WhatsApp itself will configure your internet settings ,
1. It lets you choose what is your preferred Connection (Wifi / 3G)
2. If you choose Wifi , it will turn on your Wifi 24/7 to search for signal (normally wifi searching is off when u r nt using it)

3. If there is no Wifi , it will automatically connect to 3G. (this is a bad thing for me cause there is no function to turn it off and it will charge you for 3G)

If you wanna turn off the Wifi searching, u nid to manually turn it off in the " Connectivity > Wireless LAN > Options >Settings > Turn off Wifi searching"

**there is no way to turn off the 3G connection if you have opened WhatsApp. Use it carefully.

Are you using nokia phone? If 3G is connected , you can see the 3G connected Logo in the homepage. Same thing for the Wifi connection. Make sure you are connected to Wifi, if not it will auto connect through 3G and you will be cahrged.

Yes you are right, so it is better not to open the WhatsApp until you found an area covered with Wifi.

On top of that, if the wifi signal is lost, it will immediately search for 3G. Better avoid using it if can.

Hi, how do you guys quit/terminate the app for good?
It's quite irritating having the app automatically re-open everytime you press and hold your "Menu" button and quit the app but it'll re-open after a few seconds!

what happens when you're at a mall? cause for most wifi's in the mall, they'll ask you to key in the password etc. so this whatsapp will auto connect to my 3G then? D:

i just got this app and i really love......... and hate it too. it keeps auto connecting to my wifi at home.

whatsapp is good chatting software after BBM on BlackBerry.
I use both BBM on Blackberry Bold9000 and whatsapp on N97.

It pretty conveniance.dun bother about the 1 year licence, just uninstall n install it back.

Whatsapp can do group conference like BBM up to 11 peoples. Soo cool.

Make sure to have dataplan if using whatsapp as it will always looking for connection.(which is conveniance to me,no need to keep login like Nimbuzz)

anyone else using whatsapp on N97? Feel any lagging sluggish issues? Or is it just me?

Sorry, no. Our Nokia version of the application is designed to always be online and connected. If you are concerned about your data usage, we strongly recommend that you sign up for unlimited internet data plan to take full advantage of our service.

I found a way to kill Whatsapp.

1. Install JbakTaskman
2. Launch JbakTaskman
3. Menu - Settings - Ext Settings
4. Under green key in main window section, choose Memory Clean.
5. Menu - Tools - Processes
6. You will see lots of processes running
7. Identify these three components - whatsapp, procmgrserver, loggerseerver
8. On each process, click Menu > program rules
9. Under program rules, tick kill after boot & kill by memory clean (repeat for all 3 processes)
10. Exit.
11. Launch task again
12. Scroll to Whatsapp, press green dial button.
13. Whatsapp has been killed.

So, from what I gather: WhatsApp is good for cheap messaging because it is based on either Wi-Fi connection or data package BUT for Nokia phones, there is no way to turn the application off from either trying to search for a Wi-Fi connection/3G connection, thereby eating up battery life. So, in the long run, is it even a good app for Nokia phones? Unless WhatsApp comes up with an "off" button, it will just continue to search and search for connection, right? unsure.gif

Yes, unless the dev allow us to choose which connection and give us the option to off it, this app is pretty killing to the phone battery, making it quite a bad app. Wait for dev update. Hopefully whistling.gif

I understand now the point of whatsapp is to always be connected. No way they will give option to turn it off, no matter how many updates they are going to do because that would beat the purpose of whatsapp.
What I want is for them to integrate symbian's push notification properly so it won't drain battery like it does now.
Anyway even as it is, I would never call it a bad app.

I uninstalled Whatsapp because of this problem:

1. Phone have about 35MB free memory.
2. Did not launch Whatsapp.
3. Launch OVI maps and Camera often give me "not enough memory" warning. How do I geo-tag without those 2 application?

Sometimes, just using OVI for navigation (and nothing else) will also give me that warning.

Im using WhatApps on my N95. So far its ok. Yes it will drain up ur battery life but make sure you turn it off when u dont want to use it.

