i could always mod it to other cherry switches :}

2. It uses an AT port. However there are AT to PS2 adapters so that shouldn't be a problem. It has also been tested to work when using AT>PS2>USB meaning 1 adapter to convert to ps2, and another to convert to usb.

Alternatively it could be modded to just have a ps2 cable then can just simply use a ps2 to usb adapter if required.

Actually razer shouldn't have problem with the switch I thought? Since they outsource from the same place as other keyboards. Unless they have a very bad mounting mechanism.

I blacklisted razer for their dying Krait on me, worse is when they think it's perfectly normal for a mouse to stop working after 13 months (12 months warranty period past). And I am not being the isolated case here. Other than marketing I dont see their strength in other area, being bling (which I hate), gaming peripheral (I use office production hardware due to their comfort nature), and useless feature (which they charge you sky high for it).

Currently I am so happy with my ducky 9008 that I feel like finding something type everyday. I would buy additional keyboard to serve for my other desktop but due to the steep price is better to buy it later (maybe I won't be able to hold that when Cherry Red Keyboards are around).

My parents eyes were rolling when they help me to carry the RM400+ ducky keyboard from Singapore. As well as my relatives and uncle aunties, cant explain what is so special about my keyboard. Just tell them it's like a mechanical watch vs a electrical watch!
*
Same problem here.

Most people i tell about my keyboard is like, there are 5 dollar keyboards what the f.

but then again most of these people aren't that tech savy so they don't get it doh.gif

So i guess since pc isn't such a big deal or huge part of their lives then no point trying to explain to them. You'd just put yourself in an awkward position.

The best way i justified my purchase of a vintage cherry keyboard was by linking this 775 USD ebay bid on a keyboard. Even the not so tech savy people can understand the collectible worth of some of these keyboards doh.gif

Say I am prepared to pay the higher price for the Filco and Steelseries, and besides they are both available in the warehouse instead of Ducky1008, which should I go for?

Pchome also does international shipping to Malaysia. Just so you know nod.gif

how much u got it?
*
35 USD.

total cost was 75.50 USD with the USPS international shipping already included.

The ebay value of this keyboard is 160 USD + so it was a pretty rare and good deal for me nod.gif

Did i mention i am ordering springs and a tool to do the ghetto cherry red mod ?

Here is a how to guide, to open up the cherry mx switches for a pcb mounted cherry keyboard.

Springs
http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=13251

Early G80-1000 may have had some quirks, but these issues were ironed out after the many revisions. Sadly these revisions also cost cutted by replacing NKRO with lesser kro. That is what makes my keyboard special. It is the newer revision for the 1000 series and yet still has NKRO, and yet retains the special qualities of the old 1000 series such as the white/beige doubleshots, and an IBM model M look alike durable casing. And it's also considered rare for this particular 1000 series model is the US ansi layout. This is what makes my keyboard especially rare as you will have a hard time finding anyone else selling a quality vintage Cherry G80-1295 HAU model wub.gif By the way mine is a 1992 model apparently according to the Cherry keyboard wiki on geekhack.

http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Dat...herry+keyboards

QUOTE
That would've been me. wink.gif Like I said, it apparently affected early revisions. I never had any problems with my early-'89 /17 (but there certainly was a good reason for this large number of revisions within a short time span).

A -1295 must be fairly new for a 1000 series board, since even a 1273 was from about '94 or so. Any bugs should have been worked out at this point.

Here is a review between the G81 vs G80 1000 series cherry keyboards

you can do the ghetto mx red.
i recommend not to do it.
because according to KBC, Cherry corp are officially releasing the cherry mx red switches this year.
you will see all kinds of keyboard vendor with cherry mx red soon.
biggrin.gif

Problem is the switches on the keyboard are blacks. Also i wouldn't know how to replace the switch if i could get reds.

Modding them to ghetto red seems doable for my skill.

Hi guys

I just found out an Ibm model m at home with cover all covered in dust
Dad own it with an IBM format PC since 1980's(pre 1985) if not mistaken and it is running healty from last time memories just a burnt fuse in the plug

Sadly it is using AT plug which is bigger than PS2
Plan to buy a to ps2 coverter but don't know where I can get it....
Appreciate the information you guys help

miss the old time clicky sounds and fed up with rubber dome yet dont have funds to get a new mechanical keyboard

cheers smile.gif

Your IBM Model M is a buckling spring. It's not nkro so it may do between 2-4KRO. Unless your going to be playing beatmania or o2jam it's not gonna matter. Ibm buckling spring keyboards are rather loud. Some people like them for typing.

You can get more information for the AT to PS2 adapters over at geekhack.

USB to PS2 adapter
http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=PS2-to-USB+adapters

For my vintage keyboard i'm using

5 PIN DIN (M) to 6 pin PS/2 (F)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Pro-Reverse...&sr=8-1-catcorr

With either a

NEWLink USB PS/2 Keyboard Adapter (N01210)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEWLink-USB-Keyboa...0/dp/B001GXR72E

and

6 inch Fully Rated USB Extension Cable A-A
http://www.amazon.co.uk/inch-Fully-Rated-E...95895364&sr=8-1

Or

Belkin USB PS/2 Adapter
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-USB-PS-2-Ad...95725083&sr=1-2

AT and PS2 share the same protocol by the way doh.gif

Nope i tried looking.

Thats why i'm ordering from the UK amazon since my brother is there at the moment.

It's free shipping in the UK so my brother can receive then bring it home to me when he comes back in a month or 2.

The AT to PS2 adapter i'm sure they must have it in Malaysia even though i couldn't find one.

But i am pretty sure Malaysia doesn't have the PS2 to USB blue cube and belkin adapter hmm.gif These 2 adapters have been shown in geekhack to be best compatible with old vintage keyboards from Cherrys, Ibms etc.

Not all PS2 to USB adapters perform the same. Some have quirks you may find irritating.

PS: i'm also in klang valley cool.gif

if the ps2 to usb adapter isn't either the blue cube or belkin, then i wouldn't recommend it.

There is no knowing if it would work well with old keyboards unless you've done research on it.

@thomadyeoh

If you do find the din5 to ps2 please let me know as well nod.gif

http://geekhack.org/attachment.php?attachm...=1&d=1242561147
VendorID: 13ba
ProductID: 0017

- Does not support ISO Layout
- Mouse somewhat jerky
- Supports Model M hmm.gif
- Does not support second keyboard in mouse port
- Protocol issue; when holding down a key, then hitting another key, the first key is no longer sent
*
Only the blue cube and belkin had the best support with hardly any problems. In light of that i think they are the better ones worth getting.

If you gonna sell vintage keyboard, don't sell it in Malaysia.

Put it on Japan yahoo or korean forum if you want to get a good price :}
