Simple guideline for Chin owner.
Chinchillas, originating from mountaineous regions of South America, are great pets - cute, social, yet inexpensive and relatively easy to take care of. However, most beginner chinchilla owners don't know much about the animals. In fact, chinchillas, like other small rodents, can be rather delicate and an illness contracted for instance by a cold draft or high temperature can be fatal for them within a very short period of time.

The most common mistakes made by inexperienced chinchilla owners include the following:

10) Wrong cage placement. Both too hot or too cold temperatures are bad for chinchillas. They can easily get heatstroke at temperatures of above 90F (30C), but can also freeze at temperatures below 50F (10C). Drafts are to be avoided as well, since they can cause pneumonia.

9) Mistakes when handling. The correct way to pick up and hold a chinchilla is by placing one hand below the body, with the thumb around a front leg, and supporting the weight with the second hand below the hindquarters. Never pull a chinchilla by the tail since it has a lot of delicate vertebrae which can break easily.

8) Not giving the chin a chance to take a regular dust bath. Dust baths are essential for chinchilla hygiene, and a fun spectacle to observe, too. Chinchillas should have the chance to take a dust bath at least once a week.

7) Using a wire mesh bottom cage. This is not a very good idea since chinchillas' small feet can slip through the mesh and get irritated by the metal, causing foot sores. A solid floor cage with a soft bedding like pelleted paper is much better.

6) Overfeeding treats. Many a newbie owner is all too happy feeding sweets and treats to a chinchilla, unaware that it is in fact harmful for the animal. Treats like a raisin should not be fed at all. Things containing chocolate and industrial sugar should not be fed as well.

5) Not making the house chinchilla-proof. There are numerous dangers in a typical household for a chin on the loose. The most obvious ones include anything that moves - be it people, doors, things that can fall down, or anything that can squeeze. Another one is cables - chinchillas chew everything in sight, and electric cables are not very healthy food! Green plants are another potential threat to chinchilla health - a lot of them (such as ficus or azalea) cause food poisoning if chewed on.

4) Not cleaning the cage regularly and often enough. Chinchillas are clean animals and feel miserable in a dirty cage. Bad hygiene is often one of the main reasons for infections and various serious diseases. A chinchilla cage should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a week (better twice), with the whole bedding renewed. Food bowls and the water tube should be cleaned daily.

3) Not providing enough space and exercise. A sight seen very often is a chinchilla hunched in the corner of a small cage, barely moving from that spot all day. Combined with unrestricted dry food access, this is a sure way to make a chinchilla overweight and significantly reduce its lifespan. For chinchillas, the same basic principle applies as for humans - leaner is better. A healthy chinchilla should feel firm to the touch below the fur, not soft and wobbly. Methods to ensure that your chin is in good shape and not overweight include enough space (at least 9 sq.ft for an adult chinchilla), toys to play with, an exercise wheel, and regular exploration forays outside of the cage.

2) Incorrect bedding. Wood shavings in particular, although very frequently used, are not a good bedding for chinchillas. They can cause foot sores and injuries to the chins' delicate eyes. Also, the wood dust which often accompanies shavings causes respiratory (lung) problems. Some kinds of wood, such as cedar or redwood, also contain oily components that can cause liver damage.

1) Improper food. This is probably the most frequent cause of illnesses among pet chinchillas. In particular, feeding a lot of moist vegetables such as lettuce can cause diarrhea, which can be lethal for a chinchilla within one or two days. Insufficient access to water (for instance, failure to notice that a gravity water bottle's ball was stuck and the chinchilla cannot drink enough) leads to dehydration and is also quite dangerous. Providing water in open bowls instead of a bottle can lead to contamination with droppings and bedding material and various infections as a result.

By avoiding these mistakes you are on a good way towards having a healthy and happy chinchilla with a long lifespan (perhaps over 20 years!).

Do you have other chin in the cage or any other animal like dog cat that can access to chin cage? Use flash and take a sharp picture post here, can't see it clear.

I have a dog but it does not have access to the cage/anywhere near it. Another chin is in another cage...
Here are some pictures using flash..
I suspect its a wound from the "house" that I brought him quite sometime ago..