This is my way to turn it off when im not in the WIFI area.
I just use or enable it when im stay longer time in a WIFI coverage such as in office or my home.

1. make sure you have install WhatApp
2. Install NetQin Mobile Guide (Im using V3.0) Its Free
3. Run Mobile Guide, On the MENU, choose BOOTMGR
4. Choose WhatApp, click option and choose DISABLE AUTO START
(This will prevent WhatApp from autorun on phone boot.)
5. Reboot your phone or
6. go to MENU, choose APP MGR, go to PROCESS and find for WhatsApp, ProgMgrServer and LoggerServer. Press
option and CLOSE PROCESSES.
(This will TURN the WhatApp OFF)

To launch WhatApp, just launch press the icon manually.

To turn it OFF repeat step 6.

it is either you off the connection or you close the apps , but once you close / off the connection.. you won't receive message at that time...

I'm new to this app and thinking of trying it out. I'm a prepaid user and have been using sms all this while. Never really thought of switching o postpaid because most of the time my bills never really exceed rm40 a month. Now that I'm using my phone to browse more often, I'm thinking whether its a good idea.
Is this app worth it for prepaid users and will it be cheaper than sms? Since this app is connected all the time, does that mean that my prepaid credit will keep on deducting each day even when I'm not using it?

it will deduct the credit when u use whatsapp by using mobile network connection , you also can use wifi connection if you want to save your credit.. tongue.gif

what telco that u use..? , basically... whatsapp not using much data., if you are not using any data plan, for celcom, maxis and digi , Pay per use rate is RM 0.10/kb smile.gif , but for Umobile and Tune Talk is RM 0.05/MB which is cheaper..

whatsapp will be cheaper than sms if u are really often SMS before this ,

let say.. you SMS around 300SMS per month , 300SMS = RM 0.10 x 300 = RM30 , << this is example, it is depend on your usage, rate and telco biggrin.gif ,

in whatsapp , it using data , so.. if you have data plan.. it will be cheaper...

for example, 300 messages in whatsapp = maybe not more than 100kb , RM 0.10 X 100 = RM 10 , << this is example, it is depend on your usage rate and telco..

anyway.. you don't need to always open your whatsapp , you can close it if you dont want to open/use it..

once you open the whatsapp, u will require internet connection, but not much data will be needed, more data will be downloaded once you receive message smile.gif

so, the best way is subscribe to data plan[if you need it] ..

I suppose one of the problem is that if someone sends me a message using whatsapp, I won't be able to receive it unless I'm connected to wifi or using mobile network connection. Is it true? Whereas I can recieve sms anytime anywhere.

I'm using Digi prepaid. Guess I'll have to check their site and see if theres any suitable plan for me.

anyway.. you are using Symbian phone rights..?

for Digi Prepaid, there are data plans too ,

anyway, which Digi Prepaid Plan that u use..? Best Prepaid Plan...? Easy prepaid ..? Byond Prepaid .? Digi Campus Plan ..? or others..? the rate is different..

anyway, you can always the weekly internet package,

Mobile Internet Weekly - RM 15/week , quota = 250MB per week biggrin.gif , no extra charge if you exceeded the quota.

you still can receive your message later ... but for Whatsapp for Symbian, there are no way to log out from whatsapp because it will be always connected smile.gif ,

you only can turn off the mobile connection through settings smile.gif , so it will prevent you from using the connection..

Yup, using Symbian on the Nokia X6. And I seriously have no idea which prepaid plan am I using. I've been using the same one for almost 10 years. lol. I just simply picked one at the store and have been using it ever since. Didn't even know there are different plans.
Thanks again for the info and suggestions. smile.gif

for Digi Prepaid, there are data plans too ,

anyway, which Digi Prepaid Plan that u use..? Best Prepaid Plan...? Easy prepaid ..? Byond Prepaid .? Digi Campus Plan ..? or others..? the rate is different..

anyway, you can always the weekly internet package,

Mobile Internet Weekly - RM 15/week , quota = 250MB per week  biggrin.gif  , no extra charge if you exceeded the quota.
you still can receive your message later ... but for Whatsapp for Symbian, there are no way to log out from whatsapp because it will be always connected smile.gif  ,

you only can turn off the mobile connection through settings  smile.gif  , so it will prevent you from using the connection..

settings --> connectivity --> settings --> data use in home country --> always ask , so that.. you can just cancel when it prompts you to connect to the internet

Browsers --> settings --> General --> access point --> ask when needed

if you want to completely turn off the connection ,

settings --> connectivity --> settings --> destinations --> delete access point that related ,

but when you want to connect again, you need to redownload the settings from your telco..

