JSM, do you still read this thread?

I have a question do you agree on Dreamer101 comment on do not disclose current/past salary?

Dreamer101 & JSM, do both of you ask the candidate for their past/current salary during interview?

Have you both ever face the candidate who are not telling the salary?
*
Hi,

I never ask someone's past and current salary. It is irrelevant to me as a hiring person. I know how much the company is willing to pay for that position and how much that job is worth to the company.

In fact, it will make my job as a hiring manager harder (please noted that I am not speaking from a HR stand point) if someone disclose his/her salary. This is because some companies has a implicit HR policy where you cannot make an offer more than 15% higher than previous salary. I cannot make a higher offer to an applicant even if I want to due to HR policy once the person disclose his/her salary. But, please noted that I am a fair hence unusual and abnormal human being. Most people do not behave like me.

QUOTE(reveur @ Sep 10 2005, 08:36 PM)
Hi there.
I have a question.
I was asked to interview 3 days ago. The Hr manager interviewed me and gave me some case study to do. I finished the case study but did not answer a few of the question because the question is totally wrong and i have no idea what it means. After all the Q&A, the HR manager told me that they are actually looking for a person to fill up a higher position of the job that i applied for. She then asked whether i am up to it. I took some time to think and answered her yes. Then she asked me to go back and do some sample answer for the question that she gave me. I sent her back the answer 2 days later (yesterday) and then called her to tell her i already sent her the answer.
During the interview. I was not nervous. I joked with her. She was happy all the time during the interview. She gave me her HP,Fax and office phone number and told me to tell her even though i will not send the answer back to her so that she won't wait for it.
After the interview i told her that i am not from this area so i need a frank answer whether that my expected salary at 1.4k is good. She said that she is not supposed to suggest me an amount for the expected salary but in her experience with 1.4k you cant survive here. Then she gave me back the Questinare and asked me to amend it. I wrote down 1.8k

Did I do anything wrong?

===================================================

On a different subject on the question, where do you see yourself 5 years from now. I answered the interviewe (another interview not the 3 day ago)
I see myself siting at your place. Is it arrogant? This answer. But i was called back for 2nd interview a day later and was interviewed by a person taht will be my direct superior. I waited an hour for the interview to start and the interview went for 30 min. I answered all their question and asked them back on the scope of my job and what i can do or cannot do when working there. Then it ended and i was asked to wait till this tuesday for the answer and see if i am shortlisted.
Wish me luck on both interview! I want the first job.
Btw. if i want to decline a certain job because i got a better offer on another job after they decided to hire me. How do i do that?

Thanks
*
Hi,

1) Given that HR tell you that 1.4K is not enough, you wrote back on 1.8K, I think that is okay..

<< I see myself siting at your place.>>

2) I really do not how to say this in a nice fashion. What do you have say something this nasty?? It is really bad manner to say you going to replace someone. You could have something like this:

I am hopeful that I could do as well as you and have a similiar position like you.

Don't this sound a lot of better and you are less likely to offend anyone??

to dreamer

i encounter alot of interview which talking about salary.

for example, they offer me 3k. i say 3.3k to them. so they told me, if after they

conduct interview and find out i really suitable then they call me.

my question is, does they usually give you a salary base on the current market

or lower ? because i every manage to get all the interview done but only the salary

problem. maybe i demand too much ?

thanks you
*
Hi,

1) Do you really will turn down a job offer just because of $300 per month difference?? Is it really a big deal to you???

2) If it is a good job, $300 more or less will not matter. If $300 matter that much to you, will you be sending a signal that you will leave if someone pay you $300 more??

3) How did you really say you $300 more matter a hell lot also??

IMHO, I will more likely to do and say this.

I really like your company and your job offer. I will accept the job offer at $3,000. But, if it is possible, I would like to be paid at $3,300 per month because of xyz and so on. In any case, I will accept the job offer whether it is $3,000 or $3,300.

In most cases, the way you say $3,300 is probably a hell less tactful that the way I presented.. Am I right???

Oh Yeah, Dreamer101, I got question here.
When looking for a job or people, why the interviewer need to know the family history? I mean need to fill up father/mother, sibling name, age, job....
Well, interviewer need to know the background of the candidate, how he/she growth up, what kind of environment the stay, relationship among family......, one interviewer hav told me they need to know how well he/she stay contact with the family, then they can know how good he/she can social with other.
My question is,
1). my relationship with dad are bad, never talk, is it I will not be consider? (which/what job no need communication, no need to talk?) huh.gif
2). does the job relate with my sibling? (some will said they need to know whether
I still need to take care their study or something).
3). But I think as I am an independent individual/object, not related with who when coming to applying job.

I am wonder... and what kind of point frm HR end?
*
Hi,

I have never come across something like this. What kind of company this is??