This is the housing:
http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae323/Ruidon/IMG_3146.jpg

He used to bite the housing and overturn it (like the position in the picture)..
I just suspect but dont know true or not...

Any vet that is good with chins? =(

Hi chin, previously i bought the standard grey male from u, hes toto good and fattening but naughty now. Though of getting a male companion for toto, my gf just bought another chin from petstore at pyramid. It stated pied breed from netherland and its about 5 months old, its a mosaic violet type. But here is the problem, i tried to put them together in the same cage, toto was very curious and the roro seems clueless where he is and scare, toto trying to sniff around on roro body and kissing each other (not sure are they kissing or biting), where ever roro go toto always follow him and belakang mari (ride on roro back i suspect toto is horny, im not sure is true or not), until roro gets irritated with toto, hissing at him, chasing around the cage like fighting, gosh.. I have to seperate them in the end. Any advise chin? I just want them to play around together but not bitibg or fighting around.

That is not a Mosaic Violet, that is a mosaic. and is 8-9 months of at least. You can't put them in togehter, the mosaic is older then your toto, he will kill your toto if you force them into same cage, seperate in difference cage now.

yea the size of roro is bigger than toto, so i believe is older, and how u know its around 8-9 months? @_@ are they bought it from u? do u know anything about this chin background? i scare hes the anti-social negative type which not compatible with toto.

yea, i'm looking for another cage to seperate them now, actually... toto is the one that trying to kacau him while roro is trying to avoid him with self defence as seen on the video, i think roro is a very obedient type which explain why he's older. i'm trying the side by side technique, so hopefully they will get along well in the end.

I dont sale my chin to that shop, and i would not want to comment on the background as well.

I am a breeder, I dont think my guest of the chin age will be very far from the actual. I can only tell you more when you call me, i don't comment certain thing in the forum. smile.gif

You can order the stuff directly by PM.

I would like to share to all people who do not do a proper research, study, and attend to breed your chinchilla. The result is the chin will suffer as bad as what picture show below.

This chin owner, she, buy from the pet shop and never learn of care for chinchilla, and aim to breed them instantly. After failing of breeding them, eventually, she GIVE away this chins to her friend, and her friend have to do all the rescue work for her, taking care of a sick chin without any clues as well.

Esther Ong,

i wud advise against adopting if you cant afford them right now. As it is their maintenance cost as well in the long run.

just to give you an idea :

Eg Food : RM 40 - 60 per pack which can last about 1 month+
bath sand RM 20 per pack which can last for about 2 weeks or so,
hays RM 25 per pack
treats easily RM 10 - RM 20 per pack
wood shavings RM 8 per pack
play things, other stuff like medication & etc.

In a month you can easily use up RM 150 and above for them.

Added on March 4, 2011, 7:12 amPrincess90,

chin is selling in KL ranges from RM 800 - RM 2000 depending what kind of breeder you get from and where and colour of chin as well.

Added on March 4, 2011, 7:13 amatyra828347,

if no aircond, for me i put a fan for them coz i dont on my aircond 24/7 at home but my aircond is on from 3pm to 5am everyday.

If you can't afford to buy a chinchilla, you can't keep one. Having any pet need some to use money, if you financially not allow, wait till you can, then buy one.

Make sure your cage is big enough if you want to hanging some chew toy. I will not suggest wheel smaller then 15" and you need to keep your chin in air condition if you using wheel in his cage.

Haven't got a wheel for him yet , didn't find anything suitable - was looking for the saucer type I saw online which is supposed to be good for them but didn't come across anything yet. Also worried now if I get a wheel that he'll get too hot whilst running around a wheel/saucer whilst in his cage !

Using the AC most of the day, usually 1 hour on/off - so temperature stays between 22-27C by his cage area. Unfortunately my AC doesn't have very good timer controls so not sure what I'll do if away during the day or so, am sure will come up with something. He has a ball made of timothy hay hanging from the cage (well not anymore, he managed to get it down already) , and a hut made from the same which seems to keep him busy when he's awake in cage. Seems the shop didn't teach him how to use a water bottle attached to the cage which seems strange, but he's figured that out now and seems to be using it quite frequently which is good smile.gif

He's got a couple of small patches of less dense fur by his back which have been there since got him from the pet shop , I'm hoping these resolve themselves as I'm sure he's in a better environment than in a pet shop now smile.gif

I let him out so far 1-2 hours per day but supervised, and small gaps that he might want to squeeze into sealed off so he can't get in there and chew cables or something. Suprisingly not too difficult to catch, he's got no problem going on my hand or climbing around us when we sit on the floor.