I'm thinking of getting the DG Smart Plan™ 48 (1GB a month) just to use whatsapp (and maybe just do a little bit of surfing). Is that good enough? Or should I get a package with 3GB a month?

if you use mainly Whatsapp and very little surfing, the 300MB package is enough. I have used it before and it's more than enough.

1GB like kinda too much for whatsapp. About 10MB is consider too much already for texting. If you receive and send files alot might take 100MB

better u ask there.. because u use iPhone, i bet there are many iPhone user that use whatsapp rather than Symbian user that know whatsapp functionality in iPhone..

AFAIK, even you turn off wifi in the settings, whatsapp still search for it if you dont have internet connection while opening whatsapp,

Not too sure how cheap is cheap. I guess most smartphones these days can accomodate Whatsapp. You can use Whatsapp with all Nokia smartphones as the application can be downloaded from the Nokia store. It can be used with wifi once the phone is configured that way. I am sure other phones will allow this as well.

It may be more prudent to choose a phone that you prefer more in terms of features and design since Whatsapp is available in most smartphones.

I already have an iphone, so i wanted something simple. How much are the Nokia phones that can support whatsapp and what are the models?

I know Samsung Wonder Y (i think this is the model) is RM399.

For Nokia phone models that can support whatsapp and the price, you can refer to the link below. Apparently the cheapest Nokia phone that supports wifi is Nokia C3 (RM320-330). Can probably get cheaper prices in-store.

Mobile88 Eprice Link

You can check the prices of other phones as well. Usually phones with wifi features will have allowance for Whatsapp, since one can download the application from the respective online stores. I know this service is available with Nokia, not too sure about other manufacturers, hence best is to check with the phone sellers or use google. Or perhaps others here can advise.

Basically in the link above, you can check on the phones that come with wifi and their respective prices.

It's 1-year free trial. You can buy the service during or after the trial period. It's a nice app.

But, what it really disappoints me is it uses too much RAM. It sucks almost all my Nokia 6120c RAM until I can't open any other apps.

"Memory full. Close other applications and try again."

Anybody had this problem before?

Guys, this is the only way to use WhatsApp without using your data (3G/GPRS). After you deleted the access points, you won't able to receive MMS. But think, how many MMS you receive compare to whatsApp messages? rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

Not all Nokia phone can turn off 3G/Cellular connection unless you delete the 3G Access Point. But you have problem when you need to receive MMS.

However, a decent phone are all "smart phone" already.

sure will be happening this manner because Symbian software is really slow and the processor of the Phone is not for this kinda of application. Like you play latest computer game at Pentium processor computer, you will also feel that the respond is slow.

I do remember my old Symbian 40, 50, and 60 all of them will be in trouble if the memory is almost full, if hangs then have to send it to the shop to reformat the stupid Phone in order to be able to use again!

yes and have to go to the stupid telecom office like Celcom and Maxis to redo the configuration, at that time there is no auto detect on it. everything manual.

i have a question, i'd installed whatapp in my n85 2 years ago i think, and i use it for a short while only because of the battery drain problem, i uninstalled it. However my friends keep seeing me to be online till now and they sent messages without me knowing. I dont want them to think im rude for not replying their messages since i dont use the app anymore..how to turn off the status?

The recent update on Symbian is stupid.

The application will auto start even if I force closed it. Natively there is no way to completely close the app. So previously I force close it with NetQin or Taskman.

Now it will auto start even after you force close it. Connecting my wifi network. This is insane.