Thankz dreamer. Incidently enough. I have been called back this morning by the second interview and told that i have been given the job ( or something to the similar effect)But the 1st job (where i need to amend my salary) i still have yet to get reply from them.
I have a question. If i want to decline a job offer after they have called me. How do i do that? Furthermore. Is it wise to negotiate on the salary after they comfirmed with me the job position?

Thankz
*
Hi,
<< Is it wise to negotiate on the salary after they comfirmed with me the job position? >>

1) Absolutely not wise.

<<If i want to decline a job offer after they have called me.>>

2) Somehow, I do not consider a phone call as a valid job offer. But, if you are sure that you want to reject the job offer no matter what, telling people ASAP is probably the best way to go.

3) A candidate who has family that are fishermen and taxi-drivers will not provide the same rich environment for an IT professional that a family of people involved in IT will provide.  All other things being equal, the son of an Oracle DBA will be given preference to the son of a farmer.

I am absolutely dumb-founded, as i have always say that he is what he is now when asked by an interviewer. I think i should have made up some grand father story

The work culture is not mature if that's true.
*
Hi,

I have to respectfully disagree with jsm on this.

1 ) My family runs a small business. I have been depositing money into bank and dealing with small business stuff since 8 years old. That provides me better or equal exposure on the application side of IT than a son of DBA.

2) B was a son of vegetable farmer. Now, he is a MD of a large international bank. So, I do not see any permanent disadvantage of being bornt in a family of vegetable farmer.

@dreamer So you would not suggest that I ask how much salary after i meet up with them and enquire whether i can get more then that?
So a valid job offer is how?
*
Hi,

A valid job offer is something in writing. If you are offer a job, ask how much is the salary, what is the working hours, what is the benefit, what is the bonus and so on. Ask for an offer letter and say you will get back with a decision in X number of days.

If the salary is less than what you desire, see my earlier post and how to ask for more in a tactful fashion..

Hi,

This is what this thread about. There is no reason why the questions should only be from the interviewer.

- willing work shift ?
- willing transfer / relocated ?

interviewer: i seen you have a degree in BA and a diploma in Computer / IT.

why you take a degree in BA, why not in Computer / IT ?
help ~~~~~~ i also kena this question ~ 5/10 exactly words !

dreamer, what should i say ?  notworthy.gif
thanks you

Hi,

What is BA?? BA in what??

What kind of job are you applying??

Please write "I" instead of "i". It is highly irritating to me. You have a degree so please write in a way that shows you are educated...

BA for Business Adminstration

applying for system engineer / test engineer
*
Hi,

That is so easy to answer. You just have to say that since you learn about the computer side of the job with your diploma, you want to know/learn more about the business/application side of the job with your degree so that you can be a good system/test engineer.

Just spin it the way that it helps you to do the job that you are applying to.

At the end of interview, normally the interviewer will say "do u have any question?". Is there any important question should ask to the interviewer?
*
Hi,

Is this the first interview or second interview?? It makes a difference..

For the first interview, you should ask about the company product and service...

For the second interview, you should ask question about the company culture and work environment. The question will be like what do you consider as a good worker and peak performer character??

Eh? i thought for a worldly person such as yourself you'd know BA is for Business Adminstration.
B'sides, this is t3h internets. Grammer rules don't apply, and your writing in the Hi, form is irritation too, but no one has corrected you so far have they?

To Bugzbunny, you should ask any question that helps you understand your prospective job better, as well as how well you will fit in the organization. Doesn't really matter if it's the first or second interview that you asked this question, as most 2nd stage interviewers wouldn't know what you asked in your 1st interview anyways. And even if they did, it's better that you get some consistent answers. Interviewers, like interviewees, lie about themselves too.

But, please please please, don't ask for the sake of asking. If you have not questions, indicate that you understand everything. The interviewer probably hates answering mundane questions more than you hate asking them.
*
Hi Spanker,

1) In USA, BA stands for Bachelor of Arts. So, you have Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and BA in History and etc...

2) If I am the interviewer and you have no question, I will take it as you have no real interest in the job.

3) Frankly speaking, I do not think people can understand everything during the interview. If you ask no question, I will take it as either

A) you have no real interest in the job.

or B ) You are too timid to ask question.

4) You are what you do and write. I speak my mind and I have my opinion. It is up to you to decide what I posted make sense or not.

5) "Hi" - By the way, I was taught that it is bad manner to say something to someone without acknowledging the person first. It is very impolite to start a post withoiut a "Hi" or something along like "Dear Sir/Madam".

I noticed you have a habit of using US standards in your own understanding of malaysian language. Better drop that, it's REALLY annoying. Believe me I know, I learned the hard way.
*
Hi,

Why learn the Malaysian language?? It is not and will never be the global standard. In fact, it will most probably be Americanized by American TV and movies anyhow..

By the way, I like to annoy people and force people out of their comfort zone where no thinking is required.