Yes, just ensure that the chin is placed in the coolest area in your home, and leave the fan on and plenty of water, cool water preferably. Regular dust bath is a must as well.

Your chin eyes have infection, get it cure.

A healthy chinchilla's eye should be look like this. BRIGHT, NOT WATERY/WET LOOK OF FUR AROUND THE EYES And NO DISCHARGE.

Chinchillas, can give some advice? Or anyone else knowledgeable on Chinchillas. I posted a few pics of our chin on a previous page (http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1566291/+60#)

It looks like he has some fur biting , I'm guessing this might be from before whilst he was kept at the store - I haven't noticed it getting any worse (attached some new pictures, taken today). If it is indeed fur biting , what would be a way to resolve this? If he isn't biting, how long would it take for his fur to return to having a normal full coat?

Also, I noticed his skin red a bit around his nose - actually can only really see it properly on a picture - could this be fungus? I have the fungus powder (I think brand is Candid) which I can add to his dust bath, if this is the case.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

fur biting is a genatic problem, you can't reverse it. Your chin background have problem for sure.

Post picture of the nose. If it is fungus, get Silver Sparkle Chin dust Medicated.

Oh Ok - I thought it also happens when they're stressed or so, as we haven't noticed him fur biting since he's been here.

Anyway, here's a pic you can see his nose - is the candid fungus powder / scholl athletes foot powder not acceptable?

Thanks.

Saw the same Chin there today .. looks quite big actually.
Also the colour of the water looks like bit yellow and nearly empty ... chins don't drink much , so I'm guessing it hasn't changed for quite some time

Your chin eyes have infection, get it cure.

A healthy chinchilla's eye should be look like this. BRIGHT, NOT WATERY/WET LOOK OF FUR AROUND THE EYES And NO DISCHARGE.
Hi Chinchillas,

the eye is alot better now, you should have seen when it was having infection that was bad. That day it looks watery because its after i put in eyedrops for him. According to the doc, his eye healing now so continue with the eye drop.

Just wondering, where are you based?

If in Selangor / KL area can recommend a good vet for Chinchilla?

Useful to have the contact, just in case.

Thanks!

rjb123,

vets generally is not knowledgeable with chinchilla. I heard you can try Dr Hasnu, at Kota Damansara.

my vet also is doing research when i bring my chin to her and she get back to me what needs to be done a day or two later on treatment.

1. should i layer the mesh wires i.e the ladder and second and third storey with anything to prevent foot sore?
Yes, you can lay something like tile or flat board.

2. when do i start feeding him alfalfa again and whats the ratio?
this coming friday can. Ratio is 50 alf 50 tim.

3. my chin is in my room and my tv everything is in my room.. do i have to lower my volume to a minimal level?
Yes, chin need a quite place, dark, cooling, they are rodent.

4. when do i start having contact with him?
About 1-2 weeks. Minimum 1 week.

Added on March 30, 2011, 2:18 pmoh also.. my rocky is being super active right now hopping up and down is it because hes scared or something?
Is normal, he is healthy, and happy.

Added on March 30, 2011, 2:35 pmongoing questions :

5. my chin keeps sleeping in his potty area and not in his totoro house how do i get him used to sleeping in the house?
Let him sleep where ever he want, follow the chin desire, not us. He will sleep on the house when he feel like it.

6. he sometimes nibbles at the jumping wooden block. is it harmful for his diet?
It is save, that wooden block is desire to be chew by small animal.

7. do i need to vaccinate my chin?
No need. Just dont put him outside to run around in garden, chin is a indoor pet, NO OUTSIDE.

8. how do i use the cooling pad?
Put inside the cage, he will go sleep on it when he need.

9. anymore standard grey chin for sale? really thinking of getting him a buddy in 2 weeks time or so
LYN's rule, no sale discussion on thread, PM me or phone me.

