No. You don't need to be exceptionally well. You just need to have a bunch of rabid fans who would support your artwork/comic regardless of how crappy/tasteless it is (lol Megatokyo), or be lucky and meet someone high up who likes your mediocre-to-crap artwork (forgot the name of that American artist, but he's loathed by many because he can't draw and rips off anime characters/mechs alot, but got famous in the first place because the company's manager liked his crappy sketch for some new comic hero).

edit: here, found an old, old but recent pictar that I sketched with a pen, when I was bored waiting for my period to teach at an elementary school I taught earlier this year. Hopefully that'll last till night time before I upload the actual one
