Common Kelvin White Balance Settings :
2500K - very strong orange tungsten light
2800K - strong orange tungsten light
3200K - yellowish tungsten light
4500K M6 - flourescent light (most flourescent tubes are green even though our eyes don't see it)
5500K - flash
6500K - daylight (or daylight-balanced flourescent light)
9900K - strong blue stage lighting or evening light

Xenon lighting is rare but that should be between 7000-9000K.

Whenever you enter a new situation that has different WB, just set your Kelvin WB again and test with one shot. You

should be able to do this with practice.

With the Sony A300 and A350, you can use Live View and see the effect of changing Kelvin WB... live!

M = Magenta
G = Green
2500K = Blue
9900K = Amber

Take a picture. Supposing the picture is very Green, you need to add the opposite which is Magenta. If the picture is

too Blue you need to go closer to Amber. So if the picture is very blue-green-ish, you will need to go closer to 9900K

M9.

To prevent the built-in flash from appearing in pictures when in wireless flash mode, you can use any of these

methods, or a combination of them:

- use a darker aperture (e.g. F11)
- use a lower ISO (e.g. ISO100)
- use a shutter speed faster than your flash sync speed so that High Speed Sync is activated (e.g. 1/320th of a

second)
- use a piece of exposed, developed negative film in front of your pop-up flash

asking those pro...normally how u all use ur flash?..my F42 seemed quite hard to control...last nite in room, try my prime with danbo...and flash..

1st attempt, i use all auto setting on flash, iso 400, F1.8..i adjust the shutter till get the light meter to about 0.2..then the flash seemed like to low power...coz not bright enuf..

2nd attempt, i use flash at 1/32 point upward to ceiling...but too bright, i use iso200 and 1/160 F1.8...lol...

3nd attempt, Flash at 1/32, speed 1/200, iso 200 F1.8..tak cukup bright pulak...

Ahpingko, with 1/200s the 1/32 power won't be enuff.. Even u're using f1.4 pun coz u have to see the distance..

I think beter use higher power for the flash.. How high ur ceiling? Bouncing needs lots of power coz it diffuses some of the light..

at 1/200 with 1/32 power, i direct flash to the danbo...not enough bright...if i use 1/160 with 1/32 power...bounce anywhere also too bright..

ahpingko: Sounds like your shutter speed was slow in the 1st attempt and so there was more ambient light than flash light. So the effect of the flash is little.

When using shutter speeds faster than 1/160s on the A550, the flash goes into High Speed Sync mode. This will take up a lot of power. If you try 1/4000s the power will be even less.

You can change your A550's EV and it will effect the flash. I suggest trying 1/160s F1.8 ISO200 EV -2, and bouncing.

tried b4...at that setting still overexpose...too bright..lol..got diffuser on as well...if go up 1/200, become not enough bright..lol..

btw, for daytime shooting, at iso200 1/160 F2.2, best setting for flash is leave it auto ?..

ahpingko: So you can try 1/200s ISO1600 F1.8. You can leave it in Auto for daylight as it needs to pick a fast-enough shutter speed to avoid overexposing the background.

Woah that is such a huge lens considering it is just 35mm . Sony 35mm f1.8 one only same size like 50mm size. but is this samyang a ff lens? But how is d optic performance of samyang lens, is it really worth it since it is manual focusing. I never have the cobfident to do manual focusing seems too difficult ;(

With that size, it MUST be a FF lens. Who would want to lug around an APS-C 35mm lens of that size! And manual focus too. The IQ had better be exceptional or it will be dead in the water on release.

I am eagerly awaiting the 85mm f2.8 SAM lens to come to M'sia...

Hey guys, my F42am flash is acting up ~_~ Sometimes the flash will be out of sync with my shutter, like when i take a picture the flash will always be slower than my shutter de (probably by a few mili secs) so I don't usually get my subjects well lit. I checked my camera and my flash settings is on normal flash and not rear sync. It can be corrected after i detach the flash and reattach it again to my a350. Soooooo, has anybody experienced this problem???

Try cleaning the metal contacts on your body's hotshoe. It may have oxidized and not giving a good contact with your flash.

Is your flash loose when mounted on your body? If it is then this could be causing your problem. Try sticking a piece of tape on the hotshoe to address this issue.

Probably not. I do not think any camera shop will accept trade-in. Best you can do is sell the NEX for as high a price as you can and top up a bit for the A33. Electronic gadgets depreciate even before the ink on your credit card transaction slip dries up after you sign it. It's a sad fact of life.

ahpingko: The MSPD was probably pirated. My WX-1 and NEX-5 both say the same thing on an MSPD that works perfectly on my A700 and A900 (because Sony didn't make a big issue about it then I guess.)

You know lah if properly exposed, an ISO1600 shot can be very clean also.

clivengu: Not that hard honestly. The Samyang 35mm F1.4 UMC is a FF lens. Same goes for the 14mm F2.8 and 85mm F1.4, while the 8mm F3.5 diagonal fisheye is APS-C only.

And to think, I used to think the Minolta 35mm F1.4G was a heavy lens, and it was front-heavy (it's fairly long for a prime.)

If it's great wide open, it will be worth it for HSM alone.

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 was not in stock yet so I didn't get to try it, even on another mount.

The A580 will be coming to Malaysia in October 2010. Just in time to be tried against the A55. The A33 and SEL18200 are already in Sony Style outlets.

Deerc: Handheld Twilight is a lot cleaner than if you set ISO manually. If you insist on using a lower ISO then use 7 FPS drive mode instead.

A small update about the Sony A700 successor called “A77″:

1) The A77 can be a little bit more bulky, heavier and can produce more photo’s from the NEW battery (around 1.000 pictures). The battery is also compatible with the Pro DSLR which Sony will launch months after the A77.

2) The camera can do 720p60 and 720p30. We are not certain yet if it can do 1080p24 (but probably yes)

3) It will take CF+SD+MS cards, of wich you can use two at the same time (CF+MS or SD +MS or only SD)

I repeat, we will see a prototype verison at Photokina. The real camera will be announced early 2011!

I wanted to warranty the battery but the shop keeper ask me try with direct bounce first (bounce with ceiling )

he said the bounce card will cause the TTL to misread and use more power ..

tak tau betul or not..

i do understand that by bouncing, i suffer light loss , thus use more power, but will it be that significant ?

from few hundreds shots to about 50 ?

d4rkholeang3l: Put your F42 and 360 bounce card on the floor, pointing up. Trigger it wirelessly.

Observe how much light goes in front, and how much goes behind the flash. Take a picture of it and show us.

The Gary Fong Lightsphere is a major light sucker (since it bounces half of the light to the back!)

And no, TTL will not be misled by bounce cards. TTL will always send one pre-flash, and detect how bright that pre-flash is through the lens (hence the TTL name) and then adjust power accordingly.