You can read the first page's link for more information about care of chinchilla.

No, you can't leave your chin 3 days without a person to take care of them.

Basically chinchillas don't bite, however if they get threaten they bite. The case you see can be many reason, enviroment, diet, etc., that cause the chin to be aggressive especiallu high stress enviroment.

Until today everything was a fine, eat well sleep well, jump well, active as usual

I bought him at aeon JJ bukit tinggi, there only one pet shop beside Harvey norman.

I have a question before googling, some people prefer to said giving wet towel after dust bath because the pee over the body.

Second other people may think this is dead way to let chinchilla giving wet shower(warm water)except the head nose and ear.

What the best way to keep chinchilla clean? Currently everyday he is under fans 24/7 with water bowl beside, 3 times a week dust bath and everyday serving wet towel clean over the body.

fan wont do a thing to chinchilla, it only help for air circulation. Chinchilla won't sweat like us, fan is useless to them. Get a cooling pad if you not have your chin in air con room.

wet shower, wet towel, all is wrong method to clean up chin. Don't follow it. Pee over the body, give dust bath often, if not send to mountofchinchilla.com for clean up the pee fur all over body.

Your chin poo is too small, feed timothy hay more, cut down the pellet. Chin's pee colour is abit of brown/ orange colour, but your chin pee have calcium over load. Too much calcium for him. Try change other chin pellet.

Obvious your chin is in a warm very enviroment, get him a cooling pad and ceremic house. make sure he is active at night and drinking.

Just thought I'd update on my chin as haven't posted in a long time. He's grown up a bit and now weighs a touch over 500g , compared to around the 350g range like before.

Also his hair at the back has got a lot better, no patches anymore like beforehand which is good smile.gif

Now the only downside is - before he was noisy at night , but got used to it (staying in studio condo!) . Recently, he's got a lot lot noisier and naughtier than before.

I have a metal food bowl for him, which is hooked onto the cage - it is quite sturdy. But, every night he managed to flip the bowl from the holder onto the floor, take the holder itself - carry it to the first floor and maybe playing with it, banging it against the side of the cage - very noisy!! And of course wasted food, as it all ends up on the floor mad.gif

Last night, he somehow managed to dislodge the stairs that go to the first floor , no idea how. Just woke up this morning and saw the stair on the floor ... quite impressive.

I'm decide to do 2nd or 3rd level for him, since he's quite boring on ground floor, any idea to add on to make another level in the cages?

staircases, wooden block, etc. Avoid Plastic

Below two photo is not my cages, just a refer from google_image,

Hi Guys, got some questions here..

1) what is the correct amount of hay to be given to the chinchilla ? and how oftne do i need to provide it? its written MR.HAY, also got write Alfafa Hay
2)if i buy the 3 tier cage which is for cat to put my chinchilla is it ok ? does the base of the cage needs to be covers so that it is solid and not have lining spaces?

This is my current pallet for my chin...good enough or should change to a better 1 ?

Hi Guys, got some questions here..

1) what is the correct amount of hay to be given to the chinchilla ? and how oftne do i need to provide it? its written MR.HAY, also got write Alfafa Hay
2)if i buy the 3 tier cage which is for cat to put my chinchilla is it ok ? does the base of the cage needs to be covers so that it is solid and not have lining spaces?

This is my current pallet for my chin...good enough or should change to a better 1 ?

Sometime my Chin also sleep side-way like a dog,

i place fans, cooling pad, water bowl.

I still see him keep whole body side way nearby cages.

Wonder it's too hot or what, ICE might help?

when the chin sleeps sideways, means it's very comfortable. Nothing to worry about. Just let it enjoy its slumber smile.gif

you need more time to bond with your chin before it trust u enough to stand on your shoulder. Our palms are warm and it's not tue most favourite hang out place for the chins. Spend more time with your chin to develop the bond. With time, they will enjoy massages on your palm.
As for play time, don't let it roam too freely yet. Limit the space for its free run to train it to come back to you when you call. Have some treats ready. Chin's teeth are ever growing and need to be filed. Feed it hay or calcium blocks or apple chew sticks. check out chubby pets garden or tiny critters for chin's stuff.

do remember to give your chin regular dust bath to cool down. smile.gif hope these helps.

