12:00pm - 4:59pm ------> good afternoon
5pm - 8:59pm ---------> good evening
9pm - 11:59pm -------------> good night

'Good night' is only used when saying farewell, not when greeting. You do not greet your friend on the street with a 'Good night!'. You greet your friend with a 'Good Evening', this was the case when I was staying in England.
