Android roars past iPhone in US

Sales of smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system have overtaken Apple's iPhone in the US for the first time, according to data released Tuesday by Nielsen.

The survey found that Android's share of the smartphone market in the six months ending in August, jumped from 14 percent to 32 percent, while the iPhone dropped from 32 percent to 25 percent. Sales of RIM's Blackberry dropped from 34 percent to 26 percent.

Android, which trailed the iPhone and Blackberry by several years in coming to the market, still has plenty of work to catch up. Its portion of overall market share jumped from eight percent to 19 percent in August. RIM retained first place, down from 36 percent to 31 percent, while the iPhone dropped one point to 28 percent.

The data reflected the increasing popularity of Android, which powers dozens of different smartphones made by Motorola, HTC, Samsung and LG, which are sold by all the major US carriers.

PC World analyst Tony Bradley said a continuation of the current trend would relegate the iPhone to niche status - similar to that of Apple's Mac computers. He cited Apple's tight control over hardware and software and the iPhone's exclusivity agreement with AT&T as the main reasons for its falling market share.

But bro, the last time the Nielsen figure was published, people from the iPhoney camp were crying that it didnt take into account iOS4 sales since the data collected then was before iPhone 4 was launched. Let's see what excuse they'll come up with this time.

forget it... iPhone user will never overtake Android users.. Unless Apple bring down their iphone' price tag and come out with few models.

And Apple better come out with some better name...

iOS is tied to Apple hardware, Android is not, so its Apple alone vs HTC, Motorola, Samsung, many others manufacturers combined, in the long run, who will win in figures? clearly a no brainer answer

it is always Apple's philosophy to emphasis software+hardware into one package, but sooner or later, iPhone will become like existing Macs which are nothing more than niche products thanks to their egocentric culture

Funny the report never mention Nokia................... I always thought it was the leader by a larger margin.

the report is made for US only... Actually in US, Nokia don't really exist.. barely hold 3% of the market only..

because ios 4.2 isnt out and the list goes on ...

- phone name
- interface
- OS
- design
- everything

My friend has an Iphone 4, and he try and compare it with my Legend, the only thing that he can surpass my Legend is the processor speed, 1gb vs 600mb, other than that nothing much to say

really? i played with android n iphone, both ntg much oso.. wat apps can install anyway? the games are all like paper basket , those lame games right... or am i missing some stuff? lol

you can try paid apps..much more better, i think i played those paper basket before, it's free

Well, u should try game like toonwarz, exzeus, raging thunder, angry bird, robodefense, asphalt, amergadon squadron, speedforce, etc. All are my fav games on android :-)

even the tiny x10 mini can play nfs: shift..

unless u only use phone 2make calls & sms, then whatever smartphone also ntg much.

im sick actually when ppl see my magic n say 'wow, its look like iphone'..n i said "no, its just better'

not to mention about quake 2...btw, anyone tried before???