There's no good bargain for a chin. Do save up an get one who is bred properly. Cheap chins will mean there is an unethical breeder behind this who is in it for fast money. Don't entertain that kind of heartache. smile.gif

The price for chinchillas are not regulated in Malaysia. But u can research around the web for an approximate value of a chinchilla. Some breeders i know vary their chins through quality, colour, If you can find a chin that cost around 400-600, i would say it is a darn good bargain if you can be sure of the health condition of your chin. Normal price that i know ranges around RM800 - RM1.6k. RM2k is a bit over reaching. in any event you can always ask for justification for that price. One breeder i can vouch quality for is mount of chinchillas. you can google for it. He's malaysian.

Yes, possibly when u brought chin back since she is sick.

Last min do u bring her to vet?

I have a question, normally standard dark grey size bigger then other color?

Compare to violet chin size is smaller?

Hei i have just bought a chinchilla from lowyat.net and i am totally a newbie. i did my research before i come in to ask questions but i still need some guidance and help and hopefully i can give the best to my chinchilla

First of all, can i use Chipsi Classic 1kg for my chinchilla ?

Another thing is i put my chinchilla at my 2nd living hall(2nd floor) just outside my room which don't have a fan and air-con is only switches On when my families are watching tv. My chinchilla doesn't has access to any air-con or fan during our sleeping time so will it be a major problem for him ? i believe my 2nd living hall is not that hot but i don't have a temp measurement tool so i don't know what's the temp when we switch off the air-con. Btw, should i get a cooling pad for him ?

Thanks alot.

Hi all,

I am gonna be getting a chinchilla soon and going to be getting a plastic bottom so I have to have a safe bedding for the chinchilla.

as I don't think a wire floor would be unsuitable for chinchilla's small feet, i found the plastic base one with wire mesh on the top would be suitable for me to furnish it as well.

http://reinbiotech.com/pets/product-catego...min/back2nature

^^^ I have found this product above on the web and it seems to be sold widely around my area, need recommendations if it is safe for the chins or should i use the aspen wood shavings??

"Chinchillas" : I found that on ur website, your cage has a wooden flooring? did you cut the wooden planks yourself? owh and where can i purchase the wooden planks that are safe for my chins?

thanks to all for your time and kind replies =)

The cage is come with the wooden floor, not made from me. You can use the back to nature, but you need to use a toilet to enable to use that, direct contact by chin for this bedding cannot be use.

what do you use for chinchilla beddings then?? heard even using aspen wood shavings would injure them, and the cat pallets will make their feet hurt..... so i am at a lost on which bedding i should use.
i was planning to get a bottom enclosed cage instead of a wired one as so the chinchillas wont get foot sores or getting their foot stuck in it

thank you

Chipsi use many type of timber wood, so far not much problem found in small animal yet.

Yes, I'm aware of that, I'm currently using Alex cooling pad from Chubby Pets Garden and some ceramic tiles to cover the wired platform. Ceramic tiles wont get hot and it doubles up as cooling pad too !

I cut open this Razer Mantis mouse pad tube in the other end and my chin is loving it crawling in and out of the tube.

Dont worry too much if without air cond, my chinc is doing fine without a/c too. Just make sure you put your chin in an opened area with good ventilation, like living room and not in a stuffy store room. Also, I have 2 cooling pads, one is Marukan Japan and the other is Alex aluminium plate.

Only once I saw her ears become orange, which is a sign of overheating. I hold her in front of an opened fridge to cool her down.

I will suggest you use other recycle material as choose toy or hiding place. A large toilet roll is ok. smile.gif

Hi im new here, just reserve a chin from mountain of chinchilla, will get it after cny..do you know where i can get cage with tier that is cheap & not wired? Can i know what shud i have to keep a chin? BTW, im putting my chin in office with a/c but nite time there will nobody there..will it ok? if needed a/c i can switch on but lower the fan & higher temperature..i got a zoozone cage last time for my gp..can i use for chin..do the ceramic house really a cooling place for them..haha..so many question tim~
*
Dont use cheap cage, cheap cage will not hold you chin and the paint on the bar is not save for chin to chew as well. For the enviroment, make sure is ventilated at night. Ceramic house will help a bit for chin.

