That's because you just delete Grub boot linux system. How to solve. First, you have to insert WinXp cd and boot.  Select repair for this option  Select WinXp partition (Enter admin password if any).  Type the command as below: FIXBOOT <enter> Press Y <enter> Enter command; FIXMBR <enter> Press Y <enter> Restart PC .. Windows should be running as usual. Use Partition Magic or Hirens Boot CD to delete Linux partion. Finish.

Try fedora or opensuse. Else, madriva.
Fedora work well on my Dell inspiron 1420.
