i have a Desire. I recommended to a friend to get the Galaxy S; on paper the latter has many advantages with better battery life and the super AMOLED , though crazily it lacks camera flash. In reality, after 2 months she's so fed up with it she wants to ebay it for and get an old iPhone 3GS - I know - it's the same processor running much slower, yet ironically the iPhone is so much more responsive - and I can understand her disappointment after paying so much.

Her Galaxy S is really laggy and unresponsive, even with all background apps killed, when typing an SMS the text lurches on screen, taking between 0.5 to 4 secs to appear (it's just like typing in a laggy terminal to the other side of the world!), apps take so long to start loading you initially think the screen hasn't picked up your finger tap, yet reading about it that's a common lag problem. When plugged in to a PC, hers gives no option to mount the drive to copy pictures or music across - the Desire works so much better. It's unbranded and unlocked so should be fairly stock.

The only solution seems to root it, install Froyo yourself and a lagfix, but I don't to risk bricking it and invalidating her warranty, and customer's shouldn't need to do this. Samsung promised the release for yesterday (end of September) but now it's been delayed to the end of October. I can't imagine her keeping it now.

The Galaxy S has a lot of potential on paper, and maybe it will be a massively better phone with Froyo and lagfix on it, but just doesn't seem to work nearly as well as the Desire or iPhone atm.
