QUOTE
He may never again play the game he loves

MALACCA: His passion is basketball and Tan Giin Rong played for his former school SMK Gajah Berang before continuing his love for the game as a player for Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman where he studies.

Now, all the 18-year-old can hope for is to sit upright after becoming paralysed from the waist down due to a serious spinal injury suffered during the horrific bus crash along the North-South Expressway that killed 12 people.

Tan, who started his mechanical engineering course five months ago, was transferred from the Malacca Hospital yesterday afternoon to undergo surgery at the Mahkota Medical Centre here scheduled for today.

Despite being aware of her son’s predicament, his mother, Yong Siew Yen, 45, remains hopeful that the surgery would at least give her son some mobility to his lower back.

“I was told he will never be able to use his legs again and that the surgery would at least allow him to sit upright,” said the pharmaceutical product promoter.

“I hope that the surgery will be successful so that he will not be totally bedridden for the rest of his life.”

Tan was rushed to the Malacca Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) and was deemed stable to undergo the surgery by doctors.

Yong described Tan as a filial son who would bring his friends to meet the family during his fortnightly trip home at Taman Merdeka Jaya in Batu Berendam, and said Tan’s siblings were equally devastated by the news.

A former classmate Ian Choo, 18, said that Tan is a jovial and active person who loves playing basketball.

“He was very active in school and even represented our school in the basketball team.

“He continued to play even after enrolling in TAR college and succeeded in making the college basketball team recently,” he said after visiting a still-unconscious Tan at the private medical centre yesterday.

Testimony of Tan’s friendly personality is evident from the hundreds of messages posted on his Facebook wall wishing him a speedy recovery.

Furniture shop staff Lee Han Wei, 28, whose left arm was amputated due to the accident, said the most important thing for him was to be alive.

“This was my fourth accident in the past 10 years. I escaped everytime,” he said, adding that he chose to face his predicament with an optimistic attitude.

The men seated beside and behind him both died in the crash, he said.

However, Lee, who had just finished talking to his girlfriend on his handphone when the accident occurred, said he would not be travelling on express buses anymore.

“Within two seconds, my left arm was crushed under the window and I couldn’t move,” he said, adding that firemen helped him out of the bus 30 minutes later.

I hope someone is held accountable to this. Many of those lost or injured are young people. These people have bright future awaiting them.

everyone's covering their asses. So the most convenient scape goat is the driver. he's dead and will not be able to defend himself.

Bus company gave only RM1000 < yes RM1k only to the DEAD = DECEASED. Wat can we expect to get from bus insurance under that company when they lose 1 arm? or legs? RM1000 divide by how many part of the body do we have? doh.gif

I would say we are too soon to blame the driver alone.

What if the company is giving the driver tight schedule which is almost impossible?

What if the company is encouraging him to speed and reach destination faster?

We must also check the driver profile. Is he speed all the time? Is he a careless driver?

We havent know it yet.

The gov must setup an independent investigation body to investigate this matter as almost all Malaysian travel by bus.

PLUS also can share responsibility if the guard rail proven low quality and if not provide enuf lighting at difficult cornering.

Ada but every 10000000 km only you see one. On PLUS only. The Mitsubishi Storm in yellow with green checkered thingy. They're not exactly patrol but yeah, they can and should also be able to do the same as a patrol. Just that their mind is set to "Boss says go see got any problem on highway or not. Didn't order me to warn speeding drivers."

I believe it is not the driver's fault.

Maybe other factors causing the tragic.

Such as there is a car accidently turned on its high beam light resulted the bus driver cant focus and so on...

It's not the driver's fault,
if the driver was not speeding (i'm sure he is speeding)
if the driver had enough rest (which i bet he didn't have)
if other cars from other side hit it

btw, if other car turn on high beam, you still wont run to other side of the road - not even on federal road

The blame game would go nowhere. the government point here and there, we point here and there.

maybe the "someone" is fate, which should be blamed. shit happens all the time. depends on how we react/approach it and if there is truly something/someone watching over us during that split second.

Police reports already said this driver has not even issued a speeding summon in his lifetime... Even for me, I have been issued 2 summon already despite not being a taxi or bus driver.

So I assumed the driver must be a careful driver.

2nd, if the driver have not enough sleep or rest, I 100% sure the police have already found out by today. (this factor is not difficult to be investigated).

There are many other factors... such as suddenly a fly or mosquito or other insects bit him or flied into his nose bla bla bla..

Why so fast conclude it is the driver's fault??

Such as there is a car accidently turned on its high beam light resulted the bus driver cant focus and so on...

I hope someone is held accountable to this. Many of those lost or injured are young people. These people have bright future awaiting them.

Good news. Heard that the teen had undergone the operation, and is now able to stand and walk.

Tat bus driver once reach highway drive like a hell rider.. damn fast... very fast indeed.. think about 150-170 km/hr
Even the highway lane broken white lines becomes straight lines because the bus speeding very fast.. can feel like the bus is like flying...

Think back.. really luki tat time no accident.

oii..first time I heard a bus kilang can go 170km/h doh.gif

I think the bus suspension was so unstable that 120km/h felt like 170!
