EDIT: I seriously doubt anyone would be willing to trade it away unless you gave them rare hats. All we need now is key drops.

If you make keys tradable, it's only logical you also make it dropable.

I've yet to hear about anyone getting a key drop. I sincerely hope they'll implement it as a drop too. It'll make crates much more valuable & I've too many of them now.

I'm one of those who will not purchase a key so my opinion might be biased. Most of the people I met in game who kept buying keys to unlock crates are those who are hunting for hats.

Basically, if you have 3 refined metals & 1 crate, this is what you can get if you craft the metals for hat:
3 refined metals = 1 random hat + 1 crate.

If you trade away the 3 refined metals for a key, this is what you'll be left with:
Either 1 of 7 weapons, 5 hats, a name tag, 4 paints, a duel & 2 unusual items. Worst case scenario, 3 refined metals = 1 equalizer.

1 key for 3 refined is worth it... for an idiot.

This has got nothing to do with me until keys are droppable, since I don't buy them.
