KUALA LUMPUR, 22 OCTOBER 2010- The world's first mass-market Android 2.2 smartphone, called IDEOS, has been launched in Malaysia, according to telecommunications solutions firm Huawei.

President of Huawei Device in Southern Pacific, Alex Jiang, said the IDEOS is available in Malaysia from 8 November for RM899 (US$289).

"An increasing number of mobile phone users are opting for smartphone as the technology has developed significantly in the past few years," said Jiang.

"The technology now complements today's fast-paced lifestyle," he said. "IDEOS is in line with Huawei's vision for a simpler and smarter world."

"The 'ID' in IDEOS represents the industrial design-centric hardware platform, the 'OS', the operating system as the core software platform and the 'E' symbolises the evolution to the mobile Internet," said Jiang.

Huawei Device offers network devices, including handsets, mobile broadband devices, convergence devices, and video solutions. The company has more than 6,000 employees working in more than 100 offices in 90 countries.

Affordable Android device

"The barrier of pricing of the high end smartphones has been met by the IDEOS," Jiang said. "In China, affordability of such devices was met by the development and infrastructure in the country."

"IDEOS is ergonomically designed to provide a variety of ways to access the Internet with download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and offering 3G + WiFi dual network support," he said. "Measuring 104mm x 55mm and 13.5 mm thickness, the IDEOS is light enough to be carried easily in the pocket and is available in four vibrant colours with support for SD memory card.

Retail research firm GfK Retail & Technology (Malaysia) general manager Jennifer Chan said Southeast Asia's smartphone share reached 12.4 per cent of the total mobile market in June 2010 from 5.6 per cent in the same period last year.

"About 60 per cent of phones sold in Malaysia are smartphones," said Chan. "Android-powered phones have risen significantly in the market in the last six months, mainly driven by the number of models launched."

"More smartphones will be available in the sub-US$200 price mark," she said. "Smartphones will outsell other mobile phones in the very near future, very likely by mid-2011."
