Hi,

Many years ago, I lost my Stoplock Original (Steering Lock) keys, so I now have only one key (no spares). blink.gif

So, where can I make duplicates of the Stoplock key in PJ/KL? The Stoplock key is a tubular key, and two of three keysmiths I went to didn't have the machine to make tubular keys. I managed to find one that has the machine, but I think the keysmith is quite inexperienced or unskilled. He made two spares but both cannot be used. He gave up after that, but he proceeded to scold me for giving him a "faulty" original key! mad.gif

No charge because I declined to pay for non-working duplicates. Anyway, one key is supposed to be RM20. I called one keysmith and he said they can duplicate Stoplock keys. I haven't been there yet so I can't comment more than that. I will post an update if it they can do it.

Success! There is a keysmith at KL who can duplicate Stoplock keys. However, it will take him nearly two hours to make a single key. It is a combination of using a key machine and manual fine-tuning. The key shop is:

Wellock Trading (opposite Dynasty Hotel)
203 Jln Ipoh, KL
9 am - 7 pm (Mon - Sat)
Tel: 03-40419164

To make things simple for him, give him your Stoplock Steering Lock so he can check if the duplicate key fits the lock. It will save you time (and his trouble) of returning to his shop and saying the duplicate key does not fit the lock. One duplicate only costs RM15, very cheap considering the effort taken to make a duplicate. I had mine done yesterday, and the duplicate the shop made didn't turn the lock as smoothly or as easily as the original key but the most important thing is, the duplicate key works! rclxm9.gif

Moral of the story: Do not lose your Stoplock keys. tongue.gif

As long it is man-made, any lock is never 100% secure (that is, impossible to duplicate). Stoplock steering lock can easily be defeated by sawing off the steering wheel (that is, no need to attack the lock). Stoplock Ultima (available from Enenus, 1Utama for RM699) is perhaps the best Stoplock model but even then, a professional security expert, Giles Verdon, took about 2 minutes to defeat it, albeit making lots of noise in the process. What steering locks offer is time. More time it takes to defeat it, the more undesirable the effort to steal your baby.

Do take heart that though Stoplock keys can be duplicated, not any Joe the keysmith can do it. Moreover, the effort and time to duplicate a Stoplock key is much harder and longer than your average steering lock key.

cbsteh.. may i give u a suggetion?? do read someone's explanation properly b4 makin a conclusion..

im not bad mouthing stoplock, in fact im doin the exact opposite.. wat i meant was, this shows that stoplock is a very secured lock.. although it is not a hundred percent thief proof (wat lock is??), but the it does give u more peace of mind knowing that even the keys r hard 2 duplicate, n more so, the duplicated keys still dont work as good..

understand cbsteh??

Sorry, your written explanation fails to express your actual intention.

one weakness of the steering lock is, no matter how secure the lock is, it can be easily overcome by sawing the steering itself, which is usually very very soft.

No hope, I think. Before I got mine duplicated, I contacted by email (Viv.Smith@saxon-brands.com) the original Stoplock manufacturer, Saxon, at England. They gave me a phone number to call. It belongs to Market Lock and Safe (http://www.market-lock.co.uk/) whom I believe can duplicate Stoplock keys. As to whether they can do it without the original (or a copy) key, the answer is probably no.

Yes, true. Some steering locks are better than others in how they lock the wheel. Some locks require two cuts (instead of a single cut) before the lock can be removed. Premium steering locks like Disklok (available online from UK for about RM500 including shipping + free casing for lock) cover the whole wheel so it is very difficult to cut the wheel because it is entirely covered by the steering lock. Note KK Lau Audio also sells Disklok but they have to order it as well (RM450 but without casing or choice of colour other than silver). On online, you can choose yellow, silver, or flashy titanium (like mirror!).

Stoplock Ultima (RM699) doesn't cover the entire wheel like Disklok but it covers it in such a way that requires two cuts on the wheel rim and a very difficult big cut on the wheel spoke (connecting the wheel hub to the wheel rim) to remove it. Because the Ultima covers the front, the big cut on the wheel spoke has to be done from behind -- very awkward because of limited space and the wheel spoke (depending on the car model) is often much fatter than the wheel rim.

Both Disklok and Stoplock Ultima can be defeated but they seem to be the best two steering locks in the market today. Both take about 2 minutes to defeat compared to several seconds for others (which include the much expensive and much hyped Autolok). Even steering locks with alarm were defeated by simply removing the batteries!

Hi Chris, are you still using Stoplock?
I’m looking for Stoplock Ultima for car, but I can’t find the shop that you mentioned.
