Try to delete the whole partition using gparted on Ubuntu LiveCD. Then try installing Windows on the laptop.

Keep the LiveCD, its very useful. Imagine if you cannot boot into Windows/Ubuntu, and you have tried all options and the only other option is to reformat, you can backup your data using live cd

ok, sorry for the confusion. the HDD is a 80gb with 10gb, 35gb and 35gb space. previously i was using XP and installed it to the 10gb partitioned. after checking out ubuntu, i planned to install it and formatted the 10gb and installed it with gutsy gibbon. now, since my gf want to use the lappy i need to install back XP. and the problem start to occur. i dont want to mess around with both the 35gb partitioned.

i deleted the 10gb partition using gparted in LiveCd. but still, it is not working. the formatting menu is not there. (after inserting the XP cd). this disk is not contain a winXP compatible partition. that's the message i got.