My chin is starting to knaw at wire insulations, very dangerous !!

Please give me some ideas on how to protect my wires without spending a bomb or too much time ?

I read that some use clear vinyl pvc tubing and wrap over the exposed wires. Any better ideas ?

You can't. Best way is give more apple chew stick and hay. PVC tube is not a save toy for chinchilla.

Don't save this kind of money, later your chin will have issue on teeth and digestive problem. Get him some chew stone, straw house etc. , plenty out there.

My chin is now 430g, estimated 9months old.
Is this weight ok ? She is very picky on food though.

Chins doesn't like to be hold, but if you do it oftenly they will get used to it and wont be so nervous trying to jump off your hand. But they will not let you hold for long period of time though.

My chin only lets me tickle around her neck when she is sleepy, otherwise she will push my finger again. Or am I doing it wrong ?

I want to buy a new chin soon but I would like to ask all 'sifu' here...how do you keep your chin cool besides using the ceramic housing and cooling pad?

1) Do you keep him/her in air-con room? If 'yes', then the electricity bill must be hefty?
2) Can you keep a fan (without air-con) blowing all day and night at the chin?
3) Will the chin catch a 'cold' if I just keep a fan on for 24/7?
4) Any other methods to keep the chin cool?

Thank you.

Hey bros and sis, new chin owner here~ . was wondering what bedding you all use for your chins, thinking of getting the chipsi classic one but it says its made from spruce and fir which is not supposed to be good for them , generally should be avoided. any tips for new owner here? sad.gif

Chipsi is safe but I'm only using them in the "toilet" as absorbent, not as bedding.

help!!!!

Yesterday I adopted 2 chins - 1 grey and 1 biege - from someone who badly wanted them no more. He said they're above 2 years old. They seemed active and agile but so skinny they were - 425g each - that both could escape through my 3 tiers cat cage, luckily they only escaped to jump onto my lap. I then emptied one of my ferret's cage and shifted the chins there - empty means no ferrets inside but all the ferret's accessories are still there.

Today, I bought them 1/2kg timothy hay, 5lb Oxbow Essentials Chinchilla Deluxe pellets, 12" sanko wheel, LivingWorld Fresh'nComfy Bedding, LivingWorld bathhouse and 1.5kg of SankoWild bathing sand from Pet Safari Ikano. This evening, both chins took some 1/2 hour investigating the bath house before taking their dustbath. However neither of them are using the wheel.

My questions;
1. Do I need to apply for a license to keep them? If yes, then please elaborate the procedure.
2. What is the ideal weight for a 2 years chin? I heard somewhere that different colour chins have different ideal weight, is it true?
3. How do I tell a male from a female? Both chins are of equal size and weight and their genitals looks the same though, and the guy I had them from also haven't got a clue of their gender but he once "had a baby" from these two - that's as far as I was told.
4. Is a ferret's cage setup suitable for chins? Do they do well on hanging hammock or tunnel?
5. Did I buy the right kinds of food? And how much food does a chin need a day? Do I serve the food several times a day/night or do I just leave your suggested ammount in the cage everyday?
6. Does a chin really use a wheel? These two are not interested with the wheel at all - much like my ferrets.
7. When again can I give them a dustbath - that they've already had their bath this evening.

I really am in need of answers right now and I would appreciate any informative answers from you guys. Thank you in advance.

I really hope for everyone in chinchilla tread to be reasonable and constructive.

For anybody trying to say " If you don't know all this, why would you had them the first place!" , be known that my answer is "Does saying that solve any problems? How would such sentence give me any help, now that I've had them anyway! " - Just making myself clear hahaha.

And my ferrets, many a times today have they collectively tried to earn themselves a new kind of meal, but it's not that serious as chins can hop and ferrets only crawl and climb.

Thanks again everyone.

