Has anyone ever heard of an ocarina before?
its like a small flute and it looks like the picture below,
it's a simple instrument to play on-the-go
i would love to know if anyone is interested in this type of instrument
theres plenty of videos on youtube with people playing them, you can just search "ocarina"

Ocarina is a popular instrument in taiwan, there's a lot of ocarina shops in taiwan. In chinese they call it 陶笛 Tao Di. In malaysia it's not very popular, not many people know about this soulful sounding music instrument.

This taiwanese guy plays the ocarina very well. rclxms.gif

I had a 12 hole clay ocarina and it broke just in the midst of learning Merry Go Round Of Life from Howl's Moving Castle. :'( Anyone know where I can buy one in Malaysia? It can be of different designs, types , materials, etc. If not, I'll have to order another one online :/

Oh and to anyone out there, the ocarina is an awesome instrument and there are different types of them to suit your needs. So if you have time to spare, try one out!

get from Songbird Ocarina. I think they deliver worldwide. Or try TNG ocarinas, but not sure if they do international trading or not.

oh ocarina...
b4 i went to taiwan, i've never heard of it... hahaha...., so noe nothing about it,
then at taiwan, simply bought a few at 9fen, back in msia only start to do research,
then got a few more from china taobao.

so as a noob/beginner, i have tested a few ocarinas, expensive one and cheap ones.
it is important to choose an ocarina that is very playable and forgiving for the noob.
y? cos some ocarina, i have a soprano c performance grade, it is very tough to play for noob, a bit of air leaking from hole the note will lari, u need to be very precise with ur fingers, not recommended for beginners.

the brown submarine on top, Stein AC, is very forgiving, good for noobs.

bro, i'm not selling these la..
all bought online biggrin.gif

if u got fren from oversea ie taiwan china, u can ask them to get for u.
or u plan to go there soon.
other wise all have to buy from overseas.

Ocarina is expensive, good ones can cost a few hundred RM and more.
Once jatuh... habis.... laugh.gif

If u are new, u might wana consider plastic ones,
or buy cheaper clay ones for beginners.

Can check out Stein Ocarina, they have lotsa different styles, biggrin.gif

http://fengyaocarina.tmall.com/?spm=a220o....155993.1.C0rvfB

this model is less than RM 100 and easy to play, i have it as well.

Greeting! H2D,

Based on our experience, the reason you can't get the right pitch with the animal figurine shape Ocarina is simply there was no sound tuning being done on it.
Most of the cases are, such odd shape is simply use as souvenir rather rather than as a music instrument.
A good manufacturer will stamp a 'AC', 'SC', 'SF' and etc on an Ocarina to signature that it has being tuned to which/what key.
While playing with a guitar tuner is also a nice move to check your sound pitching of each note.
Hope this may help.

Cheers!

Wht u wana get?

Taobao, fastest.

but be careful, for a newbie, it is a bit tough to learn using a not that well made ocarina.

a good experienced player sure can show you he can play well on any ocarina,

but a first timer might find it frustrating ( if one has no experience playing woodwind instruments )

IMO,
ocarina that is suitable for beginner are those that require less air volume/air pressure to get in pitch.

if u blow normally, most of keys are flat, higher notes are even lower.

ppl who wana buy ocarina usually test the instrument at the shop. ( those serious players )

esp the clay handmade ones, each one can't be made the same.

focalink/stein ocarina frm taiwan.

I have a few and I play almost everyday. Yes, the shop in Ikano still sells. They have the purple clay single chamber AC. I think it's an AC, not too sure, didn't check. They have some TNG ceramic sopranos & altos too the last time I saw.

Revive this thread here to see if anyone still play ocarina. I collect ed various brand, handmade to machine and found Ray ocarina best in terms of money and quality.

Anyway for those who are interested to get one tao bao so far is the best bet. With shipping agent you can easily get one in less than 2 weeks. I can provide links for ocarina and shipping agent if anyone is interested
