With the release of firmware v3.50, Sony has announced that the PS3 will no longer support lossless audio during 3D Blu-ray playback.

Sony has confirmed when Dolby TrueHD is selected as the audio format, audio will be output in Dolby Digital during playback of Blu-ray 3D content. As for DTS-HD, audio will be output in regular DTS.

Other limitations that come with firmware 3.50 include mild support for BD-Java features, some menus and subtitles might be flattened, and some USB and 3rd party controllers have been disabled.

In response to the 3rd party devices no longer functioning, Sony made their stance clear.

“SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.”

“SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products.”

For those of you capable of 3D Blu-ray playback, let us know your thoughts. Is lossless audio worth losing for 3D Blu-ray playback?

Why does Sony have to disable lossless audio for 3D blu ray? Is it due to hardware limitation?

I think is due to the limited bandwidth of the HDMI1.3 hardware...
Sony sure would come out PS3 with the new HDMI1.4 to enable to HD Audio

I thinks it not a hardware limitation but firmware.
PS3 is powerful enough to support both 3D Bluray video and audio

First off, you cut 'n paste this from another website, didn't you?

Secondly, read the bold sentence. It states that Sony has previously supported lossless audio during 3D BD playback. That is an erroneous statement. With firmware 3.5, the PS3 can finally playback 3D BD; it could not have done that before firmware 3.5.

Lossless audio for 2D BD has been supported since launch (Dolby TrueHD) and with firmware 2.3 (DTS HDMA); lossless audio is still supported for 2D BD with firmware 3.5.

Correct.

With the current firmware, it is hardware limitation. With 2D BD, the Cell was used to decode video as well as lossless audio. But with 3D BD, the Cell is used to decode TWO video streams with no more cores to spare. Therefore, no lossless audio.

HOWEVER, future firmwares can bypass the need for the Cell to decode lossless audio. Instead the firmware could allow users with DTS HDMA and Dolby TrueHD to stream the undecoded signal to a compatible receiver while the Cell handle AVC-MVC.

It is not about the HDMI port of the PS3.

Judging on how old ps3 is, it's still a good deal imho, it was a free released firmware and i don't think they intended the 3D feature on its original ps3 design.

3D HDTV or projector. You can't use 3D-ready DLP projector or 3D PC monitor.

Not much incentive to upgrade. I'll stay with 3.41 firmware while waiting for newer custom firmware which enable back the Boot OtherOS option. They kill my linux on PS3.

Writesimply sounds like a genius who knows everything!

"It is not about the HDMI port of the PS3."

Then what is it? Why do new 3D tvs required HDMI 1.4? Its all about the HDMI port which v 1.3 doesn't have enough bandwidth to transfer 1080P at 120fps with lossless audio. That is why V1.4 came in.

120fps, really? shocking.gif

Maybe you should update the Wiki. The only differences between 1.3 and 1.4 there are
3D Over HDMI
Ethernet Channel
Audio Return Channel and
4k × 2k Resolution Support

bandwidth is the same at 10GBps