What is Mizzou?? Since I do not know what is BA, I guess the statement of everyone knows what a BA is is not true.

Hi,

1) Just say that you believe you can and will do the job the best that you could..

2) "You need the job" is not something that normally I said...

3) The topic about salary and salary slip had been discussed throughly on this thread.

1) how abt what u had accomplished during ur time in this particular company? pls explain n give example

2) what was the hardest decision u make n whether the outcome is expected? pls explain n give example

3) u have short  tenure with diff companies, may i know why? n what make u think u would stay longer in my company

thks for guidance
*
Hi ts1,

1) Keep it relevant to the job that you are applying to. Try to mention tasks and projects that you had done that is relevant to the job that you are applying to.

2) This is some sort of trick question. Answer it like what I suggesten in (1). Keep it relevant...

3) Some possible answers. I do not know which answer is better for you.

A) I was exploring which field suits me better. After going through that many companies, I decided the area that your company is teh best long term answer for me.

B ) I outgrew those jobs and career ladder possible in those companies and I am looking for a company like yours that has a better career ladder and opoortuinies for me to work in for a long time.

1) to give example is easy but something that make the interviewers think hmm this guy is good...anything that routine will not b spectacular from their eyes

2) same as above

3) it does not provide you the neccessary career path in this organisation..will do..i guess
got one ocassion the interviewers threw a "dead" then i fed up n ask him if he were my position how he goin to tackle? he answer the same as i did if i answer n of course my follow up questions make him dunno how to answer haha...
*
Hi,

To give example is easy?? I do not think so. To give example that is relevant to the job applied requires the person to do reseach and find out the real requiirement of the job takes real work and preparation. How many people can give an impromptu 2 minutes speech about themselves?? And, do it well??

It takes time and practice. And, if you can do this very well, you can be a very good salesperson.

Hi,

Generally speaking, I do not listen for that long (30 minutes). And, if you talk for 30 minutes, I will most likely forget whatever you are talking about and confused what is the main point about you.

Usually, I will know whether I want to hire a person after talking for 5 minutes.

To Spanker and Dreamer,

I have a question here that has been raised before by some of the forumers but the reason i am asking this question again is that i couldn't really see there is any effective answer given. So long story short, if you were in my shoes and the question being asked by the interviewer is " Tell me where you stand in the next 5 years", what kind of answer will you give, let's say that you are majoring in the Business with I.T field because currently i am doing this course and you are a freshie. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

In 5 years, when you had gained enough experience, you could be working in the same company but with different position and job.

So i wanted to avoid this question, and told the interviewer that i wanted to skip the question so that i can come up with an answer and answer it later, what do you do if you still can't come out with a good reply or an answer by the time he question's you, wtf should you do?
*
Hi,

If you cannot answer the question on the spot, that either mean

A) You are clueless as what you want in life aka you have no goal

or B ) You have a real goal but you prefer not to say it. You need time to come up with a good lie.

C) You have very poor reflex and you did not come prepared for the interview.

So, implication (A), ( B ) , or © are all bad.. It is better to answer on the spot. Or, an answer like I prefer to do a good job now and do not think about the future and let the future take me where ever it might be. Or, an honest answer like I do not know is better than let me answer later.

Hi,

It is not a good idea to suggest you are going to replace anyone during interview..

QUOTE(ubhm @ Sep 25 2005, 05:42 PM)
I've never heard anyone who will tell the interviewer to skip the question so that he have time to think over an answer.

You can, all you have to do is just tell him/her nicely that you want to refer to the question later on.

The interviewer wants to see your immediate response and how you react to the question in real-time. If every question can be given ample time to think over, why not they just tell you what they gonna ask, and you answer them the next day...

Its ok to take a little pause, to think about the question that has been given.
*
Hi,

See above.. Skipping question is not a very good idea..

Hey...
I want to know what should I answer if I'm asked "How many interviews have you been before this?". I was asked this question a few days ago. Should I give an honest answer? Thats what I gave the interviewer. I told them that I've only went for one interview (acutally I've went for two but I don't think it makes much difference anyway). They also asked about the company and how the interview went. Or is there a better way to answer?

I have another question. Its not an interview question though but anyway...
A few days ago theres this company that gave me a call. Probably asking me to go for an interview because I did applied for a position there. We were in the middle of a conversation when all of a sudden the line went bad and we can't hear each other. At the end the line went off. I waited for the person to call back but he never did. What should I do? Should I call him back? Because I'm really interested in the job and I've been waiting a long time for their call. Now when they finally called, things went wrong. I'm not sure if the person would even remember me if I called back.
*
Hi,

The proper answer should be I have been to a few interviews. I believe I had done well in my interviews. As to which companies I went to interview with and the details of the interview, they are private and confidential. I will rather not to disclose those detail in this interview as I would not have disclose any detail of this interview to anyone else..
