It is actually very simple... I turn off my living room light off, find a darker background and I used sportlight for the tulip. After that I used PSP progam to add some contrast..that about all I did.

This looked normal compared to your other great shots man... but I'm more interested with your cup of coffee coz it looked like it's from a cafe but this is surely your room. Means you made the coffee yourself? How did you manage to create the 3 layer???

off topic... just wondering, how can i take macro as sharp as u guys (for eq, in this indoor pic i cant get it sharper)? eg. the lily in glyde's post? is my technique using my canon a60 still needs lotsa improvement or is the problem of the camera itself?

After taking so many lenglui photos on the AsiaDreamCars 2005, when came back my computer fail to boot.... motherboard died after 4 years.. So replaced it with new dual DDR type... and about selling off some of the relatively useless stuff...

I took all the shots using cheapest Sakure tripod and it sucks. None of the photo are pin sharp.... Most are seriously shaken... I guess only Manfrotto and above are real tripod.

Anyway, here is some of the photos I took and posted on the garage sells.

Notice that the RAM pictures are smaller. The problem is because I do not have macro lens nor close up lenses.... So it is the maximum magnication I can get, and need to do cropping.

These are the thing I have only... Also seem posting on the garage sells, why not post here also lo.....

The Sakure tripod are really jokes..... None photos sharp at 100%, most are even blur if the images fit into screen size. I guess there is just no real cheap solution for tripod. Any1 selling thier carbon fibre tripod to me for RM100?

By the way, what is "macro" by defination? I think anything close and small enought is considered "macro", right? If need higher magnification, my system fail to do liao.... Really dun feel like getting macro lenses as my interests are not here.

mac·ro lens

photographic lens for close-ups: a lens used for close-up photography that produces a lifesize or larger image on film, with a minimum of 1:1 object-to-image ratio

Anyway, I dont think ur photo is a macro shot as for my unerstanding Macro-shot is a close up shot and normally the image is a small image like flower or insect.

Below is the pic i took which i dont think its a macro-shot but it is a close-up shot.

The coloured flower in desatured surrounding is very easy.

Firstly,duplicate 2 layers.
2nd,desaturate the upper layer. Using different methosd to desaturate could produce a nice black and white.
3rd,use eraser to remove the upper layer flower...biggrin.gif

Wow... christan is indeed the best guy in macro here.... I am sure his Tamron SP90 is proud of him, of having such a skill and talented owner...

Tamron SP90 is also in my purchasing list after I upgrade my trusty EF100 f2 into my dream EF135 f2 L. I think the SP90 will be nice to fill tha focal length gap.

The baby snail from my garden after a midnight downpour. The shot was taken in the morning after I saw some baby snail in my garden. Baby snail = < 1 day old

The shots is very difficult to take and I wasted lots of time trying it. The size of the snail is almost the size of a button.

nope. no zoom in super macro mode. not even built-in flash. have to depend on ambient lighting or get an external flash.

I think people get too excited and forget the actual meaning & definition of "Macro Shot"..

Real macro photography means to get at least a life size image on the film, at a ratio of 1:1 up to 10:1...

so...i think i got it right...the original image size is 1280x960 which is exactly 1:1 ratio to the real obejct (eg. my samsung phone...)...

but to follow the rule of this forum the maximum size of posting an image is 800x600...so i resized the original image & that's why the object look a bit smaller than original size...

Thank you all for the appreciations. Anyway, I am using a Canon 20D with a 100mm Macro lens. I use flash mounted on a macro bracket. Using natural lighting will have been better but these insects don't stay still so flash is required.

this is my personal favorite and is one of the first macro pics i made:

Don't get too obsessed over equipment biggrin.gif . I read somewhere that you have a sigma 70-300 APO lens. You can get to 1:2 with that lens if i am not mistaken. Get a good quality closeup filter (preferably two element ones) and it will get you started. Set your lens to manual focus, and turn the focus ring to the closests focusing distance. Focus by moving your camera instead of turning the focusing ring. That will give you the highest magnificaton. Teleconverters and extension tubes can also help you get closer. The only problems you'll have is that you have to cope with the shutter speed and the dark viewfinder. Macro is only available from 200 to 300 so you have to set your shutter speed to at least 1/400 to minimize camera shake. A flash and/or tripod will help. If you are using flash, avoid direct flash so to avoid hard shadows. Try using a diffuser. Tripod is almost useless for insects. Lastly, you would want your aperture to be around F11-F16 to provide enough depth of field.