Today i finally sexed my two chins hahaha... all this while, i thought both of them are males, as i was looking for the wrong place n the wrong organ... i was looking for a vertical slitbelow the vents' fold like would my rabbits. Thanks to the many websites i researched, i finally got to know that a chin's slit is horizontal n located exactly at the fold...
even that its been almost 2 weeks now both chins never used their wheel, so i moved the wheel into my sg's cage n they seem to love it.
i first bought them a totoro house but it cannot fit 2 chins, so i bought another one n place them side by side,
can anybody here teach me how to post a picture please... i'd love to share their pic with everyone, u see here, i'm a chin nubie n would love to here any useful comment from u guys...

Hi all,

If anyone of you is looking to adopt a chin - please get in touch via PM. Had the little guy (male) for around a year now - he's unfortunately had a few issues with what seems like fungus/ringworm which is improving but not fully cured yet.

Now he's staying in AC room set to 25C 24/h per day, so you should be able to offer him the same! . Cage/dustbath/chew toys will all be included. All this cost me easily RM1000+

Staying in Subang, SS16 btw

My questions;

Hi, although I'm planning to give away our chin - I'll give you some advice as I've done A LOT of research on them in the last year or so :

1. As far as I know, no license is required to keep a Chinchilla
2. Can't comment on ideal weight, sorry
3. Their "organs" are quite large, if you have a male, trust me - you'll know tongue.gif
4. Any metal cage is suitable really - as long as there's some chew toys present and no plastic around inside. Mine likes to sleep inside his wooden hut, I haven't used a hammock etc. in fear of them overheating
5. From research done, Oxbow food is always highly regarded as a high quality food and recommended.
6. I believe it's not a good idea to get them a wheel, as they may get too much excersize and end up overheating , especially in Malaysia's hot climate! Also make sure the wheel doesn't contain any plastic for them to chew / eat
7. The more the merrier ! Twice a week should be sufficient, but it won't do any harm if you give them a dust bath on a more frequent basis

Take a picture, upload on LYN with "Add this attachment" or use an imagehost such as imgur.com and paste the forum link in to your reply.

Thanks rjb123, so someone has answered my questions at last...
I'll do away with the hammocks n wheel, but what happen now is that my chins has managed to escape from their cage again, they look big enough to not escape, but after a few days they easily slip through the metal bars of the cage...
So they are now in a standard 3 feet rabbit cage... i'll try to upload their pic once i find the "Add this attachment" button...
About ur chin, hope u find him a good home

Hi everyone, am new to the CHIN world. A friend of mine introduce me to this and I was automatically hooked. Just a few questions

1. The pet store(in Penang) i visited that is selling chin is 8 - 9 mths old. Selling for RM900. Is it advisable to get a CHIN that age? I read some places that it is more advisable to buy a CHIN 10 weeks and above.
2. Will the chin be very lonely if I only purchase one? It is living with 2 other friends =)

Nice. smile.gif but you using the wrong type of cage. Look for flat base bottom cage, not wire bottom cage. And the cage you use is too small as well, need bigger la. smile.gif

Does anyone know any petshop in the Klang Valley selling (solid base) exercise wheel with the size of 10-12inches (25-30cm)?

Thanks in advance!

Dearest Chinchilla Lovers,

I was told that I am not allowed to post links regarding reviews of recommended products for Chinchillas. And I noticed that my post has been deleted.

So instead of posting a link to my review, I am going to post my review here as advised.

If you do a quick search about Chinchilla diet, you will notice that some rabbit pellets are suitable for Chinchillas. In fact, in Malaysia, a particular local brand is actually a repack of the commercial rabbit pellets imported from USA.

Inspired by that fact, we have been testing out Genesis Ultra Premium Rabbit Food on Chinchillas for the past few months. Whiskey (picture above) is one of the Chinchillas we have been feeding Genesis. The truth is, he LOVES it! His fur condition has improved as well giving yet another strong testimony how great Genesis is as THE rabbit food and now can be given to Chinchillas as well!

Why feed rabbit food when there are chinchilla foods formulated specifically for chinchillas? Well, we’re going for ULTRA PREMIUM that’s why!

Genesis Ultra Premium comes in both the Timothy Hay based and Alfalfa Hay based. Feel free to search it out in the market for your beloved Chinchillas.
I hope I do not offend anyone on this thread because I am just sharing what is good so that everyone will come to know it.

If you are wondering how does the GENESIS ULTRA PREMIUM food looks like, here are pictures of the packagings:
