Rechargeable batteries not working on Wiimote?

For some unknown reason, my set of rechargeable batteries doesn't work on the Wiimote. When i slot it in and press any button, the LEDs didn't flash at all. At first i thought that i was using uncharged batteries but I tried it on my TV remote and it works.
Any idea why is this happening? |

'cos TV remote doesn't really justify, since it utilises very little energy. |