Thanks, just an additional advice, it will be very difficult to focus at first. You'll notice that there will be too much movement when trying to focus. Don't get disappointed, just keep practising. Brace your camera/hand/body somewhere to get some stability. When you get used to it, you'll learn to when to time your shutter release with your movement. And don't delete your bad shots right away, check them later to learn where you got wrong. smile.gif

I think the pictures lacks shadows gicing it a flat look. When focusing with a P&S camera, make sure that the distance to the subject is greater that than closest focusing distance of the camera or else the camera will end up focusing something behind the subject and therefore have the subject out of focus.

Thanks Adzley,

I'm still a newbie in this photography technique
was using telemacro on the FZ5 for the shot
at F4.5 and 1/320s shutter...
I need to blur out the background to make the main object stands out. smile.gif

Well, if the object and backgroud is far away, then it is possible to get such a blur background, especially at 12x

This is another image of the same flower, different angle a bit
setting at F4, 1/320s and max wide (36mm equivalent)
Crop, resize, add border & name in photoshop
and remove noise in Neat Image.. smile.gif

Here you can see that background actually grass lawn.. biggrin.gif
Quite far from object, thus the very blur on the first pix at maxed zoom

No offense, but I suggest that you try to take pictures of bigger subjects. The white flower in this case is blown out (too bright), probably due to the overall dark environment and the flash was set to full power by the camera.

Nicely composed. Maybe you might want to consider shifting your vantage until those fences in the background are no longer in the picture. IMHO I find them kinda distracting.

What camera do you use? Maybe we can help improve your pics. The main problem you'll have with small subjects (relative to the frame) is that your camera will not be able to meter properly, especially if it is a p&s. having a small bright subject in contrast with a dark background will most likely result to an over exposure of the subject. on the other hand, a small dark subject on a bright background will most likely be underexposed. Detail is important in macro, and when you crop too much, the loss of detail due to the lens or sensor will become more obvious. And composition in not just where you put your subject on the frame but is also how you "look" at the subject. Cropping will let you move the position but it can not let you change the point of view.

This was one of my pictures when I was starting up with macro. I used a non macro 50mm lens (didn't have a macro lens yet) then cropped. I didn't use flash to keep the contrast right.

Of coz dSLR is waayyyy much better than prosumer/P&S
with large sensor size and the lots...
but at least can know limitations and try to stretch it
until enuff $$ in pockets to re-invest into the new gadget.. drool.gif

1. Use a higher aperture (lower f stop, for example F2.8)
2. Or, look for an object when the distance between object and background is far apart

Cloud is not macro. Anyway, auto WB should be sufficient. You might want to meter the sky to get good colours, or be a pro and meter using your eyes smile.gif
Haha.... too technical? Just use a faster shutter speed like 1/500secs and medium aperture like F4.

As for macro, instead of the 2 options that I mentioned earlier, you can also bring a black or white card board. Just place it under your object so that the background will not be distracting to your object. Depending on your liking, some like black background, some like white, so just love other colours smile.gif

Hehe... I'll try again this weekend with my FZ5, if this flower is still alive. sweat.gif
I did try to shoot them previously using FZ5 but at zoom range, I need 1m distance which limited my movable range. Using the EF-S 18-55mm lense on 300D, I can move as close as 1 feet! Which is great for shooting flowers. But overall, the main difference is that DSLR will provide very smooth and vibrant colours. Also DOF is a piece of cake. Obviously, the large sensor ensure that noise level is very low. I love the capability of the 300D. Now... I need to borrow a D70 to check out the difference... next week. wink.gif

since this thread mostly posting macro shots.. i guess is appropriate to share my findings here..
is about using close up filter for macro photography...

from another forum.
QUOTE
Howard Owen quotes from the 6T manual...

``Both the No. 5T and the more powerful No. 6T close-up lenses are designed primarily for use with telephoto lenses ranging in focal length from 70mm to 210mm. (Although the accompanying lens to subject distant tables includes lenses of 28mm upto 300mm)...Nos. 5T and 6T are threaded on the front to accept filters, lens hoods, or a second close-up lens.''

There is also a quote relating to using both the 5T and 6T together :

``Nos 5T and 6T may be screwed together and used in combination to further extend the range of obtainable reproduction ratios, although this is not recommended for critical work.''
check out this web site.
Close up diopters - photo tips

I hope is useful for occasional macro photographer and does not want to spend 1XXX on a macro lens.

Wow Cikgu, excellent play with the lighting and angle for the Coin macro shot!!! I see you've upgraded from your FZ to the D50. DSLR makes a huge difference huh? I'm playing with my buddy's 300D and I'm loving the results!

I used to put on top of UV filter. But now I just put without - it is better to be close to the lens. Remember, stacking filters will make quality to drop especially when using single element filters such as Hoya macro filters

Dragonflies are not that difficult to get close too. The spider is a live one and I was able to get as close as 2inches without it jumping away. If you approach the insect slowly, you should be able to get close. smile.gif

these look like the caterpillar stage of the beautiful Lime Butterfly (Papilio demoleus malayanus)
this is what it will look like when it grews up:
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/...ae/demoleus.htm

The brown one i think is the same caterpillar at a later stage (just b4 it turns into the pupa (coccoon stage) but what is it doing on a frangipani? mmh, must call up some MNS experts.....

chowhofun, keep watching ur lime bushes, one day soon u'll notice all the fat caterpillars gone, and there'll be these alienlike thingys hanging upside down some of the branches.

just noticed u're with PNS.... thumbup.gif

do u notice any half eaten leaves on the lime bush? the caterpillar is usually very well camouflaged when it is enjoying itself in the lime plant so u may not notice it.
i'm going to check on my fu guai fa and frangipani to see if i can spot this critter too. drool.gif

nope, none on the fu guai fa and frangipani.

But i just found this young caterpillar (about 10mm long) on the lime bush. As it grows it will change into the green caterpillar like the Incredible Hulk!
user posted image

I managed to dig out an old, old shot I took of the caterpillar in the green phase (grown to about 60 mm long!), sorry, the colours have nearly faded from the photo....
user posted image

Doesn't look exactly like the same caterpillar, so i think i've misidentified yours. mmm, anyone knows which butterfly's caterpillars feed on the fu guai fa? i think i've also misidentified your plants! the brown caterpillar's on the fu guai fa (i thought it was a frangipani at first) and the green one on the ficus(?) i'm afraid i'm not much of a biologist.....

yes u're right, it is different, but i've a feeling it's from a butterfly of the same family - papilio, because the general size, shape and the markings show remarkable similarities. anyone in ur PNS group can help identify it?
i know that mine is the Lime butterfly, because i watched mine grow from eggs through the whole metamorphosis to butterfly in a large glass container. I actually had to feed it with fresh leaves from my lime bush every few hours, it was a voracious eater! I should still have the photos somewhere.....but this was more than 10 years ago.
When the butterfly finally emerged from the coccoon, i took some pics and then let it go.
It was a great experience.
Why kill it? the butterflies make my garden look great!
In fact i'll try to do a new photgraphic record of all the stages this particular fellow will go through to become a butterfly. Unless a wasp gets to it and lays an egg inside the poor chap. Then the coccoon will hatch a wasp instead of a beautiful butterfly....very sad. But that's how nature works.

you're talking about the water strider, but it's not a spider, it's an insect. (well, it's got only six legs and wings so it can't be an arachnid)
I didn't know it spins nets too. Mmmm, got to check the old nature books again.
But anyway, i like the shot.

I've been keeping eye on your thread too. Where do you normally go to take those flower shots? Your own garden? So much variety lah. The place must smell very heavenly!

Yes my own garden in Kuantan. I live in a corner house, so I have a small garden with flower and bugs. It is not as lively as what you see in the pic. Those bugs and flower is very small only. I use macro filter to magnify it.

In PJ nothing to shoot....Boring.

Hi all, Im really interested in Macro Photography and wish to learn fr u lots. I already sifted thru all 25 pages and found u guys (those who've posted) r very talented indeed.

Unfortunately, many, unlike the recent mikechai & ralf pix, do not carry any related info such as camera type, lens type, shutter speed, ISO, where taken etc. Im sure all these info can be useful to a newbie like me. So, hope u guys can be so kind to include them in ur future postings. Pretty please smile.gif

An exorbitantly ravishing feast for the eyes. Without question, you have gone beyond simply photographing a piece of nature, to capturing the exquisite majesty of the graceful butterfly. The imposing nature of the shot demands my attention and rewards me with the transcendental beauty of the florid butterfly's wings. If only I were present during the shoot so that I may revel in the gentle, sweet aromatic fragrance filling the surrounding air.

Another nature lover, eh?
And just to bring you down to earth, these are the probable ids of those `ravishing creatures' in the sequence they were posted (common names only, the scientific names are beyond my ability to remember), sweat.gif
1. the Common Tree Nymph
2. the Autumn Leaf
3. the Blue Glassy Tiger
4. the Malay Lacewing
Amongst these, my favourite is the Lacewing. It looks like a flying batik shirt, and the top view of the front wing is a deep velvet black with a yellow white stripe, and a hind wing of intense orange red with black border. It's a very lively, busy butterfly in flight. Always raises my spirit when I see one. biggrin.gif
