That is why I said "try to read up" his work
But yeah it is super dry i have to agree so just pick up "The Negative". I swear that the moment i started using even the basic the Zone System philosophy for exposure for my photography it nearly eliminated all my exposure errors. Best part is it also works for colour photography. |

QUOTE(yoong @ Sep 13 2011, 09:44 PM) The best way to assess your photos if by inspecting the negatives. Check the density, contrast and grain. Use a loupe and check it. Scanning is a transfer of data, so some data will be lost or altered, therefore it is not accurate. A loupe and a lightbox (a proper light balanced one if budget permits) they LOOK something like this (again u dont need to spend a bomb on them. The picture is just as example of what a loupe and lightbox look like). Two loupes on top of a lightbox![]() |

I also used to determine if my negatives are scratched or just part of the picture (sometimes this is not obvious to the naked eye). Then once I have selected the picture I want I ask for high res scan of that 1 frame... save me some money on having to low res scan the whole roll.![]() |

QUOTE(yoong @ Oct 10 2011, 11:49 PM) Hp5 is pretty tolerant, so 1600 is not a problem. I regularly shoot my trix at 3200 and once or twice managed to push it to 125,000 before! wow nice! though a little rich for my taste If you are looking to experiment of stand development, try the Rodinal. At high dilutions, like 1+100, it has a compensating effect that maintains the highlights. For me when I develop my trix at 1600 or 3200, I use dil B (HC110), partly because I'm too lazy to use a higher dilution and partly because if I want to push, it means I was high contrast. Here are some samples of tri-x @ 3200, dil B http://yoongkhean.wordpress.com/articles/s...ith-tri-x-3200/ Yes, you can rent mine. I have two enlargers in my darkroom, from 35mm, medium and large format. Here are my rates: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=186031088108845 Do pm me if interested. Wait... maybe one day when i have a very good shot and I itchy fingers i will come. I am interested in printing MF shots. Added on October 11, 2011, 11:38 amOK if anybody plans to do any bulk film buy please count me in! I will commit at least 5 rolls of Fujifilm Acros 120 format if it is anytime this month. QUOTE(Acquiesce @ Oct 11 2011, 01:44 PM) Hi guys, Jason Chew at J-One, Amcorp Mall.My dad gave me his old Canon Canonet G-III QL17, shutter mechanism looks and sounds fine (i must say better than my 5dm2!!!). It has not been operational since....dunno how many moon years. However i need to service it first, any idea where i could send and also if i could get the battery as well? Hopefully it could work ....cant wait to snap on film. Mobile : 0122892858 Desmond at YL Camera Service, Pudu Plaza. http://www.ylcamera.com.my/ Albert Cheah at Cheah Camera Repair Mobile: 0126679756 Near Digicolor in Complex Mutiara, Jalan Ipoh 568, 1st Floor, Lot 15 Complex Mutiara, 3 1/2 Miles, Jalan Ipoh I would recommend any of these three. Jason is my main shop i buy new camera stuffs from but he does repairs too. Desmond at YL Camera used to do them but I dont know he does sumore or not. Cheah Camera I sent my grandfather's 1953 Rolleiflex III to last year for cleaning and checking. I asked Cheah to do a shutter speed check last time... but i dont think he did it. Ah well it is a 1953 film camera anyway. With the latitude of a negative unless the timing is wayyyyy off i dont think i will notice much |

you guys suck! Make me want to get back into the darkroom only!
For those who have not tried B&W processing, I really really strongly suggest you try even if its just for fun. Negative processing is ok. Wait till you try printing your own pictures... I cannot even describe the amount of fun I had! When I was making 16x20" prints I actually ended up spending 6 hours in the darkroom. But it was damn right worth it |

QUOTE(ifer @ Oct 12 2011, 05:37 PM) for me was hunger. 6 hours in a dark room at 10 Celsius is not what i would call comfortable. It was mid winter in the UK without heater, so i was wearing my jacket and turned on the print driers just so that the room was warmer. Also had to boil water to get the solutions to the right temperature! |

