Dear Activision and Treyarch
We love your games, we really do. The Call of Duty series has been one of the most successful and gripping in our history.
Here's the thing, plain and simple. Your next game, known as COD7 or Call of Duty: Black Ops has got an issue which flys against the ideals gamers are looking for. We are not happy with the monopolization of servers to GameServers.com for three reasons.
Alone, they will not be able to handle the needs required by an FPS launch. In a 'small' country such as Australia, about four hundred servers are needed to cope. There is only one Datacentre in the entire continent that will allow for <100ms gaming. There are many other examples of this occuring.
Locking in the server files means that many social and competitive meetups will be made harder when the server for a local game is has to be hosted elsewhere. You are pushing people to modify the game against your wishes, not deterring it.
In a free society, there should be choice. With similar games such as Battlefield: Bad Company 2, while there was no public release of server files, a multitude of server providers (both those renting to the public, or providing to the public - ISPs etc.) were available. This is the best way in our free market society to manage the server load.
Please, for the sake of your customers, take these concerns into consideration before releasing Black Ops to ensure it can reach the potential that we both seek.
Sincerely,
The International First-Person Shooter Community
