hmm....looks like the new batch will have non-removable battery?

question - does the current 4820TG have removable/changeable battery?

Thanks.

current 4820tg can remove battery without any screw...
*
so means it'll be like conventional laptop where u just slide the switch kinda thing?

the non-removable battery in the upcoming version is rumours or it's comfirmed?

guys....

Just wondering is it possible to buy a 4820TG without the windows 7? as in it's a blank hdd or just msdos and then they give the drivers/bloatware on a separate CD?

Coz i'm planning to install winXP, Vista, 7 x86, 7 x64. is it possible?

ok so i've seen from here that it's not possible to manage/resize/delete/create partitions when doing a recovery from the recovery partition/recovery dvd right?

It's only possible to mess with the partition when installing windows from a normal windows boot cd aka pirated or generic ones bought from outside right?

So if I install from the normal windows CD, does acer provide a CD with drivers? not necessary the latest but usable ones.

No cd with driver given, but you can burn it from the recovery if not mistaken...
*
quite troublesome i must say. coz i'm planning to install multiple OS on my own and i wont be able to download the drivers if I dont have the ethernet driver in the first place.

ok, I believe the drivers/power apps that comes or is pre-installed in the laptop is the version as of when the laptop was manufactured.

obviously I would need to download them if I want the latest ones. So does acer website provides the drivers and apps in a single package (ie. a single exe file with all the drivers in it) or do I have to download one for ethernet, one for sound, one for intel gfx, one for ATI, another one for those power management stuffs?

doh.gif doh.gif download one by one shakehead.gif

anyway, this switchable graphics is similar to the one found in macbooks right?

So how does it really works?

Battery : auto switches to intel. but will it change to ATI seamlessly if the need for power arises?

Plugged in : permanently on ATI?

so regardless of whether battery or plugged in, it will not be smart enough to switch for me? so for example....before i fire up photoshop, i gotta switch to ati first.

however, is the power management app smart enough to detect whether it's on battery and plugged in? will it change to intel for battery and ati for plugged in on boot up?

Yup, its a manual switch...
Macbook Pro way is different since its being handled by the Mac OSX itself...

Boot up will always ATi?
*
oooohh...now i get it. So it will always use ATI to boot up regardless of batt or plugged in.

After login in, power app will detect and switch to intel if it's on battery or leave it in ati if plugged in. correct?

That is why they do this in bios to make it boot up with intel - http://forum.notebookreview.com/7214705-post9986.html

correct?

oh...and what's the difference between 3820TG/4820TG and 3820T/4820T?

edit : any other difference besides T only has intel gfx while TG has switchable intel and ati.

hmmm.....if that's the case, then why is there a need to choose Intel only via bios? http://forum.notebookreview.com/7214705-post9986.html considering that fact that if u uninstall powersmart, it'll stay on intel until u change it.

also instead of doing it in the hidden intel menu, how about changing from switchable to discreet from here? http://www.imagebam.com/image/fae0a982795979

Common issues and solutions

Poor 3d performance / PCI-E runs at only x1 not x16. Installing the latest ATI Catalyst drives fixes this. See below:

QUOTE
Installing the latest ATI 5650 catalyst drivers. First make sure you install the stock Acer ATI vga driver. And then Intel HD Graphics driver. Then go into the systems bios (F2 on boot) and set the vga mode to discrete in the second screen. (See screenshot below) Install the newest ATI driver over the top of the existing and then reboot the notebook. Go back into the bios and change the options back to switchable.

Switchable to discrete means only ATi, they want it to run the integrated, Intel...
As for bios hack, maybe can ensure the GPU fan completely off ?
*
ahh i see. sorry sorry. I thought discreet is intel.

cowithgun can confirm about the gpu fan? will gpu fan continuously on if I just switch from the P button?

if disable from bios, gpu fan off?

I am also not sure why there is need to make it Intel only. Right now, I am not using PowerSmart, and if I switch to Intel, after reboot, it will still be Intel. No flicker of screen during login too, indicating that it was never using ATI (i believe).

Changing it to Discrete mean only ATI will be running, no more Intel.

Forget about the PCI-E x1, it was old issue, no longer relevant.  laugh.gif

if disable from bios, gpu fan off? does speedfan work with this acer? or like some ati catalyst app or etc? can see the fan speed from there right?

Can not control the speed fan...
*
so all fan speed is controlled by bios. but are we able to view the fan speed from speedfan? then we might be able to see whether gpu fan is on or not right?

on the other hand, i've read somewhere about setting the cooling policy in bios to passive or smth like dat. does that mean that if it's cold enough, fan will turn off? does this affect 2 fans or 1 only? so if gpu is disabled, it wont be hot right?

ya, that is another area which no one can solve yet..  brows.gif

but i can confirm the GPU fan will go OFF after i switch to Intel.

if i switch to ATI, the GPU fan will kick off and then will stabilize based on the temperature..
*
i believe kick on u mean. if that's the case, then why oh why do we need to mess with the hidden intel menu in BIOS?

does boot speed have anything to do with graphics? I think it's more on hdd speed right?

Don't think can view on the speedfan...

Not the bios, but on the power management policy..

p/s I wonder why they won't do the edge-to-edge screen on 3830TG like what they did to Acer 3935, since its glossy already, might as well go all the way down laugh.gif
*
where is this power management policy? under control panel or bios? passive means fan off when it's cool enough?

so the only possible reason one would wanna disable ATI from bios is maybe to install latest Intel driver?
