Set up an internet connection and the PS3 will notify you on the update
Or you can download the update file, put it in a USB drive. Remember PS3 uses FAT32 only

I was there as well....

and guess what, my friend managed to sneak in, act as one of them and was playing MGS4 while all of us are stupidly waiting for it to launch LOL