QUOTE(ifer @ Oct 19 2011, 12:26 PM) so sorry hiroboroi as i actually lol when i was reading your story. though i find it funny here, i am sure it was terrifying for you at that moment. i am one of those photographers who use the large format though i do not use a dark cloth and stick my head into it nor i run across the road and get hit by a metrobus. I faced a same problem before although not in msia but in Paris France. This street artist who draws portraits of tourist in a tourist spot was scolding me in french (which i didnt understand) and i think he was ready to come and assault me already. i was pretty ready when he got up to at least punch him if he really came and hit me, luckily his friends stopped him from doing anything. I have to admit it was a shocking for me too, which is why these days i bring along pepper spray with me for these kind of situation. there was once when i was at an open space car park nearby pudu plaza. i noticed that i can see a nice view of the city from the car park. asked the boy who manage the space and he said ok not problem. so i took my camera out and start setting it up and stuffs. took me 15 to 20 minutes to set up my camera actually. approximately 20 minutes later, a dude who has a conan the barbarian size came up to me and asked why am i taking photographs. i told him that i am taking photographs as a hobby and i teach photography and i see this beautiful view of the city from here and stuffs. he started screaming like a WWE champion saying how i trespass the area as this space is a private owned space and i am not allowed to be here. he even told me that he will get his buddies (whom i assume have the same body size as his) to come together and beat the sh*t out of me. he even said that since i trespassed, he can decapitate me and hang my head in the tree and nobody will know anything about it and if they do, the law couldn't do anything because i trespass. prior his arrival, i managed to take a photo. so i thought since i have my photo, there is no point in arguing with him. i just said my sorry and how i didn't realise it's a private owned stuffs and smile and act dumb and stuffs (show bambi eyes). he kept on shouting and kept on saying he can smash my face onto the ground and everything. 5 minutes later, he asked me how long more do i need. i told him i need 5 more minutes. i guess i wanted to shoot another same shot as insurance before i leave. he left me alone. after i have shot my 2nd photo, i packed up and leave. before i leave the ground, he walked up to me and said sorry for being rude to me and i have to understand his situation as the land belongs to the government and how if the government see someone here he will lose his job and stuff. i said my last sorry and i left the place. i got my photos. and my head is still on my body. phew! i absolutely do not condone violence mind you, but i believe you should be prepared to respond with equal force if threatened, especially since i dont see any reason why people have to be that violent to us just for a photo... not to mention our expensive equipment... bu that is just me |

QUOTE(rx330 @ Oct 19 2011, 04:46 PM) oh yes... forgot to mention... after that incident i pretty much gave up taking people's picture already. at least those from the street. granted there was a story i read somewhere couple of months ago where a dude was violently confronted by a group of arabs just because he was taking a picture while they were in the general direction of where he was pointing it at, at a public place. QUOTE(LinTao @ Oct 24 2011, 09:52 PM) not the size of the film, the distance lol. like 50mm, is it same as 50mm on a 5D which is full frame? or is it like 50mm with a 1.6x crop factor on a 60D ( which is about 70+mm?) so sad that people these days do not know that digital crop factor is in reference to 35mm film size, not the other way round. |

let me put my two sen on the k1000, it was my first SLR i ever used which I borrowed from my dad some 12+ years ago. it is a fully mechanical camera that does not need any battery to operate (other then the light meter. BTW the question about the battery for k1000 is LR44 button batteries which are widely available everywhere in Msia).
Basically put this is a legendary camera - not because it could do everything, but more like everybody in the 1980s used it. it is generally a collector's item now. (just type k1000 pentax in google and count how many pages says collector item in the first few links). What I like about it is that it just bloody works! One feature i love the most of it is that it uses an moving-needle exposure meter, which gives me a MUCH better indication of how much I am over or under exposing. simply put if you do see a k1000 for sale just grab it. it is a workhorse camera, it is cheap and the sound it makes from clicking the shutter.... omg... no digital cam or automatic film camera will every come close to. |

QUOTE(askar_lcy @ Oct 25 2011, 05:10 PM) Added on October 25, 2011, 5:13 pm are u still using it? what dslr u using now? should've used pentax dslr since can share lens..haha yeap it's a legend slr. as i said, it's a good slr at it's time. Nikon D200 - mine Pentax K1000 - father's Rolleicord III Model K3B - grandfather's (from before 1953) I had one Nikon F80 film camera last time before the D200, that was a very good cam too but I have sold it off since. I never considered pentax film cams much since I was more interested in the long run in my investment, and decided that Nikon or Canon was a better choice. Been trying to shoot with the rolleicord recently since it is medium. I would really like a bronica 6x6 since i like huge prints (bigger then 8x12 prints) and 35mm has limitations in that area. the closest thing I can consider getting if it was a 35mm manual film cam would be the Nikon FM3a only because it has a moving-needle-index exposure indicator coupled with a Nikkor 50mm f1.2 AiS lens.... sweet! |

old pentax lenses are at par with their counter parts (ie nikon and canons for their time) why would you want to use some unknown samyang lens?

QUOTE(askar_lcy @ Oct 25 2011, 05:53 PM) if only u still kept your film slr...then ur family tree looks damn incredible.. planning to buy a mint FM3a when possible, though they cost a bomb. although I am very happy with my d200, save the sensor which loses to newer dslr now the controls and ergo is perfect, many times better then D300/simagine the title "3generations of shooting films" hahaha rmbr to post more pic of the rolleicord! sweet cam! |
